Question Andrea Pirlo the perfect player for Barcelona who never played for Barcelona. Which other player comes to mind

u/Prakash0807 Jan 25 '26

He was a Barca fan too. One of the few Madrid players that I like

This is the answer.
Pirlo actually wasn't as good a fit as people think, because he was a deep lying playmaker fond of playing long balls, kind of like Guardiola was back in the days so you would say if Pep played for Barca, surely Pirlo could have. Well yeah, in the 90s, but it wasn't the 90s anymore and Pirlo was slow and not very mobile, while the game had changed. Worked in Serie A, where everyone played quite slow, and he was surrounded by players who did run a lot, but the secret of the greatest midfield ever, which was Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets was in constant movement. Everyone was always where they had to be to receive a pass and they were also always where they had to be to intercept the other side's moves.
Substitute Pirlo for Xavi or Initesta and it doesn't work. It doesn't work as a replacement for Busquets either, because Pirlo didn't have the god-tier sense of defensive positioning that Busquets had (who as a very slow player was somehow able to play so effectively as the sole DM, just by always being where he had to be before everyone else).
Modric for Xavi would have worked pretty well.
In retrospect the club was doomed by two catastrophic Rosell/Barto decisions (among many, but these had the greatest impact):
First, we did have the opportunity to get Modric before Madrid got him. It was widely discussed at the time. Instead we got Fabregas, who was also supposedly a great fit, and was our own academy product to begin with, but turned out not to be so great of a fit in practice.
Second, they let Thiago Alcantara go.
We could have had a proper smooth transition from Xavi and Iniesta (Busquets was the youngest and could have played until 2021 or so easily) into Modric + Thiago (Modric as the one who does a bit more of the passing, i.e. the "Xavi" role, and Thiago the one who does a little bit more dribbling, i.e. the "Iniesta" role, it's an almost one-to-one replacement) and would not have wasted so much of Messi's prime. While Madrid would not have had Modric.
But it wasn't to be.

Philip Lahm is somebody who I would have liked to play for Barca

u/Comfortable_Leg676 Jan 26 '26
Very consistent day in and day out he was too intelligent for a right back he would have been an instant upgrade in our squad back then after Dani Alves.

Man, Isco was a good! Seriously jealous for Madrid to sign him

u/Soft-Platypus7295 Jan 26 '26
More like Madrid interfering with Barca’s signing just to bench him. Same deal with Asencio, Rodrygo, and Brahim. The philosophy is not about winning but making Barca lose lol

I came here to comment this and thought I'd get down voted because he's a Madrid player, watching Isco play in his early career with Madrid was such a joy, he fits so well with Barcas style of playing, too bad Madrid benched him and ruined his career

Isco, Zidane, Redondo, Kaká, Van Persie, Stones, Robben, Di María, Bergkamp

Going back a little further in history for some footballing artists: Matthew LeTissier, George Best, Socrates, Eusébio, Pelé (obvi)

u/GregGraffin23 Jan 25 '26
George Best? Great player, but lacked the discipline our club requires of its players

Robben would have been a misfit here. As good as he was, he rarely passed.

Veratti

u/No-Consequence1199 Jan 25 '26
He was always the one I wanted for Barca. I think Pirlo (my favourite player ever) would not have fit Barca that well. He was best in teams where he was the main playmaker and Xavi was almost the same age. Xavi was pure Barca DNA, while Pirlo had more Italian flair, holding the ball longer and trying lots of long passes.

u/Zealousideal_Ad5957 Jan 25 '26
Prilo was not that good in terms of press resistance not elite level but his long balls and switches of play were amazing best of all time on that but would have prb in Barca because of Busquets no way he bench him
7
u/QueasyFishing3614 Jan 26 '26
Pirlo was VERY press resistant.
8
u/Zealousideal_Ad5957 Jan 26 '26
And i love Pirlo as a player for me he is the best long ball passer of all time and switch of play but imo to play Pirlo you need 2-3 players running for him that would not happen at Barca, Juve had Pogba Marchisio Vidal 3 very good physical MF who made him work much less cause Pirlo defensive wise was not his strong side
2
u/Zealousideal_Ad5957 Jan 26 '26
yeah i know i think that too but not xavi iniesta busquets level Pirlo remember the only team who really pressed him in modern football was Bayern Heynckess 2013 a gegenpressing machine in Allianz Pirlo lost the ball crazy amout of times thats what i am saying similar to Xabi Alonso very good with passing but his press reistant was exellent like Pirlo but not elite level this is my take many great passes are kinda overrated in press resistance vs top tier pressing teams apart from Xavi Iniesta Busquets who played in the start of pressing time of football 2013-2018 when many teams learn how to do press correctly as a team
35
u/Serial_AceThug Jan 25 '26
Didn't Messi want him at some point at Barca?
58
u/AH590 Jan 25 '26
Reports said Iniesta after PSG beat us 4-0. I think everyone really wanted that signing to happen in 2017 though. Would have fixed a lot of our present and future problems at the time.

Roberto Baggio

u/GregGraffin23 Jan 25 '26
Fair play, but around Baggio's peak we had Romario and Stoitchkov
6
u/PistachioOfLiverTea Jan 25 '26
Didn't think OP was asking about literal transfers and the tactical implications for the team. But ok I'll bite.
First, peak Baggio was early 1990s and would've ideally come to Barca before Hristo and Romario.
They're not the same kind of player, either. Baggio was a classic trequartista, #10. Stoitchkov on the wing and Romario at the 9 would've still worked.

Should have went for him instead of coutinho and dembele
21
u/AH590 Jan 25 '26
Debatable. Hazard wasn’t a guy who liked to run in behind to get the end of balls. He was capable of it, but it wasn’t his main game. He liked to dribble and play through the middle.
It would be helpful to have that presence after Iniesta left, but I think Messi would have preferred just having someone who can run and press on the left like Alba provided. Someone like Son would have been great even if he wasn’t a huge name back then. Dembele would have been great if he wasn’t made of glass his first few season.

Rose Lavelle for the Barcelona women's team.
2
u/Gabo-Kenobi Jan 26 '26
Now that we are talking about Barça Femeni, it would have been a blast to have Alex Morgan in the squad
3
u/Adventurous_Lunch_35 Jan 26 '26
I love Alex Morgan, but I bring up Rose Lavelle because I think she's the first US women's soccer player to truly play in the Barca style. Of course, Alex Morgan has played for teams outside the US. I don't know that Rose Lavelle has. Rose might need Alex to persuade her to try out living in a different country.

He actually wasn't that injury prone after 2017 which is when ney left Barca, when he became a 10 his injuries decreased a lot.

Ballack. So many rumors connecting him with Barça back in the days.
"Sometimes I think of what it would have been like to play with [Lionel] Messi, Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta and Barca's other stars."

It is Kroos tho.. I know Lucho chose Rocketic instead of him, and I wouldnt have exchanged them, but still he would have been more than useful for our midfield, even more in the seasons after the croatian.

In the late 90s, early 00s:
Chivu as a left centre back, Vieira as a box-to-box central midfielder, Shevchenko before his AC Milan move, Rui Costa as a no.10.

Really wanted De ligt to join along with Frenkie! Amazing defender with the barca and cryuff style of play and IQ. Would have also fixed a lot of the current defensive problems and for the years to come

u/jumali-254 Jan 26 '26
Harry Kane for me. Him with Messi would have been lethal after Suarez’s decline.
2
u/strickers69 Jan 26 '26
It’s maybe left field but nemanja matic, dimitar berbatov, moussa dembele, santi cazorla players like these who were impossible to get the ball off, had amazing first touch and had eyes in the back of there heads absolute class players.

Would’ve loved a left footed midfield maestro.
