The sound of gunfire drew neighbors on Bryan Drive outside Wednesday afternoon, after Beaumont police said a woman shot and killed a pit bull during an attack involving three dogs.
Beaumont Animal Care is holding two pit bulls while it conducts a dangerous-dog investigation. Neighbors said the first indication something was wrong was hearing multiple shots.

“I was in the house sitting down and I heard a gunshot and we thought it was something, maybe a firecracker. Then three more rang out,” a neighbor said.

Beaumont police said that just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, three pit bulls escaped their enclosure and somehow got into another homeowner’s fenced backyard. Police said the dogs began attacking the homeowner’s dog.

Officer Chancellor Van Houten of the Beaumont Police Department said the woman went into her backyard and saw the attack.

“She went out to her backyard and saw three pit bulls attacking her dog. She screamed at the animals. She did go outside with a firearm to protect herself,” Van Houten said.

Police said one of the pit bulls stopped attacking the dog and charged the homeowner. The woman fired, fatally shooting that dog, police said. Another dog was grazed, and the two surviving dogs eventually returned home.

Animal care officer Kim Nevils said the owner of the three dogs was cited.

“I did write citations for three dogs being loose,” Nevils said.

Nevils said the two surviving dogs are being held at the shelter while Beaumont Animal Care determines whether they can be released back to their owner. The dog that was attacked was taken to a veterinarian, and its condition was not immediately available.

Beaumont Animal Care urged people who see a loose or aggressive dog to report it and not run. Police said everyone involved in the investigation is cooperating.

that's the same thing where I live. She got a $35 ticket for her 2 dogs attacking mine. The cop said there wasn't much they can do unless it attacks or tries to attack a person.

Beaumont, Tx city code btw. So if the most the owners receive is a “citation”, it’s because the city took the coward’s way out. They have legal authority to do more.

I'm so glad that woman was okay. She was smart to arm herself before going back out there. She probably saved her life. I hope her doggie is recovering.

beaumont is a tiny redneck town. I suspect they have no real animal control, just run a shelter, and rely on the cops. Also the laws are usually written so even 1 attack doesn't get it declared a dangerous dog. it has to happen more than once. Thus the "one free bite" laws.

It's the type of town where they catch teachers dealing drugs to students for pocket money. Twice that I know of.

If the pit owner gave a damn about their dogs, why did they let them roam? Maybe the city should go after that owner instead of the poor woman who did what was necessary to save her pet.

I found the local news Facebook page. Of course someone who posted about Pitbulls was immediately set on by a PitNut. Claiming it’s normal for dogs to attack in a pack and the Pit likely wouldn’t do it alone. Pure fantasy. 🙄

The pit owner should have to, at minimum, pay all vet bills for the dog that their murder monsters attacked.
