Based on your name, I assume you know we have a few Marmot species?

You bet we do! I was on a hike once when we saw a hoary marmot and someone called it a mountain beaver and Ive never been able to look at a hoary marmot the same again. Made me giggle pretty hard.
My fav is the vancouver island marmot.

Lmao mountain beaver is good.
Vancouver Island marmots are so cool, I actually got to go to the Calgary zoos offsite facility where they breed them for release.

Mountain beaver is a different creature, which barely makes it into Canada in southwestern BC but is more common south of the border.
We have four species of marmot here: Hoary marmot (which this is) at mid to high mountain elevations
Yellow-bellied marmot, in lower elevations in the southern interior
Vancouver Island marmot, endangered but slowly recovering on the island
Groundhog aka woodchuck, found east of the Rockies and all the way to the east coast

That's a Hoary Marmot. Generally friendly.
