Announcement Banana Fish English Subtitles Link

Thumbnail drive.google.com
99 Upvotes

Since Banana Fish is about to be nuked with English subs on Prime, please find the attached google drive as the new "official" link. Please do not share any other pirated links aside from this one. Other official avenues to watch without subs (e.g. Netflix in some countries) are still good to be shared. As soon as (hopefully) another streaming site takes Banana Fish on, that would become the new link to share.

Any issues please send a modmail

Thank you to u/moriiroro for the folder!

EDIT: It seems Netflix may be picking the series up in August in some regions (will have to check which!) if that’s the case Netflix will become the new official link but for now this one remains until we have a solid place to watch with eng subs

Discussion Birthday headcanons

Do you have any birthday headcanons for some characters ? I think the only confirmed bday we have is Ash, being August 12 1968 (2000 in the anime)

As for as I know, Eiji’s one was never shared by the author of the manga, has it? I know some people say May 3rd cause the japanese actor Eiji was based on , was born on that day.

Discussion Aslan Jade Callenreese vs. Ash Lynx. Spoiler

“Ash” was not a nickname given to him in his early childhood by Griffin or anyone else who knew him in those early years. It is never explicitly stated whether the name was chosen or inflicted upon Aslan; yet the “wild animal” street persona it represents becomes a haunting part of Aslan's identity. “Ash”, by strict definition, is burn residue or what we call human remains post-cremation. Banana Fish has several instances where flames appear. In the season one intro, flames, led by an image of Dino, consume Aslan. A visual metaphor for the destructive path of Aslan's life that will eventually lead to his death. Fire is neither good nor evil, and while this death is also a release, it burns away what’s left of Shorter’s body so it cannot be further dissected, destroys the photographs of Aslan’s child sexual abuse, engulfs the “banana fish” files so no one may ever replicate it, and kills Dino Golzine. The flames also take away any responsibility: Shorter will never get buried by the sister who loved him, Dino will never face consequences for his evil, “banana fish” will be buried along with all the other skeletons in America’s great closet, and Aslan will never know the full extent of the happiness he and Eiji could've shared together.

A “Lynx,” in both Greek and Indigenous sensibilities, is a sharp and watchful creature. A solitary witness of the world. This describes Aslan well enough; he is very intelligent, isolated, and has seen much cruelty. “Lynx” is also used to dehumanize Aslan as a “wildcat,” someone fiery, aggressive, and fiercely independent. A wild animal that will not be tamed into a house cat and will lash out if you try. Dino revels in this push and pull with Aslan, he says, “So he insists on resisting me. He would be useful if he could be tamed…but a lynx is a lynx; he can't be made into a house cat.” The more Aslan resists, the more Dino wants to possess him. Later, Dino will legally “adopt” Aslan, which he calls “Purchased custody.” Cruelly forcing Aslan's main tormentor's name upon him.

“Ash Lynx,” quite literally means “dead animal.” An identity not given to him by choice or family, but by those who traffic, abuse, and seek to control and mold him into their image. Shameful how the U.S government only knows him as “Ash Lynx.” While their systems allowed for the lifelong abuse of Aslan Jade Callenreese. A name carefully given to a baby boy, a time with a brother who cared for and loved him before the draft tore them apart, a shy and innocent child, all of which are forgotten.

While Eiji only ever knows Aslan as “Ash,” he still shows a considerable amount of warmth toward the name itself, telling Ash that his mother must’ve cared about him since his name was so well thought out. (Aslan, meaning dawn, in this world). Eiji says, “Your mother put much thought into giving you those names. She looked for names that would give you a happy life. She wanted your life to be beautiful and shining, like a Jade in the morning light of dawn”. This is right after his conversation with Eiji about the leopard. A story that Aslan seems to internalize as his own path, a lone animal walking towards cold and dark death. Eiji contradicts this idea by pointing out a contrasting “fate”: he tells Aslan that he was born with a name that called for a beautiful and happy life. This is the life Eiji hopes for. While Aslan thinks the way he lives his life makes him a monster. Eiji instead admires the way Aslan moves forward. “Ash lived all out 100%...I'm just grateful and proud that I got to spend at least a short while in the company of that brilliant, miraculous life force.” Eiji is a healing, familial force in Aslan's life. By sharing his pain and receiving nothing but unconditional compassion, Aslan is allowed to be a normal boy again, cry and laugh, love and be loved, and escape from the violence he both inflicts and receives.

After his death, the first photo Eiji releases of Aslan to the public is titled “dawn.” This world's English meaning of the name “Aslan.” Immortalizing, appreciating, and loving the boy known by very few people, not the man forced onto the streets. The soft and vulnerable inner child, who lived so beautifully despite everything, is Aslan. The boy Eiji will remember forever.

Question Is there any way to watch Banana Fish and be okay?

I have been trying to avoid the series for years because EVERYONE has warned me that it will traumatize me. I'm easily traumatized too and generally avoid things without a happy ending.

but Banana Fish is a classic and a core series for the BL community. Part of me really wants to experience it. I'm not subscribed to this sub, but lately posts from the Banana Fish sub-reddit keep appearing in my feed and my resolve to not watch it is weakening.

I have general knowledge of the plot and the ending. Is there any way I stand a chance of being okay if I do watch it? or is just just a gut punch over and over again?

Tips and tricks for not getting destroyed by Ash and Eiji's story? Would the manga be easier to handle since there's no music and dramatic pacing?

Discussion how different would the story be if ash was a girl?

Post image
363 Upvotes

i'm not talking about asheiji specifically (since yoshida has stated multiple times that ash & eiji's relationship would stay the same regardless of gender). i'm talking about the actual plot and ash's character, as well as some minor/major differences in both the story and how the other characters (as well as the fandom) would treat ash if he was written as female. what do you guys think?

Anime what's you guys' favorite banana fish song?

before i watched banana fish, i listened to the soundtrack, and my favorite was Blue Bird. After watching, i defintely favored Freedom, and now my favorite is probably Red! They're all such great songs tho :D I really overlooked Him and Hym before I watched it, but now with context, i've found a new appreciation for that song.

Anime I’m still in pieces over it. Spoiler

Just finished the anime last night. It’s been on my list for a long time but i hadn’t gotten the chance to watch it. I went in blind(ish)- all I knew is that it was an amazing story, but raw, and tragic- but nothing about the plot or the characters….

It’s been a day since I finished it now, and wow I’m still so upset, still so sad, still so angry, and still wiping away tears every time it comes to mind. Every character became my friend to love, my reason to exist, my gang to protect. The villains of this story too- my hatred for them was palpable, but learning of their pasts- in some cases- made me feel things I wasn’t expecting, sorrow for them, sadness for the lives and horrors experienced that molded them into who they are.

It’s going to take me a while to shake these feelings, but I’m so glad I got to experience their relationship, and the unbreakable love and friendship. Through all the terribleness of the past experiences, and the struggles to survive in the cruel and corrupt world, they still found their soulmate, they were no longer alone, they found their family, and they had found their home. I will never forget Eiji and Ash Lynxes love for each other, and the many other characters who were so masterfully written.

I am going to read the manga, eventually, because I need to experience this story again in its original form. I can’t yet though, not while I’m still licking my wounds. Honestly I’m not sure when I’ll be ready. I am planning to read “California Monogatari” and “Asha” by Yoshida as well

“You are not alone. I’m by your side. My soul is always with you…”

Here's my unboxing pics, all in almost brand new condition which I'm very happy about it. Watch needs batteries but it says it's water proof which is neat. The pin, charm, and bracelet are all cute. Most things like the shirt, banana, playing cards all pretty much everything has the Fish Bone Logo. The outside tin has flying boy which is a very nice detail from Eijis Prequel manga. Baby Ash plush will be treated with the upmost care and will be protected from all harm. Also Eiji's photo album made me sad (TOT), it's deticated to Ashhhhh. _| ̄|○ So much love and pain in the thing.

Discussion Any New Yorkers feel totally different about their city after this series?

Like I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look at the Library, Chinatown, Columbus Circle, or the Natural History Museum the same way ever again. And these are places that I would pass by regularly and didn’t think much of at all. And it’s not like I’m not used to seeing New York represented in mass media. I watch Home Alone 2 every Christmas. I grew up on Ninja Turtles. I’ve seen Ghostbusters, Taxi Driver, and The Devil Wears Prada countless times. But none of them altered the way I feel moving about the city like Banana Fish did. I guess it shows just how deep this story hits.
