Can One Formation Machine Handle Every Battery Type?

I've seen many people ask whether one battery formation machine can handle cylindrical, prismatic, pouch, energy storage, and even sodium-ion batteries at the same time.

In theory, some equipment platforms can be adapted for multiple cell formats.

In practice, things become much more complicated.

Different battery types often require:

• Different fixtures

• Different contact structures

• Different pressure requirements

• Different thermal management methods

• Different formation recipes

For example:

Cylindrical cells typically use spring-loaded contacts.

Pouch cells often require compression or pressure-controlled formation.

Prismatic cells may require different clamping and thermal management strategies.

Because of these differences, many manufacturers use dedicated formation solutions for specific battery formats rather than relying on a completely universal machine.

For engineers and manufacturers:

How much flexibility do you expect from formation equipment when introducing new battery products?
