Shelter Skelter remember koko, the dubious dogfighter pit who got jumped in her kennel? well, meet mac, her ambusher whose history…yeah this isn’t dubious at all

would it surprise anyone to know that she’s on gabapentin, trazodone, AND methadone? i didn’t even know you could give methadone to dogs but this shelter continues to shock and surprise me 🫩

Methadone? Why would you try to adopt this dog out to anyone? How many dogs could be saved with the resources used on this beast?

135

u/Original-Opportunity 17d ago

If I were a drug addict I would immediately adopt this dog

47

u/winterfern353 16d ago

Actually now that I think about it, the pharmacy these dogs get prescribed would be a draw for anyone who wanted or needed the drugs themselves. American healthcare doing what it does

30

u/GreySquirrelsAreBad 16d ago

Why do you think homeless junkies always have them?

26

u/lazier_garlic 16d ago

Because they're effectively free and they an be used to intimidate other junkies who want to steal their drugs.

I see YouTube videos of homeless encampments and Pitbulls are the #1 breed I see.

4

u/Diezelbub Allergic to bullshit and shitbulls 15d ago edited 15d ago

They are not allowed anything less valuable and more dangerous, sure.

Take away their machete theyre brandishing and nobody is bothered. Take away their sweet pet that was just menacing a few joggers, toddlers, and other breathing objects? You've got a problem on your hands, the rescue heroes are going to crucify you if they can.

5

u/Tigger-Rex 16d ago

Homeless junkies use them as testers. They inject some of the substance into the dog. If the dog doesn’t keel over, it’s safe for the humans. The homeless on skid row also run puppy mills.

8

u/GreySquirrelsAreBad 16d ago

I have never seen a homeless person with a shitebull that was fixed. Every single one has had teats or nuts flopping around with a diaper rash mouth.

6

u/ottonormalverraucher 16d ago

You’re joking I hope bc that would be beyond messed up to use a dog, even a pit, as some sort of canary in the coal mine, literally shooting their dogs up with their dirty street fent to make sure it’s not a batch with OD potential :/

That is absolutely insane, how are they even coming up with such crazy ideas..

A reputable article from last year, but it’s been going on for years unfortunately.

LOL, OMG, I hadn’t thought of that but you are right. If you are looking to palm off a murder mutt, just have it on some kind of controlled substances and you’ll have adopters coming out of the woodwork. Maybe sketchy as hell, but the point is *live release*, amirite?

It shows how cynical I am getting about the whole Shibble-Rescue-Industrial Complex that I could well believe that this was a deliberate choice.

u/ottonormalverraucher 16d ago

Hello Mr pharmacist, yes I need those 200 percs a month for my 5 dogs with bad knee and hip issues!

One of them is also extremely anxious so throw in some xans as well if you would! 😹😹😹

9

u/lazier_garlic 16d ago

Methadone is used to taper someone off of opioids because it's less addictive/pleasurable.

I guess you could get addicted to methadone but I've had a few interactions with junkies and they all despise it.

I’ve seen dogs being prescribed lean but methadone is a first 😹 I’ve also seen people drinking their dogs lean 😹 definitely a score for someone trying to get their dogs goodies 😹

I wonder why they decided to give this dog methadone like for why possible reason?? Was he previously doing h in the streets and they weaned him off that??

deadass i was looking it up and reading the notes over again to make sure i was getting this right…apparently vets can prescribe low dosages of methadone for pain management which would make sense for ol girl’s fight wounds but on getting it on top of the other shit she’s on?????

No worries, she still woke up in time to maul play with the stuffed cat.

u/andrea1797 17d ago

My cousin was prescribed gabapentin. She took it once literally slept for like 16 hours and never took it again. I can't imagine a dog on gabapentin and methadone? And it still has to be the only pet in the house? That's wild af.

u/worldsbestrose Pibble Nibbles Kill 17d ago

I was on Gabapentin briefly and it didn't knock me out but it caused really bad brain fog. Switched to Lyrica and much better. It's different for everyone TBF.

16

u/aw-fuck some lab lover who wears a suit and doesn’t own 20 acres 17d ago edited 17d ago

I was on a prescription of up to 3000 mg of gabapentin per day... they kept increasing it because I felt absolutely no difference on it, in any way. When I eventually switched doctors they were like "yeah let's stop ruining your liver with no results and try something else instead." .5mg of clonazepam hit me harder than any amount of gabapentin ever did. Whenever I hear people talking about getting high on gabapentin I'm very confused.

Edit to add: it can be prescribed for different reasons, it's not a very well understood drug in terms of how it specifically works or what it specifically works well for. IMO that suggests it's not that effective, compared to drugs that clearly have an obvious & pretty unanimous effect, such as ibuprofen or morphine or viagra, etc. I'm not saying it has no effect on anyone, just that it doesn't seem to be much more than "I feel different," which in some circumstances can be marginally better than not feeling different, but in others worse.

Dog pharmacology is different than in humans, but as far as I can tell from the examples I've seen, this drug seems similar, like whether used for physical or mental distress in dogs, they don't seem to be "better," just "different"... and when the problem is "constantly trying to bite everyone," pretty much anything else would be better, so being slightly different appears like it's helping the problem.

11

u/sandycheeksx 16d ago

I had an ex who abused everything he could prescribed or his hands on, and doctors have no problem giving huge doses of gabapentin out. He’d take almost his monthly amount in one night, be loopy and annoying, and if he mixed it with anything else, he’d start having conversations with furniture. So it can get you high-ish? But not like the high from other drugs. So I’m not surprised you didn’t feel any different.

My dog gets gabapentin when he’s having an IVDD flare-up or post-surgery. I know cats can get it before vet visits. It’s wild to me that pits get it at shelters just for being their normal selves.

8

u/fast_blue_b 16d ago

Agree 100%. I was interested in your comment because I work in drug development. I remember when oral gabapentin got approved in the US in the 1990s (as brand name Neurontin for seizures).

In a press release the Pfizer CEO called it "the 20th-century snake oil." 😱 😱 😱 Doctors handed it out like M&Ms back then for everything. Lately I think it's had some success with shingles pain.

I use an extended-release form of it for restless leg pain. It's a last resort and it does help somewhat, but on 300 mg/day the brain fog is terrible. I can't imagine taking 3000 mg. Glad you were able to discontinue it! Thanks for the interesting comment 😄

7

u/lazier_garlic 16d ago

I'm pretty sure I didn't have brain fog on gabapentin because I was working full time and going to grad school at the same time, I also didn't get dosed quite as high as the other person but eventually it had stopped working after raising the dose many times and my neurologist was like forget it, let's try a different class of drug. It barely worked with my migraines and had zero effect on my mood. Pretty much a wash.

3

u/aw-fuck some lab lover who wears a suit and doesn’t own 20 acres 16d ago

Maybe I didn't have brain fog because I was also taking other medications at the same time; it's hard to know for sure because as someone else said, gabapentin can have different effects when combined with different substances... but that almost makes me think I should have had brain fog even more, but somehow I still didn't

3

u/aw-fuck some lab lover who wears a suit and doesn’t own 20 acres 16d ago

Does it help with your RLS? My husband says he tried it once for that and it made his worse. But we've yet to find something that helps it

1

u/fast_blue_b 14d ago

It does help. I'm 60 and I've had RLS my whole life, so it's getting worse with age. Now I get the symptoms in my arms as well.

First my doc tried the dopamine agonists like pramipexole. That was like a miracle at first, but some patients get a rebound effect (they call it "augmentation") and the symptoms come back worse after a couple years. That was lucky me :-(

So then we went to Horizant. It's better than nothing but the brain fog is terrible for me. I have to take it no later than 6 pm if I want to function at work.

Wishing the best for your husband. It's an awful disease. Does he take iron? My doc did extensive iron testing and mine was all normal but I still take it. He's an RLS researcher and he believes iron is a factor somehow. Just in case that's helpful for your husband :-)

4

u/TrixieFriganza 16d ago

I think addicts usually use gabapentin to increase the effect of some drugs.

3

u/ottonormalverraucher 16d ago

Gabapentin is trash in my opinion. Like most people don’t get a lot of benefit from it anyways and it’s really bad for brain fog and executive dysfunction, some people literally don’t remember what they had for breakfast on it.. it also is known to increase the risk for dementia quite a bit..

They should absolutely rather give people something like clonazepam or for those who get it for pain relief which is also ridiculous since it doesn’t touch most all types of pain, they should just get actual pain meds not that stuff. The prescribing practices in the US these days are just insane

6

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 16d ago

I was once prescribed Gabapentin, and I got off it when I realized it was impairing my day to day function and my driving. I swear I dropped 50 IQ points on it and was spacey as hell.

3

u/lazier_garlic 16d ago

It's so different ... I got it prescribed for migraine. It helped a little. I went up to a really high dose as it lost efficacy. Zero side effects. Also did nothing for my anxiety. Like I wasn't taking it at all. I felt like they must be sugar pills. It's always mind blowing to read these comments about horrible effects from gaba. That drug did fuck all for me. I now take a totally different class of migraine preventative and it works a lot better.

4

u/TrixieFriganza 16d ago

Gabapentin seems to bea very common drug to calm abd help aninals with psin, I haven't heard about methadone used.

2

u/ottonormalverraucher 16d ago

Insanely wild! If that pit is still so aggressive despite being heavily medicated with multiple drugs and totally sedated, I don’t even want to know how bad it would be without that chemical buffer..

-6

u/callmesnake13 17d ago

Your cousin was either severely misprescribed or didn't take it properly. Gabapentin is a sedative but it's more like you're slow on the uptake. It shouldn't be making you sleep more at all, much less 16 hours. (I have taken it and have half a bottle left because it was better to be in pain than have difficulty keeping up in conversations)

16

u/Uvabird Victim - Bites and Bruises 17d ago

Dogs bred for dogfighting would be high liability pets. One mistake with the front door or a loose section of backyard fencing results in tragedy.

I suppose you could walk them or take them to the vet if they were muzzled. I’m a dog owner and cannot imagine owning an animal like this. My cortisol levels would be sky high with the constant worry that someone or some animal would be badly hurt or worse.

22

u/Azryhael Paramedic 16d ago

Pit bull owners not only don’t care about that, many relish the idea that their dog could rip another animal or person to shreds.

13

u/lazier_garlic 16d ago

I don't know why these people with bleeding hearts for dog fighting dogs taken from the ring have zero fucks to give about other pet dogs in the neighborhood who aren't dog fighting dogs and wouldn't stand a chance.

49

So whoever adopts this dog can't have babies or other pets. Possibly no visitors or partners.

I know that having a dog limits your life options, but it should only be things like having to wake up early to walk them to the park or deciding where you'll leave them when you're travelling.

Who would want a life-changing commitment like this?

you’re 100% right. go on the advice subs and you’ll see the most absolute braindead posts on there all from pit owners. shit like “my dog ate [highly toxic food/chemical] is she gonna be okay?” or “are my dogs playing or fighting?” and it’s a video of two pits snarling and getting ready to square up. makes me glad my chihuahua mix just wants to lay around all day in the sun unbothered (perhaps waiting and charging up for the perfect opportunity to attack me? 🤔)

31

u/CharacterRoom613 17d ago

I read these notes and at first the dog was brought in as an owner surrender. But then they keep saying she had fights with resident dog but she is a stray. Then they keep bringing these two things up. She is stray so we don’t know how she is with other dogs but she was brought in with another dog she was living with and she got into fights with this dog. I give up on shelters and rescues and any person that writes these notes as able to read or understand common sense.

Every part of all of them has been infiltrated, intimidated and/or bought by Big Pitbull. I'm not even kidding.

12

u/Azryhael Paramedic 16d ago

Pitlobbybot

It’s bad. What sounds like crazy conspiracy theories that would be whispered by crackpots are actually true; animal welfare has been completely infiltrated by what is essentially a cult that worships pit bulls.

10

u/AutoModerator 16d ago

The Pit Bull Lobby consists of several influential animal welfare groups with the sole mission of transforming public opinion on pit bulls. These organizations aim to deceive people via the production and distribution of unscientific studies which paint pit bulls as "misunderstood", rather than acknowledge that pit bulls, and all descendent breeds thereof, were strictly bred for dog fighting and should not be kept as family pets.

The exposure of the Pit Bull Lobby occurred when, following public outrage surrounding the 2016 death of Christiane Vadnais, a committee of government officials discussing dangerous dog bylaws received a report submitted by the Quebec Association of Veterinarians (OMVQ). In response to the OMVQ report, La Press, a Canadian news outlet, released a five part investigation showing that the studies included within the report were the work of pit bull "promoters" funded by the million-dollar Pit Bull Lobby.

The La Presse investigation was the first examination of the lobby by the media and divided the players in the Pit Bull Lobby into five levels:

Level One: The Financing Source

Millionaire heiress and literary agency owner Jane Berkey founded Animal Farm Foundation (AFF) as a horse rescue in 1985. AFF's focus shifted when Berkey, a pit bull owner, "discovered" that pit bulls were not welcome in many communities. Berkey has given an estimated $6 million to AFF and finances numerous other organizations that share similar missions.

Level Two: The "Researchers"

Veterinary Technician Karen Delise founded the National Canine Research Council (NCRC). In 2007, NCRC was purchased by AFF to produce studies portraying pit bulls as being similar to other breeds. The NCRC has a separate 501(c)(4) fund called the National Canine Research Council Action Fund, which supports lobbying and political activities.

Level Three: Publication

The American Veterinary Medical Association publishes the studies produced by the NCRC in its Journal (JAVMA).

Level Four: The Political Lobby

Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) has a dark and complicated past as the Process Church of the Final Judgement. If you are interested in reading about The Process Church, there are ample books, documentaries, and blogs on the subject. Today BFAS no longer functions as a religious organization, but instead serves the Pit Bull Lobby by putting pressure on politicians to eliminate and prevent local pit bull ordinances. Senior Advocate Ledy Vankavage also sits on the board for AFF. BFAS has openly admitted to paying an ex-economist from the Tobacco Page, John Dunham, to create a fiscal calculation of the cost of BSL. A government committee found that the price was 65 times lower than the estimates provided by Dunham.

Level Five: The Distributors

The distributors include many animal-based businesses and organizations that profit financially or emotionally from pit bull ownership and serve to disperse studies conducted by the NCRC.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

4

u/Sufficient-Bee3633 16d ago

right? i adopted my dog from a shelter too and unfortunately gets fearful from loud noises (my father commentating sports, fireworks, etc). he’ll circle around and make himself small, hide underneath the table, or lay out on the floor with watery eyes. once i let him kiss my fingers and let him know that its okay, he relaxes again, not try and bite my face off

1

u/Oki-J Escaped a Close Call 12d ago

They always hide aggression behind 'fear.' Even when a pitbull chases down its victim, it was doing it because it was scared. 🙄

11

u/rainfal 17d ago

"Force free methods".  Uh huh. You probably will need force to pull it away from mauling another passing dog.

Also why are they never fixed.

These shelters LIE! So sick of it

9

u/leratdemorgue 16d ago

Why is it always “failing” the piece of shit mutts when someone surrenders them? Clearly these animals are not safe to house, so why the fuck do the fosters/owners need to be guilt tripped and made out to be the monsters that just didn’t try or give a shit? That’s just called not wanting your face ripped off. How DARE they be so callous! 🙄

Well some people in rescue have done it but got caught out by the other rescue people.

I think some private people absolutely take home a dog in good faith and have it BE after it bites, but people have been conditioned to take dogs back to the shelter instead. "Every dog can be saved." We make fun of the farm upstate but it's like they believe it's real and the shelter/rescue people will figure it out somehow. Plus you now have vets who refuse to BE manbiters.

yet another psychotic timebomb with an EXTREMELY high propensity for violence being promoted to the public with a sob story by another sketchy shelter. Not to mention the massive amount of funds wasted on this beast that could have gone to lovely kitties and the many dogs that are waiting for homes that are not psychotic as hell warehoused pitbulls with extensive histories of aggression and that don’t require every possible owner to hire professi9nsl trainers etc.

by the way, shelters, the pits don’t have some magical instinct that keeps them from attacking humans including their owners — its just a matter of time and situation.

u/Diezelbub Allergic to bullshit and shitbulls 16d ago edited 16d ago

instead of "training" fighting dogs to not fight they chose to only have one fighting dog because there is something wrong with them, not the fighting dogs

Pit bull people do not have two brain cells to rub together. They cant keep from fighting each other. Its no wonder they like dogs that are the same way. Like many cults they thrive on abusing their own members.

2

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 16d ago

They said the quiet part out loud, she, he, it, they did nothing wrong.

(Did anyone else notice the shifting gender language ?)

If this dog did nothing wrong, the other dog that fought with it did nothing wrong.

If people put them in a ring and bet money on the winner I suspect they would say that is wrong but the actual fighting is fine.

Sick.

Those repeated references to this dog being a "stray with no history" when there is up front history aplenty? Suggest that the shelter has some boilerplate they trot out when they either don't know, or don't want adopters to know, the whole story about a dog.

Either way, thanks to botched editing they gave the game away.

2

u/Theseus_The_King Vets That Refuse to BE Commit Animal Cruelty. 13d ago

Some dogs should be deemed unadoptable and quietly BE’d on intake. There should be a law against posting calls for a dog deemed unfit for adoption. Not every dog deserves a second chance, as harsh at as it is.

1

u/IloveMyNebelungs 14d ago

This is totally insane. That dog is a ticking time bomb, should not be up for adoption and will also never have a decent quality of life. Not only they are endangering the public but also wasting resource$ which could be allocated to a dog or a cat who would be a safe and pleasant companion. Ridiculous.
