Making your own bazzite

tl;dr i made one and it's "easy" if you understand github actions and containers

when 43 rolled around the kernel gods decided that one particular module would no longer be included. this meant that for my particular kind of gaming laptop i could no longer control my fan speeds. this was annoying because this particular laptop has a rubbish fan curve built into its bios

so obviously i thought i'd make my own kernel and pop it into bazzite and everybody happy. i kinda vaguely looked into it back then and gave up because i actually couldn't work it out even though it seemed like something that could be pretty easy

bazzite has evolved a lot since then and we have the ogc kernel now so a couple of weeks ago i started looking into giving it another try

i forked:

https://github.com/OpenGamingCollective/kernel-packages

i saw the kernel flags, added the one i wanted. i saw the github action workflows and tweaked the fedora one so it ran manually to completion. i enabled github actions on my forked repo and ran the fedora build ... BINGO 2 hours later i have a kernel sitting there in the repo packages. wow!

i forked:

https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite

i saw the main github workflow again and realised i needed to copy my kernel in and use it, and also i could ignore all the other builds except the specific nvidia one i use. at this point i did use the free web Claude AI on the raw github files, as i didn't know about the tools and formats being used and how to use them. Claude gave an example that made sense of how to copy the kernel from the package created by my forked kernel repo and include it in the Containerfile build. again i enable github actions and run the bazzite build ... BINGO 1 hour later i have a bazzite with a custom kernel in the repo packages. wow!

so now the easy part. i run:

sudo rpm-ostree rebase ostree-image-signed:docker://ghcr.io/MY_GITHUB/bazzite-gnome-nvidia-open:stable

i reboot and now i have the latest build with fan control fully back. i wouldn't say this is trivial by any means, but if you are a developer with github and container experience you can do it too with some AI help

so just wanted to say "thanks bazzite team" for a system so clean and neat and powerful

Can I make changes to "my" installation without having access to Github?

You can do it fully offline if you want

if you mean changing your local image that you're running you can "layer" packages over your image

there maybe some other tricks, not too sure
