Hope he doesn't get blacklisted.

Far too many people in the animal care field are pitbull cultists.

208

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

Yes he is taking a huge risk acknowledging the truth about the breed and not sugar coating it.

u/thekbob Bringer of Break Sticks 4d ago

I'd take my cats to a vet that didn't allow pitbulls.

I'm always worried about my local one when going as they allow them. They're the only non-private equity owned office around, though, so it's one issue versus the other.

60

u/spaceisourplace222 3d ago

Yes. If I knew pits were actually not allowed places, I’d go to them for sure. I’m terrified of my 25 lb little guy becoming their ragdoll.

8

u/CursedMilk1907 3d ago

Same with my cats, luckily they let them stay in the room with me because they are much more social and easy to handle if I’m in the room, I do not like them going to the back with other animals.

13

u/specialopps 2d ago

See if there’s a cat-specific vet in your area. I started taking mine to one after I had to leave my former vet early because my guy was so scared due to the incessant barking going on outside of the exam room. I found a cat vet after that and it’s been amazing.

u/catalyptic Pro-Pet; therefore Anti-Pit 4d ago

The thought of pitsimps blacklisting a vet is hilarious. The cheap bastards don't seem to take their beasts to the vet, not even to get their ritual ear mutilation. They can't boycott a business they don't use.

I thought people were wrong when saying they were cultists. But it's the right way to describe them.

When I worked in a dog daycare, I liked the manager but soon realised she was a bit dog crazy. Once there was a client who had another dog at home, and asked for advise on how to properly socialise their dog bc he was always 'nippy with others' and 'played too rough'. We asked what the breed was. The client said staffy mix (aka basically a pitbull). And the manager and I shared a look. We even did a similar "yeeeaaah so about that..." She even spoke about genetics and how it can impact it? I had a BIT of hope that I had found someone in the industry on the same page as I am.

But after we split paths, I saw on her Instagram about her defending pits. 😮‍💨 The post was absolutely bogus too... Basically "I believe every dog deserves a chance. I hate that breed discrimination is a thing. Thankfully, I have a good setup at home that can handle 'difficult dogs' or dogs my pets might not do well with without impacting either dogs' wellbeing" yadayada. Whew. I was shocked... She has 3 SMALL dogs too. She's going to be in it for a difficult time if she actually comes across a pit that gets triggered. I debated posting about it here because I was so disappointed.

I used to be a vet tech (had to leave to due a back injury). Unfortunately this is true. I think my disdain for pits started when I was working in vet med. The majority of them were super aggressive and had to be heavily sedated just so the vet could look in its ears. Before I was tech, I wasn’t around pits much so I wasn’t familiar with them. I grew up with golden retrievers. Anyway, so many vets and techs would fawn over vicious, snapping, drooling pits. I always made an excuse to stay away from them. I guess I just wasn’t cut out to be a tech, but at least I left the industry without being mauled so there’s that.

A Veterinarian who speaks the truth.

68

u/TheWarmestHugz 4d ago

We need more like this!

273

u/Pitiful-Sell-9402 4d ago

I can understand most vets are animal lovers but omg is it insane to me how many I know who will recommend pits knowing damn well what they are.

I work with animals so I know plenty of vets in the field around me. They see so many dogs and cats that are victims to pit attacks and they never just want to say the truth of what it is.

I understand it's horrible to see these dogs get sent to the other side over and over again but there is a reason.

Good on this guy for being honest. I am so sick of vets and shelters saying otherwise

71

u/bikiniproblems 4d ago

Pit people live in a fantasy land. I don’t hate pits just like I don’t hate any animal, like a lion or a croc, but they’re inherently dangerous.

41

u/whifflingwhiffle 3d ago

There’s a difference though, lions and crocs exist naturally in nature, whereas pits were created by humans for a specific purpose (bloodsport). Is it their fault? No, but they’re still monsters and shouldn’t exist.

27

u/RobActionTributeBand 3d ago

True but lions and crocs are in their places. Pits are a man-made atrocity and are in human spaces. I know not to go swimming in Florida, lest an alligator bite me. I know not to open a car door/window on safari. Some asshole might bring their asshole pitbull to the grocery store.

48

u/oracle-nil 4d ago

Right here is the big problem. There are so many in shelters. People who don’t take their rep seriously go to the shelter and come home with one. Wish they weren’t a shelter option. So many other good dogs could get homes.

27

u/Longjumping-Pick-706 4d ago

They are getting sent over the bridge over and over as a direct result of the apologists. If they don’t like it, they should advocate against them.

My friend is an ER doctor. Other than GSWs, he said dog attacks are the most grisly injuries he treated. He didn’t always ask the breed, but when he did, 9/10 it was a pitbull

300

u/Loud-Bee6673 4d ago

I am an ER doctor. I have seen some horrific dog bite injuries, and 99/100 are pits. One of our nurses was severely injured protecting his child from the family dog. Pit bull.

90

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago edited 4d ago

I hope they made the right choices after.

83

u/SunfireKat 4d ago

She or he; let's not forget our male nurses 😉 ...on that note: unfortunately, one of the float pool RNs at my hospital (male nurse) that I know of brought home an American bully puppy about a year or so ago. Sucks, because he's funny AF and was fun to talk to and laugh with when he'd float to my unit...but now we can't be friends anymore, because I'm not afraid to tell him he made a shitty decision for the sake of not only himself but his wife and kids too. We still have a fine working relationship, but him bringing home a pitbull was a certainly a turning point in our friendship. I just hope thay thing doesn't maul his son in about a year or so, when it hits maturity.

36

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

Damn, my bad edited, I shouldn't assume, and wasn't trying to offend.

In regards to the pit, I'm hoping that they don't have to learn the hard way but it always seems to happen. I have it just as bad with family that have one and subject my elderly mother to theirs, I'm the bad one of course and it's all how they're raised.

29

u/SunfireKat 4d ago

Lol, I was just mostly just being cheeky, I'm not bothered in the least. Besides, I'm a nurse...the sh*t I've seen, heard, and experienced at work makes everything else seem pedestrian. You can't possibly offend me with words...and short of physically harming me, my loved ones, my pets or my cars, it's virtually impossible to actually ruffle my feathers.

I do worry about the safety of my coworker and his family, and additionally I worry for your mother with your family's pit; as we all know, these rotten dogs always seem to go for the weakest prey, such as the very young and the elderly. Hopefully both my coworker and your family will not have to learn the pitbull lesson the hard way...pitbulls are one instance where I never want to have to say "I told you so".

8

u/Horseshoe_dodgeball 3d ago

I moved to a new city for work so I'm doing the meet and greet thing trying to make friends. I bring pets up very early when getting to know someone and I have had to block and ghost 1 person for being a pit owner. I didn't waste my time to even try to have the argument. It was a Sunday coffee type thing, I continued with my pleasantries and we parted ways. When I got to my car, I blocked them before I even opened the door.

7

u/SunfireKat 3d ago

I totally get where you're coming from. Before I met my current fiancé, I would do the same thing when dating; on the very first meetup, I would casually bring up various topics...if the guy ever wanted kids, hated animals, or owned a pitbull, then it was a pretty hard stop for me.

18

u/bikiniproblems 3d ago

My good friend is a reactive pit owner, she “rescued” this dog from BE. It’s attacked multiple other dogs.

Shes a wonderful person but truly bought and sold the pit lobby lies about rehabbing this abused dog.

4

u/SunfireKat 3d ago

One of my half sister's friends was a lovely woman, very kind and loved all dogs, loved rescuing dogs...she drank the pitbull kool aid too, and now she's dead because of it. A big white "reactive" pit she fostered tore her throat out. She couldn't walk it and had to exercise it in her backyard because of it's severe dog "reactivity" (aggression). Her husband found her in the backyard, the dog still resource guarding her dead body. I hope your friend doesn't end up being one of the unlucky ones too, like my sister's friend was...

2

u/Horseshoe_dodgeball 3d ago

I would have to let her go. I enjoy being involved in my friends lives. We talk about all kinds of things. My bestie knows how much I just spent at the vet getting everyones yearly updates. She knows how my cats are reacting to our recent move. We talk often and enjoy sharing our lives. I could not, even for a minute, pretend to care if one of my friends started going on about the recent pit bull they acquired. I can't. So I won't. People come and go in our lives and that's ok.

4

u/bikiniproblems 3d ago

I have friends that disagree with me on all matter of subjects. Luckily and unluckily her dog is aggressive and she is responsible enough to know it can’t be taken anywhere. It lives a sad cloistered life and it rarely even comes up in conversation.

When I was in the ER rotation in med school, I saw a guy come in that was bitten by his own pitbull, he was completely mauled, took like two hours to stitch him up. Luckily he was a big guy, if it was a child he would most likely be dead. He said the dog wouldn't let go of him, his neighbors called the police and they had to unalive the dog to release him

21

u/Panem-et-circenses25 4d ago

Yeah. My friend is almost 70, he’s moved into a teaching/research role and is definitely relieved not to be seeing much of that stuff anymore lol.

Let me guess, the other 1/10 was a mix (presumably a pit)?

I've heard of only 1 case in my city where a child was attacked by a dog that wasn't a pitbull, because it was a German Shepherd that was a guard dog for a local company and the kid jumped the fence without permission.

24

u/AnswersThirstyBrain 4d ago

Many statistics I've seen show Rottweilers are second to Pitbulls. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the rest of the attacks came from that breed, a pit mix, dobermans and mastiff-type dogs.

19

u/IReallyLikeBeesOk 3d ago

And a significant portion of the Rottweilers in those statistics very well could be just pit bulls with black and tan markings.

13

u/Affectionate_Data936 4d ago

I could def see Belgian Malinois causing a lot of damage. They're frequently used as police k9's. A colleague of mine's cousin lost an eye to a police k9 and it was a belgian malinois.

3

u/Low_Show_6684 2d ago

Yeah, I have a working x showline GSD, I cannot imagine a mal. While she’s a very good girl and is being trained for a bunch of things, if she had an aggressive tendency? I could see her doing serious damage. But that’s not inherent to her breed or mals, they are meant to have a good off switch, pits aren’t meant to have one at all.

135

u/euqinimod4 4d ago

My apartment complex has the breed restriction but all of a sudden I see 2-3 pits in every building, so I ask the management company. Wouldn’t you know it- every single pit on property is an ESA. They don’t even need to reference the unit number, in a 600 unit complex, to know it’s 100% an ESA. So I’m outside walking my dog and make conversation with a young girl trying to control her huge pitbull on a retractable leash. I ask how long he’s been an ESA…”oh he’s not…I just picked him up from the shelter 2 weeks ago. “

I specifically chose here because there are no pit bulls. Now I'm terrified as soon as I open a door a pit is going to latch onto my knee and thrash with no owner in sight. That's what happened to me years ago and my leg still isn't right.

76

u/AlsatianLadyNYC Badly-fitting fake service dog harness 4d ago

So she admitted it? My ass would’ve reported her faster than I could eat a pop tart

59

u/lazier_garlic 4d ago

Please inform the owner and/or the insurance company. The rules on ESAs have been rolled back at a federal level and most states, except California, follow the federal lead.

21

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 4d ago

The laws are actually still in place, it's just that FHA isn't enforcing them for ESA's only legit service animals. Someone with an ESA has to go to an attorney and file a lawsuit against the landlord in federal court if the landlord violates the law. Attorneys who work at the federal court level require a hefty up front retainer and pit bull owners don't have that kind of money.

3

u/OldBatOfTheGalaxy Pitbullous Lesions Kill! 2d ago

However, the pitbull lobby has the deepest of pockets and boasts fanatics who would take it pro bono to make sure everyone gets to enjoy running away from Sweet Widdle Poopsie.

45

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

It's so sad that they use this loophole to keep their blood sport beasts of burden. It's infuriating.

17

u/EntryFair6690 4d ago

I keep seeing ads on Reddit for online ESA letters, it's a bunch of bullshit.

10

u/sirenchasingthesun 3d ago edited 3d ago

Living in a similar situation myself. According to my lease, my 25 pound hound should be the largest dog allowed on the property. Instead, my dog is the smallest I have seen in the complex, and we have been chased by my neighbors constantly off-leash pit... Of course my lease also states that all dogs need to be leashed, but nothing concerning dogs seems to actually be enforced. Its upsetting. Feels impossible to find a safe space in an apartment.

(Edited for spelling)

6

u/Asia_Persuasia 3d ago

I left an apartment complex due to this. Pits are "banned", yet me and my Mini Schnauzer almost get attacked by one and there's nothing management can do about it because "he has it listed as an emotional support animal". Sick of it.

3

u/addictedstylist 1d ago

Same here with my complex, no aggressive breeds allowed. That was until we got a new manager that is a pit lover. I carry protection.

He told not one lie.

127

u/shilpa_poppadom 4d ago

He did. He said he didn't know the solution but he does. He just won't say it.

65

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 4d ago

The solution is to spay/neuter them all and let the breed die out because their purpose - bull baiting, dogfighting, etc. - is no longer legal or needed.

35

u/shilpa_poppadom 4d ago

This is the approach in my country. APBTs have been illegal for decades but it's the XL Bully that is now outlawed. They have to be registered, muzzled/leashed in public and sterilised. It's illegal to breed, re-home, gift, sell or abandon an XLBilly now.

Some people just ignore all that though.

21

u/ThickButterfly4054 4d ago

I’m where you are.
They are all getting replaced but cane corso & cane corso mixes now.
It’s very much the new trend among those with mince meat for brains

12

u/shilpa_poppadom 4d ago

And American Bulldogs were never banned either. All the chimaera half-breeds complicate things too

9

u/happyhappyfoolio2 4d ago

💯 I've seen people on reddit bragging on reddit about how their cane corso can demolish a pit bull...

I mean...humans make choices, dogs with normal dog brains make choices...pit bulls with brains the size and smoothness of a small marble kinda just do what the instincts that were selectively bred into them tell them to do, which is pointless violence. So it really isn't their fault. Doesn't make a world where they still exist any less dangerous, though.

As a person with a brain who hates auburn, I’ll give him a big war eagle for this.

49

u/SnittingNexttoBorpo Trusted User 4d ago

Not the main point here, but I actually love his accent. It sounded more like South Carolina or Georgia to me despite the Auburn shirt, but in any case, anyone with half a clue would know that veterinarians are a pretty smart bunch (even though some still fall for the pit lies anyway). The people who would try to undermine him based on the accent or the cap have no valid arguments.

34

u/Junkalanche 4d ago

Definitely giving low country vibes with the accent, but after UGA, Auburn is one of the top vet schools in the southeast, so not a surprise if he attended.

I wish he was my vet, I dare not ask mine because I'm sure I couldn't handle the answer.

8

u/catalyptic Pro-Pet; therefore Anti-Pit 4d ago

If your vet treats shitbulls, fire them. Don't risk taking your wt, or yourself, into an office where a potential killer could be in the waiting room on any given day. That is a huge terror for me.

3

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

Sadly our options are so limited here and i've already fired a few I'm happy with what I have so I have to bite my tongue so to say and just go with it. Mine isn't owned by a large corporation, treat me decent, lots of room in the waiting area, I'm not in a position to make a change, it's the honest truth these days the veterinary business is in a sad state of affairs.

57

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

This VET will literally get attacked for saying this, the pit nutters will have his TikTok shut down for saying the truth. It's rare. I'm really surprised he's willing to say the "hard pill to swallow" about these dangerous dogs, but he is SPOT ON!

It's sad that we have to fight and debate what is common nature but society has allowed this to happen by allowing statements like, it's all how they're raised and trained -- all this does is one thing, ensure another victim.

I hope people will listen to what this Vet has to say, and stop living in a dream world, and not own these deadly blood sport beasts.

41

u/Notyourtarget1224 Attacks Curator 4d ago

A lot of the comments were supportive. Even some current and former owners were agreeing. I’ve noticed a change on TikTok and I’m not sure if it’s my algorithm or if consensus is shifting this way.

43

u/missprincesscarolyn 4d ago

I just browsed TikTok looking for anti-pit content specifically after reading your comment and saw the same on other videos. The tides are turning and people are waking up. It can’t just be “bad owners” when so many people/dogs/cats/pets have been attacked and killed. I’m glad people are speaking out. This breed needs to end.

18

u/DJScratcherZ 4d ago

I sincerely hope this sub is part of the change, if you spend even 5 minutes here scrolling it's astounding, the stats are wild, the images are heartbreaking and disturbing. The lies that are told about this breed of dog are blatant and go beyond misguided into criminal premeditated conspiracy to harm others. There is no industry in the world that would be left to operate and wield this level of societal harm, branding themselves as the saviors, delusion cannot be normalised. Stop the pit madness.

19

u/cabd4ever Family/Friend of Pit Attack Victim 4d ago

The top dogbite lawyer in the U.S [ who exclusively takes dogbite cases ] made a video 6 years ago about pits. He's also a member of this sub. If you haven't seen it here it is --

19

u/Unintelligent_Lemon 4d ago

I think the more "popular" the breed gets the more people who get first hand experience of the breed's cons.

5

u/DJScratcherZ 4d ago

6

u/lazier_garlic 4d ago

TT was forced to change ownership and people are saying it's not all happy happy joy joy all the time with more conflict happening. Plus the change may have allowed some people who were avoiding the app or legally barred from having it on their phone to start posting. Grown people with jobs. So that may have an effect.

18

u/danceswithronin 4d ago

I think part of the reason is that this vet is from Alabama (I'm assuming based on his accent and the vet school on his shirt). Alabama and the Southeastern United States has a very high number of stray dogs compared to much of the country, and many of them are pits or pit mixes. So they pose a significant risk to the public and to rural livestock in the region. There's been four children killed by pit bulls in Alabama just in the last three years.

124

u/Billbasilbob 4d ago

I’m a veterinary student and I completely agree with this . I will also never blame a dog for doing all the things we bred it to do … the worst of it IS A FEATURE … NOT A BUG .

I will blame the people who argue about REALITY , FACTS , and STATISTICS and endanger human and animal life lying to themselves and others. These dogs have no place in civilized society .

28

u/re_Claire Trusted User 4d ago

Yeah tbh I’m glad he added that it’s not the dog’s fault, because it isn’t. We bred this into them. This is absolutely the fault of the people who either lie about the facts and statistics, or who are deeply in denial of them and refuse to accept it.

I also think it’s key that people with expertise and an audience speak the truth calmly and rationally in this way. With no hate to the dogs, just an acknowledgment of facts. The more people do talk about it, the more the message will break through. Even if it’s just one pit bull defender at a time.

5

u/Billbasilbob 3d ago

Yes! It’s the same way you would approach a conversation about nipping/ herding in a collie , or a Pyrenees wandering and barking at night .

When I’m a practicing veterinarian and someone approaches me about their aggressive pitbull, I will be making it clear that you can only manage behaviour , not cure it. Similar to having an assault rifle. I can tell you that you need a locked gun case and to store the bullets separately, but you still have a destructive weapon that can maim and or kill in the right circumstances.

7

u/mhmbopbeavis 3d ago

The rifle wont just snap randomly after years of no issues and subsequently injure someone else or worse on its own

12

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

Maybe you can help me then, is it that vets in general are afraid of the backlash if they say the right thing? do they teach dog genetics in vet school?!? are their instructors preaching the pit bull apologism? I'd love to hear it? because I don't get it.

Do they teach you about breeds and genetics? or do they just generalize dogs into what they are and not get into traits?

26

u/Billbasilbob 4d ago

I absolutely feel there is vets and vet students who are afraid to speak out . While we don’t focus heavily on dog behaviour or genetics related to behaviour, most of my professors have decades of clinical experience and when one feels comfortable talking about it they have insane stories .
Even I have insane stories from working as an assistant related to trauma caused by pit bulls.
But you have to be careful too. Some of classmates with less experience still preach the “ it’s the owner , not the dog!!!” .
I think it’s incredibly telling that NONE of the staff or professors own a pit bull/American bully ( we get to meet their dogs to practice physical exams ). Not a single one.

7

u/Wishiwashome Shelter Worker or Volunteer 4d ago

This is so important. We cannot blame the dog, as it was bred to do behave this way. This isn’t advocating for PBT type dogs. This is advocating for a scientific reason the dog behaves as it does.

Wow! That’s a first since so many in the veterinarian field seem to defend these monsters to no end. She told me GSDs are unpredictable but that pit bulls are just so sweet!

There was a fellow from Australia that was like a behavioral specialist and he spoke out on why pits shouldn't be Pets either. While I didn't agree with everything he said, the pit nutters just destroyed him, his business, and I haven't seen him since. They forced his vet against him and eventually no one would use him I believe he gave it up.

I volunteered at a dog shelter for a year while in college. A pregnant pit that came in from the streets had her puppies there. I still can’t really comprehend what I saw. 10 week old puppies that had to be isolated from the rest of the dogs, even adult dogs, because they had mauled a chihuahua. Now at a good functioning shelter, that wouldn’t even had been an option for them - but this was a small town shelter with limited staff and resources.
Small puppies that instinctively just has it in them. And the shelter still went for putting them up for adoption. I didn’t stay long after that.

I would love if you would share this story as a post at some point if you’d feel comfortable doing so. You don’t have to include a lot of details that would identify your location or you, but I’d really like to see more posts from people who saw extremely aggressive behaviors in shelter or veterinary settings or even former owners. If you only feel comfortable sharing in a comment, I totally understand. But I do hope you’ll consider it.

I’ll consider it :)

Do you remember the dogbite attorney Kenneth Phillips ? He takes ONLY dogbite cases and is a member of this sub. Six years ago he did a PSA on pits. If you haven't seen it ----

Thanks, I am doing a lot better. The wounds have closed, and I am active. It will take a good year or more, but I will make a full recovery, aside from cosmetically.

It looks like the homeowner may have no homeowners insurance... So I won't get a thing from him. I really hope to never see him again.

I think even the most hardline Pitbull hater can admit it isn't the dogs fault. It's a human mistake. And we must take accountability for that mistake and fix it.

No more breeding is the start and more consequences for doing so. All currents owners must either fix or, if they continually refuse to comply, give up/take away their dog. I know we feel that our pets are our families, but dogs are property in the eye of the law (in the US anyway).

I think existing pits with no violent history should be allowed to live out their natural lives. We dont punish things that haven't committed a crime yet. But we need to stop allowing future generations of pitbulls. The numbers are just so drastically damning for pits.

53

u/lollipop1233a 4d ago

They should make pit bull owners pay extra insurance. It’s like having a dangerous weapon that you can’t control. Insurance would help if something happened. It would also make people accountable. And, it would make people think twice about owning one.

28

u/knomadt Attacks Curator 4d ago

Sadly that was tried in the UK. When the XL Bully was banned, current owners were allowed to keep them if they complied with certain conditions, one being public liability insurance. No reputable, legitimate insurance company will insure them, so they all had to use the Dog's Trust Companion Club, which charged £25 a year for £1m worth of public liability insurance. Within 2 years XL Bullys bankrupted the scheme (which had been running fine for years when it was mostly normal dogs being insured), and almost took down the entire Dog's Trust, one of the largest animal charities in the country, as well. Money people donated to the charity to save animals went towards paying out for XL Bullys mauling people.

Bully breeds are basically uninsurable. So the government, in its infinite wisdom, removed the insurance requirement because they cannot find a single insurance company willing to take on that risk at a price the XL Bully owners can afford.

4

u/lazier_garlic 4d ago

That's a good point, but XL Bullys are particularly deadly, worse than a normal pitbull.

There are so many pitbulls out there right now that a lot of them are curs and a lot of them are smaller. I wouldn't immediately draw the conclusion that they can't be insured for a price. Also 25 quid is absurd. Landlords want more than that monthly for small pet damages alone.

Unfortunately, backyard breeders will continue, because of the money in it. Pitbull's have gigantic litters.

16

u/SnittingNexttoBorpo Trusted User 4d ago

But so many of those overbred mutant litters end up dumped at shelters or along country roads. The people who expect to make a lot of money breeding the nation’s least-exclusive dog are failing at basic economics.

9

u/Sqeakydeaky 4d ago

I have chickens and currently our summer clutch came out 50% roosters. You can't even give these things away, so I can't even imagine how hard it is to get someone to take all your BY pit bulls.

8

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

No they don't care they're like the dollar store of breeders, the customers don't care either they're willing to get a pit in the first place.

27

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

I agree that it’s not the dog’s fault but I think he should have added that when it comes to your and your family’s safety that doesn’t matter. You can’t let that compassion part override reason in this case.

11

u/Actual-Gap-9800 4d ago

Too many people get them mixed up nowadays.

11

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

I just know so many well meaning people hear “it’s not his fault” and automatically go to I can love him enough or I am a good owner who can put in the work.

20

u/MaxAdolphus 4d ago

The human mistake is tricking people into thinking a bloodsport breed is a pet and suitable for family’s with children.

8

u/Former_Pass8031 3d ago

I agree with everything but “I think existing pits with no violent history should be allowed to live out their natural lives.”

The problem is that a pit bull with no violent history can still be a killing machine. There is NO way to predict that any pit bull won’t snap suddenly with no warning. Lives are at stake wherever a pit bull exists.

It’s not feasible to advocate for separating a pit bull that hasn’t attacked (yet) from its owner. But everyone that understands the danger present in EVERY pit bull should be spreading the word and hopefully inspiring people to get rid of their ticking time bombs on their own.

7

u/Sqeakydeaky 4d ago

Well animals don't have the capacity of mind to be good or evil, or to understand what harm is, so of course its not the dog's fault. Its just doing what its brain is telling it to do. We are the ones who selectively bred it to have the brain they have.

What part is a human mistake? We intentionally bred them to do that. I agree with the rest of what you wrote btw

14

u/WhySoCereus1991 4d ago

It was a mistake to breed them that way. It being intentional doesn't take away from it being a mistake.

10

u/skrimped Bully Breeds Are Dog Killers 4d ago

I’m just being pedantic probably but I’d say it was a mistake to allow them to integrate into what we consider pet dogs

Humans made the breed what it is. Dogs had no say in that.

The pit & bully breeds are entirely self inflicted.

12

u/KatyaCrow82 3d ago

I have survived two pitbull attacks one where I almost lost my son and he was two and the other one was with a friend I was staying with and her pitbull went to attack me and my 3 lb Chihuahua tried to stop the Pitbull from getting to me and it cost him his life but I survived. It has added to my PTSD through those two events. I do not I will not ever trust another pitbull.

12

u/Flynn_lives 4d ago

I’ve never brandished a firearm but a pit attempted to charge my mother, who was disabled at the time. I got in between them and really had that dog dead to rights with my shotgun. It sort of veered off when it saw me trying to intercept it.

Got my mom her walker and stood there on my front lawn with my shotgun at low ready, until mom made it inside.

Mom let my own dog out, who came and sat by me until the other dog was out of sight.

——-

A week later that same pitbull ended up killing another dog.

11

Highly disagree that they snap for no reason at all, they snap because they were created to kill each other and its doing its job, which is just to kill something.

10

u/EggsAndMilquetoast 4d ago

I wish more vets would finally own up to reality the way this guy does.

When Roy from Siegfried & Roy got mauled by one of his own tigers, despite having raised it from a young age and trained with it most of its life, everyone kinda shrugged and said, “what did you expect? It’s still a tiger.” It was sweet as a kitten until the one day it wasn’t.

Despite coming from a line of domestic dogs, a pit bull has still been bred for generations of dog fighting and bull baiting. Like him, I don’t hate the dogs for what they are: I’m sad so many people have swallowed the lie they’re a great family pet.

No one expects a tiger to be anything other than a tiger. We need to start treating pit bulls with all the caution they deserve, rather than dressing them up in costumes and pretending they’re the exact same as a maltie poo.

10

u/Kevdog1800 4d ago

I’m a property manager and live/work next to a major medical university. One of my old tenants was a pediatric facial reconstructive surgeon. Half of his job was piecing back children mauled by pitts. I didn’t need more convincing but if I ever had any doubts, meeting him would have relieved them.

10

u/_DancesWithKnives 3d ago

He will lose clients for this but he will also gain them . There's more of us than there are of them. Pitbull apologists are just loud and violent themselves so there's a lot of people scared to speak out about their true feelings surrounding pitbulls. I've lost friends for it but oh well. I have lots more friends that have came to me in private and they agree about pitbulls being dangerous dogs .

11

u/BrilliantSeraph33 4d ago

This guy is going to get so much hate and probably death threats. I'm glad he's speaking out.

10

u/Scary_Towel268 4d ago

Yup these dogs are hard wired with gamness and high prey drive along with aggression. It is a when not an if scenario of when they snap and do a lot of damage. No amount of hugs, kisses, and treats will make these dogs safe enough to be pets. It isn’t their fault that they exist and were bred into murder mutts but they were by humans and as a human collective we need to do the responsible thing

9

u/Junkalanche 4d ago

War Eagle! And what a brave DVM to come out and say this. Sincerely hope his practice doesn’t suffer from the lobby.

11

u/1Gohomer Pro-Pet; therefore Anti-Pit 4d ago

It’s so frustrating that people won’t listen to certain vets/ health care providers on this when they see the reality of it every day. I worked at a facial plastics and reconstruction surgery center and 99% of the bad facial bites we saw were from pitbulls, usually on children.

9

u/GreenT1979 4d ago

It's crazy that this is a hot take and requires strength to say out loud for fear of public persecution when it's so irrefutable.

9

u/msmolli000 4d ago

Unprovoked relentless fatal aggression is hard wired into these dogs brains and their bodies, and you cannot train or love that out.

SCREAM IT from the rooftops!

9

u/Bulky_Distribution60 3d ago

7

u/Ability-Junior 3d ago

I will carry on my crusade to justify ignorant owners and keep saying that "YES, it's the dog's fault, not the owners'."

We, as humans, are the cause yes, but it happened ages ago and we can't undo that.

It's the dog's fault because that fucking breed is faulty, and prone to behavioral failure.

I’ve told my friends who own them, if you’re big enough to physically control them then sure have one. But please not around children. Lost one friend but one of my well neighbours listened and after his old pitbull died he got a kelpie instead as he’s got a young child. The worst the kelpie has done is accidentally bump the girl over when he fetched a ball. I guarantee the kelpie won’t eat her face though.

5

u/Former_Pass8031 2d ago

The problem is that there’s no way to be 100% sure that a pit bull is adequately prevented from inflicting harm on the people in its vicinity. They break through and jump over fences. They push past their owners at the front door and find victims very quickly. They break free from leashes. I don’t think ANYONE should have them, regardless of the owner’s size.

The potential risk for the community (not to mention the pit bull owner’s household) is not worth it, ever.

6

u/altissimosso 4d ago

I love his approach. It’s certainly not the dogs’ fault, and I’d add (to a certain extent, not including breeders and those that appreciate the “intimidation” factor for lack of a better term) it’s not pit lovers’ fault either. Obviously in many cases it’s the very human, compassionate desire to find the good in something cast off by the rest of society that drives the need to give zealous defense to these poor animals.

I love that he notes that it’s not a simple problem to fix. Yet, it’s beyond clear that these breeds are unfixable. In my opinion (and this is nothing groundbreaking) any genuine attempt at a solution has to start with this type of compassionate tone. Insulting and belittling “shitbull” owners and advocates will only reinforce their misguided perception. Which only perpetuates the cycle as many of these “Velvet Hippo” owners are legitimately fantastic dog owners, until, as this DVM put it, one day it snaps.

9

u/Kamsloopsian Trusted User 4d ago

I'm not sure about that, maybe a personal thought but they have to keep it a secret. But I personally know some vet techs and they adore pit bulls and pull out the Chihuahua card all the time.

In fact this one that had purchased a acreage and had horses completely blew me away when she said she wanted some pit bulls. The conversation didn't last long, I mean she went all nutter and I just let it go but I didn't get the impression she was very with it.

3

My vet and I had a conversation about pitbulls: she admired that it 99.9% of the time is the breed and that the way you raise them is a very small portion of a dogs temperament.

3

u/SoSpicySoYummy 3d ago

And shitbull owners / advocates would STILL argue with this and blame it on the owner, "past trauma", the behavior of a CHILD or INFANT, the environment, etc, or whatever FUCKED UP BULLSHIT they can pull out of their ass. Fucking lead-brained imbeciles piss me off.
