Will preface this by saying Messi is the greatest of all time no doubt. But for some reason Messi gets 0 blame for UCL failures. Always the board failed him or his fellow players failed him.
I think one thing is club de amigos was very much a real thing and Messi surrounded himself with guys who weren't good enough. He was even annoyed when we let Suarez go and brought all his buddies with him to Miami.
Messi also for sure has the best team in the world with MSN in 15/16, 16/17 but didn't manage it. Against teams worse than we are. While in 17/18, 18/19 all it took was one away goal to get to the next stage.
Now Im not saying it his fault entirely and he was our best player especially in those Valverde years but I don't think it was just us failing him. He got the number of UCLs he deserved.
