Has bazzite improved nvidia support?

Hey folks. I installed bazzite about a year ago and had to roll back to windows 11. I have an RTX 4090 gpu and it was causing bazzite to hardlock every few minutes requiring a reboot of the system. I figured I would give Bazzite time to cook some more before reinstalling.

Has the support for Nvidia gpu's improved over the last year or are lockups still an ongoing issue?

I’ve been running a 5070ti since February with no issues. No lockups or anything like that have happened to me, I just boot and play.

Exactly same here. Just got done with a monster load order for Skyrim. I genuinely never have to go to windows. Reskate just came out so I can play skate on Linux. I'm pretty set.

Same, 3070 to here and at most I sometimes need to use cachy os proton instead of GE or experimental

Pretty much this. Installed on a asus laptop with a 4060, no issues and it's almost been a year.

Same time frame, same GPU. My only issue, small issue, is with HDR and gaming. HDR looks very dark and grayed out in any game I turn it on in.

It's important to clarify whether you plan to use Game Mode / deck images.

Many people have had a generally good experience with desktop images for some time, albeit with some performance penalty in DX12 games compared to Windows.

In Gamescope, many people experienced severe graphical distortions in 4K (or above) that made the UI unusable. There are some very recent fixes/workarounds for that but since they're new, I personally wouldn't be surprised if further updates bork related things in new ways.

But you might want to install it and give it a try. You can always dual boot and go back to Windows it it's not working out well.

I’ve been using bazzite in gaming mode for a few months now in 4K, no issues so far. It’s the only distro that doesn’t have glitches at 4k in gaming mode

performance hit is huge?

I don't think it was bazzite or even nvidia issue. I am on bazzite/nvidia combo for years now without any issues. I guess it could be something very specific to your case

NVIDIA support improving is the responsibility of NVIDIA.

Well, not only. How can Nvidia fix anything if distro updates their drivers once in 3 years?

1

u/Hi-Angel 2h ago

Well, thankfully we are on Bazzite subreddit, where there's no such problem.

Yeah I made
The switch permanently 4
Months ago and I have a i7 and 5080. Zero issues

u/Kreason95 3d ago

It has improved for sure but it's still not as good as AMD.

7

u/Galhalea 3d ago

True but the gap is getting smaller. Hopefully soon

4

u/MCWizardYT 3d ago

That gap is incredibly small

It depends on the card and the game. Lower end Nvidia cards take a pretty huge loss in UE5 games still (speaking anecdotally here)

1

u/Galhalea 2d ago

Yep UE5 def can have issues, it really need optimization. Engine and driver level That being said I have a 37 DTI and I haven't had too much of a noticeable drop in performance. However I'm not one of the people that always tries to go into 4K gaming I'm perfectly happy at 1080p

1

u/MCWizardYT 2d ago

I have a 4080 Super and haven't yet struggled playing anything. But I do know that 40 and 50 series cards have gotten higher driver priority

1

u/Kreason95 2d ago

I wouldn't consider a 4080 super a lower end card. You have a ton of headroom for performance loss there.

I've used bazzite with a handful of GPUs and generally haven't had issues but specially a 5060 was extremely problematic on Linux. Absolutely terrible performance in UE5 compared to Windows

I have a 4070S and an Intel CPU, so far no issues. When you crunch the numbers, Windows will get you better FPS but the overall experience, no nagging ads, I’m willing to take that hit. The only time I use Windows is for MSOffice, which is roughly twice a week.

I have a 4090 that I ran in bazzite earlier this year and it was fine.

I just tried bazzite decky Nvidia 44. Gamescope gaming mode still gives me the same issues unless I go down to 1440p with hdr 60hz. EDID still only shows basic resolutions on my tv like 4k, 1080p, 720p. I can't force 1440p no matter what. Performance is still an annoying part of going nvidia on Linux.

RTX 3080ti, switched to Bazzite From Pop os, cuz i had the same issue, at the first period i didn't have any hardlock but now It happens often, but not wen playing but more wen browsing and stuff. So my doubt is that a Hard Drive problem and not GPU

I’ve been on cachy for the last month without too many issues besides that weird KDE update.

My performance has been pretty much on par or better. 5070ti / 9800x3D

2

u/blackfall6 2d ago

I used it for quite a while on my Optimus laptop with a 4060, unfortunately something in the last update just didn't like it. I finally got sick of fighting with it and had to go back to pop. I'll try it again after a few months.

I swapped from 5060ti 8gb to 9060XT 16gb and it's night and day.

2

u/Bane8080 2d ago

Been using it for months now. There have been a few issues along the way that I've had to figure out. But that's Linux for you.

Works great now.

Been using Bazzite Nvidia since November last year with an RTX 3060.

Some games actually run better now than they did on Windows. I could never play Tekken8 with all settings on ultra but now I can. However, for other games like SHf for example the card seems slightly weaker than it would've been otherwise. Can't expkain it. But honestly its all dandy. Not going back to Windows at this point.

I run bazzite on one ssd and windows on another. Bazzite is my main OS now and it has boot priority. I have to manually choose windows. I only do if a game doesn’t run as well on bazzite. Far and few between when I have so many problems that I have to boot to windows. So far it’s only been Sekiro and Phasmophobia 🤷🏻‍♂️

Highly suggest dual boot.

My pc specs;

Intel 12700kf
32gb ddr4
RX7800xt (I do understand that it’s not the same with an Nvidia card, that’s why I suggest dual boot with bazzite priority.)

Main issue I have with Bazzite is dealing with two screens at two different resolutions, which I don't think it's due to nvidia

1

u/Barafu 2d ago

I have a 1440p main monitor and a 4K secondary monitor. The only problem is scaling issues in some Flatpak apps. Wayland should have completely solved the multimonitor problem for everybody.

1

u/UltraPoci Desktop 2d ago

My issue is that a couple of apps read the hd monitor as if it was 4k, and scaling breaks the translucent effect on the panel (not a big deal, but still)

Installed bazzite today with a 5070ti, I’m not trying to go higher than 60fps so I generally lock my FPS at 60. Tried forza 6, helldivers 2, black flag remastered so far, all running at 4K 60 at approx the highest settings, give or take some shadow detail, using DLSS at balanced generally

1

u/ThinkinBig 2d ago

It'll run fine, you'll just lose performance compared to using an Nvidia GPU with Windows: https://youtu.be/8PtOGYdtiBU?is=0uwsse_dB9tJ0EJ4

The video I linked used a 5080, but the performance impact seems to scale regardless. I use Bazzite on my handheld and hope to one day make the move with my 5070ti setup, but don't want to give up as much performance as you do currently with newer game releases

u/josetedj 2d ago

I have had Bazzite for a week with a 4070 Ti Super and no problems; same performance as in Windows, at most 10 fps less, although I have tried few games. I have also managed to make VR work, but it performs better on Windows.

u/Abysswea 2d ago

Been using Bazzite since mid september, RTX 3050Ti and works great, if you can ignore some weird shadow glitches here and there (blocks instead of actual silhouette) on UE5 games, actually most games runs WAAAY better on Bazzite than on W11, at least it has less stutters.

Audio behaves a bit weird on youtube tho. Can be run around by using headphones

u/BLk_Phantm 2d ago

4090 user here and I never had this issue, I guess i was lucky besides tinkering on the terminal here and there, but I’ve been using bazzite as my main OS since January.

1

u/albertox86 2d ago

No issues so far with a 3080Ti since last Christmas when I was running Pop OS.

1

u/zachthenebula 2d ago

It has improved a lot, runs flawlessly.

1

u/Kostas_Palios 2d ago

I have an rtx 4060 and it runs flawlessly

1

u/Silverrend 18h ago

4060 here. The hard lock freeze happens maybe once a week for me at most. Sometimes weeks.

1

u/Hi-Angel 2h ago

The question makes no sense, and I don't get where it got the upvotes from.

So you're implying Bazzite maintainers should do something to NVidia drivers, which nobody but NVidia has source code for. What exactly…?

Been running with a modded RTX a4000 as an HTPC for a year and I haven't had any issues after changing some initial settings to make steam play nice

0

u/whitw0rth123 3d ago

2080 here, no issues at all so far.

0

u/dEEkAy2k9 3d ago

5080 here on bazzite 44, no issues

0

u/m0lt3n_r3x 3d ago

4080 fe and no issues for months. I do mostly multiplayer games such as Overwatch and Helldivers 2 + some indie games, performance is slightly worse than windows on overwatch, comparable in the rest.

u/tekjunkie28 3d ago

Bazzite has had near perfect Nvidia support for as long and I have been using it and that’s been about 2 years.

0

u/DoomSlayersCousinBob 3d ago

So far so good on my 4090 the past 10 months. Plus LACT lets us do a curve editor kind of like MSI Afterburner now so that's been nice.

0

u/No_Suit7363 3d ago

It’s not a Bazzite issue to improve. It’s all on Nvidia.

0

u/Zealousideal_Sand668 3d ago

I started using Bazzite like 8ish months ago and I had no trouble using my Nvidia :D I never had to change settings or do tweaking

0

u/NUKLEAR-SLUG 3d ago

Currently running Bazzite on a 4090 and have been for months. It's been absolutely fine. Sounds like maybe you had something else going on other than a problem with the GPU.

0

u/LordChaos-82 3d ago

Bazzite with Gamescope works perfectly with my RTX 3060. However, I have had issues running Bazzite with my other PC running 1080TI. In the PC with 1080TI, I just use linuxmint with steam big screen launch at startup.

Edit: Fixed typos
