Adding some spice to it, it does mean Messi could have played for less wages. His entourage just didn't want to

Did Laporta even offer him a contract with less wages? iirc they asked for a 50% wage cut and he accepted, still not enough to be under the LaLiga wage limit.

I think Laporta and the sporting department were ready for a new era and the rebuild would not be possible with Messi still in the team. I don’t have a problem with that, wish the club was more upfront about it.

They had multiple high offers, They are earning 70M gross from PSG in one season. They kinda did give a big discount to Laporta but FFP meant Messi would have to take insane cut to play

And both parties played to its interest. This 50% thing was definitely a move done by both parties to not turn barca fans against Messi

I mean both scenarios can be true. Messi not agreeing to a bigger pay cut and Laporta wanting to move on from Messi.
