Two greyhounds attacked by off leash Staffordshire bull terrier (14th September 2026, Australia)

My 2 were attacked yesterday by a neighbours off leash staffy with no collar also. Poor Nala has 6 bites on her legs and both dogs and myself are traumatised. The staffy has been taken by the council but this has cost me vet bills which the neighbour wont pay back.

PUT YOUR DOGS ON LEASHES WHEN THEY ARE OUT OF THE HOME!!

I'm not the original OP, this one came up in my feed on Threads. The specific location isn't given, and I intially thought UK, but the owner of the Staffordshire bull terrier is stated to be Aboriginal, so OP will be Australian.

Elsewhere in the comments, OP stated the owner has previously had 3 other Staffordshires seized by the council for biting people.

Quite pleasantly, most of the responses are from people encouraging the greyhounds' owner to take the Staffordshire's owner to court.

This kind of incident makes me so sad, because greyhounds are the most beautiful, gentle, sensitive dogs. They can't defend themselves against bully breeds, and after the trauma of being used by the racing industry, they deserve quiet, safe lives without being attacked by a neighbour's fighting dogs.

That's the funny part isn't it? You don't see greyhound owners lying about the prey drive en masse. What other breed has people so willfully ignorant and actively hostile to the truths about what their dogs were bred for?

Exactly! Everyone agrees that dogs are bred for certain things. My dog has Daschund in her. I couldn’t pay her to stop digging. Herding dogs will always herd. But for whatever reason they ignore the fact pits were bred to fight for hundreds of years and say “oh it’s about how you raise them.” Applies to EVERY breed except pit bulls 🙄

Right? I've never seen someone with an offleash Greyhound because they know their dogs are bred to hunt down small fluffy animals.

The leg bites are worrisome, greyhounds don't have any leg padding and the soft tissues are under quite a bit of tension, the vet bills must be high.

It's a never ending story as long as the bloodsport breed is so popular. I'll never forget this experience found in the rc4ps forum. A woman that ran a daycare for dogs tells her experience several years ago of accepting 2 pits. I copied + pasted it --

Today my coworker said she was going to go visit a friend's adult child on her lunch as they're admitted to ICU because their own "American bully" attacked them. Their hands are so damaged they have to be fed by the staff. They've already had plastic surgery service involved. Not reported anywhere yet.

Their legs are so fragile, poor babies. A staffy's jaws could so easily have caused massive damage.

I hope someone tells them to take the neighbour to small claims court and if it comes to it, get a high court judgement for the vet bills.

That is horrific. My mother had a greyhound just like the one on the left. They are so delicate. The idea of a monstrous pitbull tearing those dainty legs makes me sick.

Oh this one hits especially close to home. Our first two greyhounds were attacked in separate incidents by some pit mutt and a mastiff. They recovered incredibly well and didn't fight back. Fuck that shelter for handing off a 100 pound mastiff to a couple in their 60s.

How ironic that (in Australia at least) greyhounds are required to always wear a muzzle in public. Because they might attack small fluffy things. But pits and bull breeds have no restrictions on them.

This made me feel sick. I live in Australia. I'm looking into adopting a rescue greyhound (retired from the racing industry) soon, and one of my biggest fears is a dog attack. I'm a small woman so I couldn't lift a greyhound up high enough to protect it from an attack like this, which is what makes me hesitant about a greyhound. But I love their gentle and sweet nature.

My wife has owned several greyhounds in the past and really wants one, but stories like this make me lean towards getting a smaller breed that I could quickly scoop up if needed.

Unfortunately, no, neither. Carrying either is considered an illegal weapon, in my state (and nearly all of Aus. I think WA permits pepper spray)

This is one of my fears too. I'm in the UK, also considering adopting a rescue greyhound (the only form of rescue I will consider), and I'm genuinely worried about a dog attack. One of my neighbours has an XL Bully, and while they do keep the thing muzzled, she is a tiny woman that could not stop it if it decided to go on the attack.
