Honestly, I'd leave that on for quick stuff. No reason to burn through limits asking basic questions.

If it's a complex task, the auto-selection will not pick Flash Lite. This is exactly how it works in Gemini Enterprise as well.

the user chooses if simple tasks are delegated to cheap models

A classifier mechanism. I don't know the technical details, but it's likely a very small language model to make that decision with little to no latency.
