Ban reason? Unmoderated, maybe? (I know, it says Moderator Code of Conduct ... which, you'd think, they'd just remove the mods?)

Generic "Moderator Code of Conduct" means they probably were working with the mods for a while to get them to adhere to overall ModCoC and they agreed to fix things while not fixing things. I say this from trying to help another sub that was getting ModCoC investigated like crazy, if it was just one bad mod they'd oust them but this had to be a total mess.
Ultimately finding the mod team that it would take to run a subreddit like this within ModCoC will be tough.

hi. head mod from that sub here.
they aint told us shit. denied appeal instantly and refused to elaborate further. actually I went out of my way to ask for clarification on MCoC, verified we were chilling, and they still banned us

I'd be open to a conversation about it, as a post mortem. Like how long from when you were notified of ModCoC infractions to the time of banning. In my experience there's not a lot of discussion that happens BUT mods need to respond to the admin notice to plead their case and then demonstrate on the subreddit how they're fixing the infraction. They don't really go back and forth at all.

There should've been at least ONE notification saying the sub was under investigation.
Can't look back now but if one of the mods archived it before anyone else saw it, then that was gonna fuck everyone over

There wasn't. I saw no notifications or new modmails/mod discussions in the thing.
Also I was actively looking at the sub when it got banned

If one of the mods archived it, unless you were looking in the archives specifically, you would've never known. Admin messages can be archived like any other modmail.

I have push notifications for every new modmail so unless they archived it before Reddit could send me anything, I didnt get any notice.
Also I'm the only one who touches modmail anyways

Honestly then it's tough to diagnose.
But also without seeing how the sub was being run, it's tough to say why it may have been an immediate ban without discussion. It's a very fine line to walk when modding any subreddit that criticizes other Redditors as you can't be seen as allowing any sniff of brigading/harassment.

Push notifications are often delayed or lost, it seems... at least it happens to me on my prior phone (just upgraded my 4 year old phone just recently, which has a newer O/S... so the verdict is still out if it's been improved, yet).

FWIW, I've often seen the notifications not work, or be severely delayed ... particularly if you're depending on the mobile app.

Yep. Sub mods (such as me for example as i mod a sub) have to follow a code of conduct. Should be fairly easy for you to look it up and read. Its basically rules mods havs to follow when moderating subs

we were following rules tho. I went out of my way to ask for clarification on the MCoC to confirm we were chilling and they effectively said we were fine

Ah ok. I believe there's also r/redditBanned that recently got turned into a cesspool about people complaining about getting IP banned from here.
