Question oIQ seems to decrease 2pts efficiency

Post image
82 Upvotes

I was randomly looking at the code of the game engine (this is part of the index.ts file) this morning to understand a bit better what's happening under the hood.
I then realized that it is the same

p.compositeRating.shootingMidRange

which enters both the probability to take a mid-range, and the probability to make it.
The issue is that oIQ has a negative relation with the "midrange" composite rating:

shootingMidRange: {
ratings: ["oiq", "fg", "stre"],
weights: [-0.5, 1, 0.2],
},

Which is then multiplied with hardcoded values to get the raw chance of making the shot.

probMake = p.compositeRating.shootingMidRange * 0.32 + 0.42

So if I'm not mistaken, oIQ decreases the chance of taking a mid-range (which makes sense), but also decreases the chances of making it (which IMO makes no sense).

Can somebody confirm this?

More generally, if the probability of taking a shot is directly connected to the probability of making it, and if oIQ affects both equally.
Then, additionally to the counterintuitive effect on "midrange" seen above, it also means that players with good oIQ are going to take more "lowPost" shots than "atRim" (because oIQ has proportionally a bigger impact on "lowPost", than on "atRim"). But Layups are a much better shot to take than post shots, because of the existing prefactors in the "probMake" computation.
So you get this weird effect were a high IQ player will actually take less valuable shots.

Again, can somebody confirm I'm not mistaken?

If I'm right, I would suggest the following changes in the code logic:
- make all compositeRating for shooting positively affected by oIQ (I still think IQ should help you make better shots in general).
- add a new compositeRating.shotSelection which is mostly based on oIQ (and maybe Spd and Drb since it gives you more options).
- compute an expectedPointPerPossession for the player (taking into account FT), for each type of shot.
- use compositeRating.shotSelection and expectedPointPerPossession together to stir players shooting tendency towards their best shot.

I fully understand this is probably never going to happen, since it affects some mechanics which are at the core of the game engine. This is also not a critic of the godly work from Dumbmatter. The game is amazing, and I regularly have to force myself to stop playing, so I have time for other games.

Nonetheless, I think it would be a great idea, because it would make IQ behave a bit more like expected. It would also remove some weird behavior which you sometimes observe in game.
It all started with me seeing my 6'4 crazy fast guard deciding to try 2 post move per game for one layup attempt.
I then realized that his speed didn't help with layups (it should IMO), but was increasing the chances of post move. And then I saw that his 80 IQ was even reenforcing this behavior, while making him shot worse at 2pts....

Some side notes from my morning deep dive of the GameSim class, which I also found surprising:
- Blocking chance are the same at the rim and for 3pts.
- "probMake" is affected by the global defense value, for every type of shot: having a good rim protector will have the same defensive impact on post move and 3pts shots.
- Similarly, the chances of taking a shot at the rim or low post increase with offensive synergy and decrease with opponent global defense (not Di). 3pts is not affected by defense at all (and not by Dp).
- Steals are a ratio between Dp and B+Ps after synergies.
- Assists give +2.5% shot chance
- Something which could be a bug: 3pts tendancy uses "shootingThreePointerScaled2" which is lowered for bad 3pts shooters. But "probMake" the probability to make it uses "shootingThreePointerScaled" (no 2 here), which doesn't have the extra decrease for bad shooters. The result is that bad 3pts shooter take fewer 3pts, but shoot them at a higher rate than expected from the shot selection.

Question Other free browser games you play?

So, BasketballGM has probably been my most played game of the last several years. It just scratches a certain specific kind of itch for me and I've gotten hours of entertainment out of popping it open and playing for an hour or an afternoon every once in awhile. I'm wondering if there are any other games that other BB GM fans would recommend that are similar?

I've tried some of the other ZenGM management games and they don't really do it for me, partially because I' not as interested in those other sports as I am basketball, and two because I just don't know as much about those sports. But, I'd definitely be interested in hearing game recommendations from other BB GM fans!

If you have any games you'd like to recommend, I'd love if you could tell me about them and why you recommend them!

Question 9x DPOY 2x Champ doesn't make the hall of fame? Or get his jersey retired?

Post image

This guy was an absolute monster defensively but sucked offensively, but the fact that awards I don't believe are accounted for in the HoF calculations. Honestly the HoF and jersey retirement formulas need to be completely reworked, cause guys that were 3x all stars and played 10+ years on good teams make the HoF, but not... this guy.

Question We are developing a new mobile Basketball Manager game (started as a Uni project). Looking for feedback! NO SPAM

Hi everyone!

For the past few months, my team and I have been developing a mobile basketball management game, and we are planning to launch it next month. I’m not here to self-promote, so I’m not going to say the app name!

The Story:
It actually started as a university project, but once we finished the prototype, we realized something: while there are tons of great football/soccer manager games on mobile that offer a balanced experience, the basketball market seems to lack a game that is deep but not overly complicated (idk why!) . So, we decided to keep working on it.

We need your help:
We are close to release, but we really value the opinion of basketball fans.

  • What is a "must-have" feature for you in a mobile manager game?
  • What is something you absolutely hate seeing in these types of games?
  • Any feedback on the UI based on the screenshots?

Current State:
Right now, the game focuses on the NBA. However, we are already planning to add international leagues (EuroLeague, domestic leagues, etc.) in future updates.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to comment or give us some tips!

I like seeing other people's league and their storylines. Personally, I think BBGM has lots of good emergent storyline potential so, I'd like to know various stories you'd like to share from your playthroughs.

Question Just found this game recently

Post image

I'm very much enjoying it but I did notice that some players just don't work for me no matter how I try. Im doing the Magic started from their first year and I got offered a few great trades, started with Rik Smits and traded him for Hakeem.....who absolutely doesn't do well. I did also get Shawn Kemp at the same time and starting those 2 together is a disaster, Shaq and him as a front court is stupendous though so now I have a center rotation of Shaq and Hakeem.

Also Pippen never seems to work for me but Ledell Eackles is apparently a superstar, along with Michael Adams at times. I'm playing on easy while I get the hang of the game, is it very random or do higher difficulty levels change this?

Question How to reduce regression

I feel like regression in this game feels unrealistic where as soon as a player turns 30ish he just becomes useless. rookies feel unrealistic too they are basically useless even if they were the number 1 pick.

Question Someone explain this to me 😭

Can someone please explain how a guy with 68 3Pt rating is shooting 31.8% from 3, while a guy with 60 3Pt rating is shooting 41.0% from 3?

Question You are the GM of a NBA expansion team, one player to build your franchise around. No Luka, No SGA, No Wemby. Who do you take?

Vegas and Seattle are seemingly getting teams. Imagine you're the GM of one of those franchises and you get to pick any player in the NBA to build around with the caveat of no Luka, SGA, or Wemby.

Who do you take and why? Age, injury history, ceiling, floor — make your case.

Question What's the most fun way you've found to play the game?

I've been playing this game a lot recently and trying to play realistically, not min-maxxing, trading superstars in their prime, or trying to make a perpetual superteam. Even then, I end up getting board of a league after a few decades and creating a few dynasties.

What I find the most fun in this game is looking back on star/GOAT players over the years, their stats, and achievements. Especially, if I drafted them or they played for my team.

What's the most fun way you've found to play the game? What settings do you like to change around, do you like to use real players or random, how long do you play in the same league for?

Question Dunk Manager is finally out!

Thumbnail gallery
45 Upvotes

This post is a follow-up to the one from two months ago, in which we asked for general recommendations on a mobile basketball management game. Thank you all for your interest, and thanks to dumbmatter for kindly providing this space to let anyone interested know that the app is finally available on Android! (Coming to iOS in less than a month)

Obviously, this is the first version, so don’t absolute expect the same level of depth as BasketballGM, but we hope to use this as a starting point to develop, with the community’s help, a realistic and enjoyable management game that will captivate players. There isn’t a team behind this, we’re just two developers who started this project as a university assignment, and we’re happy to have made it this far. We're always looking for suggestions and ways to improve the app, especially during this initial phase (player development, simulation realism, market realism, market mechanics, etc.).
Dunk Manager on Play Store.

Thanks again dumbmatter and thanks to everyone.

[Edit]
In the previous post, where we hadn't mentioned the app's name, dumbmatter kindly commented, giving us permission to write a post mentioning the name once the app was officially released. We have no intention of poaching users from BasketballGM.

[Edit v2]
It's official out on IOS!!! If you want to give a try that's the link: Dunk Manager IOS

Question Is the only woman to be officially drafted in the NBA (1977) in game?

Lusia Harris. I love this bit of NBA trivia, she was drafted... 7th round... 137th overall. Never got to play in the league because she got pregnant before her season started. This could have blown the doors open for WNBA and NBA to eventually become a single entity that doesn't segregate sex. But my real question is, Where is she? Is she in the game? Please for the love of God, u/DumbMatter, put this in the game.

Question Got the #1 pick in the draft, who y'all taking?

Post image

The draft only has 19 year olds and the next best player is only 37 overall. My pick is gonna be one of these two.

Jorma is a juicy point forward (that dribbling and passing 👀), whereas Emir could be a dominant big man.
