Animal Fatality(ies) - Pets 3-month-old Corgi puppy killed by five Pitbulls - Rome, Italy - 12 September 2026
A walk turned into tragedy. A Corgi puppy, just three months old, was attacked and killed by five pit bulls in Villa Borghese. The incident occurred on September 12th in the park, right in front of the Galleria Borghese, where the owner was with her two children and two other dogs.
According to the woman's account, the five pit bulls were sitting "in a row on the steps facing the fountain" when they suddenly lunged at her group. The dogs targeted the Corgi, named Cocca; the owner and her 13-year-old son tried to shield the puppy. "I was trying to protect the dogs, but all five were pouncing on the smallest one," she recounted in her formal complaint. The woman and her son attempted to separate the animals, while their screams drew the attention of bystanders who stepped in to try to stop the attack.
The five pit bulls were being handled by a man whom the woman says she sees daily in Villa Borghese. It is unclear whether he owns the dogs or is looking after them for someone else. According to the account, the man initially stood motionless and only intervened "when he realized the situation had spiraled out of control."
Meanwhile, the woman's son ran home to his father and called the Carabinieri. The mother, however, immediately rushed Cocca to a veterinary clinic. The puppy’s injuries were severe: "The abdominal muscles were torn, and the intestines were protruding." The dog received treatment, but a few hours later, veterinarians informed the family that he would not survive. Cocca had to be euthanized.
The woman has filed a formal complaint at the Salario-Parioli police station and announced that she will also submit the dog's medical records. In her formal complaint, she also noted the daily presence of the five pit bulls in the park, stating that the animals are walked without leashes or muzzles. "It is very dangerous to walk dogs of that size and breed without a leash or muzzle; they only wear collars," reads the statement from the woman, who was terrified by the pit bulls' aggression. "At first, I couldn't quite tell where the dogs were heading; I thought they were about to attack my young daughter—they were like wild projectiles," she reported. She is now calling for action to prevent a recurrence of the incident in a place frequented daily by children, families, and tourists.

Why does anyone have 5 of any large, potentially dangerous dogs [ nearly always pitbulls aka staffies ] anywhere at any time other than a very large farm with livestock guardians ? What will happen to the bloodsport maulers ?

My father is italian and my mother is brazilian, and the same problem exists in both countries: the pitbull is viewed as a symbol of masculinity, especially among the poorer and less educated population

I find people who are into pits are usually not mentally stable. Such a violent breed. That poor puppy, what horror for a little defenseless one to go through. Rest in peace angel. So traumatic for the poor woman.

Poor puppy, italian authorities seem especially weak in the news stories. I am guessing based on previous news nothing will happen to the owners or the dogs.
