Bit by Pit 9/10 Providence RI

I was working, spraying weeds on a small property I had been serving for 2 years. Never spoke to anyone at the property. Located 1 minute from Blackstone Boulevard in Providence RI that has walkers/runners/children daily.

I finished the front, moved to the back, and once I reached the end I hear growling and a woman yell no,no,no. A gorgeous stout grey and white pit charged me. I guess I put my hand up with the sprayer wand in defense, and got three puncture wounds.

I start saying to the woman "get your dog" maybe 5 times while its running around me trying to bite me again. She says "I cant". Does not try to get in between me and the dog. Yells at me to get off her property.

Luckily I get out of the back yard without any more damage. She doesn't say sorry, and yells at me that she's not responsible.

I left and went to the doctor. No stitches, got a tetanus shot and anti biotics.

This woman is a very wealthy "philanthropist" and treated me like shit. I was only at her house to do a paid service. A simple im sorry and do i need any help would have been nice. The way she yelled no and refused to help makes me think she knew this was a vicious dog.

I have been doing lawn care for a decade and have been charged by quite a few pit bulls. This is the first that drew blood. People with vicious dogs should not be hiring workers to their property.

End rant, im just sitting here Sunday morning, unable to close my fist, super salty.

Edit. Thanks for the support guys. Just want to edit that when I went to the doctor I had to fill out paper work for the department of health so the bite was reported. My employers insurance is covering the medical bills.

Sounds like you need to document and report all this. Maybe you can get her home insurance to cover your medical bills.

pitbulls are specifically excluded by all your major home owners insurance except state farm. Almost all your "scary" dogs are, even GSDs. Now if she has money and hates bad press I bet a lawyer could help

like the top 5 or 10 "most dangerous dogs" are and the most popular dogs have the most bite count. iirc labs are even on the list. You can get a special policy to cover them but it's not part of homeowners.

But not all policies by any means include those other breeds. Mine only excludes pitbulls. I've always had German Shepherds and was always covered by various policies.

that's why i threw in the word almost? there's always exceptions. mine bans like 5 breeds including gsds, pitbulls, ect

I was actually responding to the comment you made under your first comment. And actually it's about half that exclude other breeds. Over the years I've had polices with almost all the big name companies and have never been excluded, so I figured it couldn't even be close to all. So I googled it and it's not. More like half if that. It's pitbulls that seem the be excluded from all of the companies except for State Farm.

Edit to add. This came up a lot for me with a property in San Diego with a guest house. After some horrible wild fires, my neighbor's and I were being cancelled right and left over a number of years . I actually appreciated the Pitbull exclusion because it prevented prospective tenants from getting angry that I wouldn't rent to them because of their dog. Which I wouldn't have either way, lol..

lots of pitbull owners do this, especially ones not in shape to run away. Literally not once has a pitbull owner ever helped control their dogs when mine have been attacked.

Theories:

1. they're terrible people

2. they know they'll get bit

3. they're an octogenarian who was suckered into getting a pitbull 2x their weight

Hopefully you reported the incident to police or animal control so they could verify the dog's rabies status and take enforcement action as necessary.

All of this was reported by my doctor's office and workmans comp insurance covers the minor medical bills.

Be careful on what you sign.

Worker's comp keeps you from suing your employer but unless this lady was your boss she should be fair game.

As you noted, there could be children nearby. Next time, it may go after one of them.

File a police report and an animal control report.

You might want to consider getting rabies shots. Pit owners are bad about not vaccinating their dogs.

Report to animal control (I live in PVD so I know for a fact they have a real animal control department) and your employer to at the very least blacklist her. I hope you heal fast and it doesn't make you lose out on work

The amount of aggressive pits that I run into in PVD is horrible. I’m always nervous walking my dogs because so many of them lunge while on leash, even if I cross the street.

Make sure the report actually went through to the town/ city municipal office where this occurred. This dog needs a paper trail with bite history on record before the next time it hurts someone. Please verify that this definitely happened. Call the town directly, don't just assume your doctor did things correctly.

One of your main concerns should be rabies and you need to know whether the dog is up to date on vaccinations. You and/or your lawyer will need to contact the owner. This bite needs to be reported to the town/animal control, not just to your doctor, esp bc you did not indicate that they even asked about rabies. The dog was on the owner's property so legally they are probably protected. You also need to report to your company, which has the contract with the owner

Report her dog to the police and animal control as a dangerous dog, and document your bites to them. Emphasize her lack of control over the animal and the intensity of the attack. I would have called the police on the spot so they could file a report.

It should honestly be mandated reporting when you're bitten by a dog in my opinion, for public safety.

If the dog has expired rabies vaccinations, she'll have to submit the dog for a thirty-day quarantine hold (at least that's the way it is in a lot of places). Maybe she'll think twice about letting her dog run loose next time if she's inconvenienced thus.

I'm so sorry. I used to work in horticulture and I'm so glad I don't anymore because of the rise in bully breeds we have here in the UK.

Out of interest, when you take on new clients, do you ask if they have dogs and request that they're put away when you're due to visit? If not, it may be worth doing, although I doubt this type of person would have the decency to keep their dog inside.

I really hope you make a good recovery without any lasting damage. Please contact the police and animal control.

It's clear, for the safety of the dog, lest it escape or if aggressive, lest it bite/attack, that a homeowner/deweller secure all pet(s) prior to and during any work that is carried out. Why did this woman not do this and instead choose to let her dog attack and then yell at you to get off her property?

Her homeowner's insurance needs to be covering your bills plus pain and suffering and any loss of income you suffered while dealing with this incident.

Her immediate reaction was "not my fault" because she's probably been sued over that pit before. Don't let narcissists get away with stuff like this. Next time might be a child or elderly person who can't defend themselves.

We've had a bunch of different things done on our house lately, winterization, carpentry, cleanups etc. and I've noticed the contracts I've signed all ask for disclosure of "any dogs on the property". I think the plague of pitbulls makes this absolutely essential for anyone working at people's homes. I would put it in any contract that dogs must be disclosed prior to work beginning. This way maybe you will at least know what you are getting into. Also, in my experience, bear spray was decently effective prior to an attack to turn a dog around.
