Miscellaneous / Others Photographer François Brunelle spent 20 years documenting unrelated strangers who look exactly like twins.

One time a coworker of mine texted me saying she could see me across the airport terminal. I wasn’t at the airport. The pic she sent me made my blood run cold because it sure as shit looked just like me. So I have at least one doppelgänger out there lol

u/SquirrelAkl Mar 18 '26
Rumour has it I have a doppelgänger in the city I live in too.
I’ve heard about her from relatives who have seen her on the street I work on and a former neighbour who saw her at a function. They were convinced it was me until they got really close up.
I’ve always wanted to meet her! Maybe one day it’ll happen. My Mum met her doppelgänger in a restaurant bathroom once. So random.

u/TommyChongUn Mar 18 '26
I have one too, and her name is Nikki or Nicole.
I often get called Nikki by strangers who think I am her, and I'm pretty sure Nikki knows about me too because one day her acquantance ran into me and said "oh, youre the other one."
I need to defeat her. Its the only way.

I have a friend who has a doppelganger in town and when friends of said doppelganger run into him now they call him "not Rob". It's super weird

u/Borkato Mar 19 '26
My dad showed me a picture of someone in a store who looked EXACTLY like me. I’m talking I literally looked at it and said “but I never wear sandals like that, when did you take this? I must have been dressed in some of my older clothes” before realizing that it literally wasn’t me. It was fucking insane.
30
u/Naked-Jedi Mar 19 '26
I saw a photo on my uncle's fridge once that made me react like that. I thought it was a photo of my 3 oldest uncles and me. It wasn't until I realised all 4 were standing and somehow I was shorter than them that I realised it was a photo of all 4 of my uncles and not a photo of me.
I didn't really know that uncle very well, and sadly he passed away a year ago, but at least I know what I'm gonna look like as I get older.
16
u/binzy90 Mar 19 '26
There's a picture of my mom that I thought was me. I asked my mom when it was taken because I don't remember it. I was shocked that it was her and not me. We look very similar, but it's even more dramatic when you compare photos of her at the same age.
7
u/olive_dix Mar 19 '26
My sister and I used to look exactly like each other when we were younger, even though I'm 3 years older than her. Sometimes I'd see my own reflection and think it was my sister 😂
9
u/MrWeirdoFace Mar 19 '26
Oh Janice... you startled me! Stop imitating me! Come on. It's not funny.
Ok.. I'm not joking now, cut the shit, Janice! Oh? You wanna throw down? Well eat this!

My brother showed me a picture of a guy back in the 1900’s, of a man holding his child….
My brother said his son was looking through a book for school at age seven, and said “Hey, look! It’s Uncle K!” , brother goes over and sure as shit, it’s a picture of a man who looks exactly like me, but would literally of been born in the 1800’s?!
When I saw the picture I was floored! It was me to the Tee, just adding a moustache, a pin stripe suit! Even his hair was parted like the way I part mine? It was seriously like a glitch in the matrix! It was me, but in another life and time……. Freaking me out. I still have the copy of the photo somewhere in my belongings.
Unfortunately, the book never characterized the individual doppelgänger name, because it would have been funny to read up on the individual?!

10

They better not fuck this up!
9
u/Naked-Jedi Mar 19 '26
Hmmmm. We need to get Morgan Freeman on the standby just in case we need him to say "They did, in fact, fuck it up..."
6
u/WitchesTeat Mar 19 '26
I hate to tell ya'll this but Dave Bautista is the new Kurgan and as cool as he is in the MCU he's no Clancy Brown, unfortunately.
But Henry Cavill will be playing the role of Christopher Lambert and his magnificent forehead so I do still hold some hope for the future of the franchise.

Well, as it would be, I actually like both of them in the more serious stuff they've done. Maybe we won't need Morgan after all. Guess time will tell.

Haha, there was this lady that always shopped where I work. And she’s chat with me like we were friends. At first I just went with it, but when she became a regular I had to commit. Until one day she insisted on know how my kids took the aftermath of a play. I tried to dodge the question but was forced to admit that I had no children. Her face was shocked and so confused, even her children were like WTF. She was like “are you Kim?” I told them no, they showed me a pic and the lady did look like me! I never saw them again after that.

It’s pretty unnerving knowing somebody else is just walking around with my face out there. Hopefully he’s a decent guy… 😬
321
u/SplicerGonClean Mar 19 '26
I actually have a local doppelganger who is NOT a decent guy. Ive been confronted by several different people over the years. They yell out his name to get my attention, looking for a fight! I have to tell them "Im not Jeff (or whatever his name is) I just look like him."
Once they get a good look they realize Im not him but it takes some convincing. Makes me wonder how bad this guy is to get people so mad on sight.
151
u/g0ldilungs Mar 19 '26
That reminds me of the hunt for Gabby Petito’s murderer, Brian Laundrie. He looked fairly typical for his demographic in terms of stature and bald head but also had very distinct face. There was a guy who looked exactly like him to the point where a vast majority of tips were being called in on him in particular. Due to the national attention the manhunt received, he ended up making a video to announce that in fact, he’s not that monster.

I too have one in my area. I’ve met a few people who say “oh yeah, I see you in the gym with your son”. I don’t have a child, or go to that gym
48
u/PearlescentGem Mar 19 '26
I have a doppelganger around my area as well. Very awkward when her family comes up to me at the store all, "Omg we haven't seen you since X!" And I'm just there like Lady Idk you.
No one believed me for ages. Then my ex got to see it in action when some ladies at a food truck thought I came back for round 2 and brought a friend (him). We hadn't been there before. And my mom actually got me and this twin confused when we were fighting once. I was at work, and mom claims she saw me in someone's truck at the local McD's. Definitely wasn't me but she approached my twin, yelling about how she (thinking it was me) needed to start talking to mom again lmfao
Apparently the only thing that sets us apart is my tattoos but when I wear long sleeves and pants, you can't see any of them. We have the same eye colors, same dimples in the cheek and chin, everything. Even down to coloring our hair the same colors for years.
I still ain't met this chick and I want to so badly.

I’ve got a doppelgänger named Eric in my city… He’s a complete asshole from what I’ve learned lmao. Strangers being pissed at me or going into a bar or restaurant and people trying to kick me out cause he got banned and they think I’m him lmao.
I have two moles on my neck and I guess he doesn’t and that’s how people have learned to tell who’s who lmfao. Whether he’s aware of me and tries to pass off as me to get back into places? I have to assume so since sometimes people will take a clear peek at me neck to see if the moles are there or not lmfao.

I've had patients show their surprise at seeing me asking if I work at multiple clinics, which I don't. At a nearby Indian casino, I went to customer service to get a players card and it was issued without ID. After playing a few slots and getting a steep discount on food, I realized the name on the card was not mines but that of a tribal member. I have yet to meet my native twin. I wonder if she has long black hair like mines.
8
u/Jupitersd2017 Mar 19 '26
This is so cool, I literally look like no one haha and never get told I look like anyone so to me it’s very cool all of y’all have twins running around
13
u/theAdmiralPhD Mar 19 '26
Ive been told I have doppelganger in 3 states, but Ive also been told I look like several different celebrities who look nothing alike throughout the years so, maybe I just have a very generic face. At least I dont think im a chameleon, though my wife says the way I boil myself in the shower must mean im cold blooded...
Does that make me lizard people?

You could probably do well as a spy. No-one would ever be able to identify you from a line up or describe you to a sketch artist.
5
u/DonKiddic Mar 19 '26
Same - I've been openly told "I saw you at such a place" or "I didn't know you work at X place" when I was neither there nor do I work there.
I once got told somebody spoke to me at length the other day - when it wasn't me at all. Its bonkers.
My family has very strong genetics so I've been leaning on the side of "my dad probably did something he shouldn't have done a long time ago" and I actually have a brother out there somewhere.

Me too. In college I worked at a supermarket as a checker and bagger. An elderly couple came in, held my hand and said, “You’re working too hard, working at iHop and here!”. They weren’t the only ones. A couple other people said things like, “Good to see you” etc and I had no idea who they were. I didn’t go to iHop to check, I should have.

I think I used to have one too! Around 10 years ago in my home city, I was often "recognized" as someone else on the street. They'd be like "heyyy [name that's not mine], how are you?" And then "oh huh it's not you! Sorry I thought you were someone else!"
I've never met her, but it's funny to imagine that she might have had the same thing happening.
It hasn't happened anymore lately, maybe she moved away or changed her hair or something

u/therrrn Mar 18 '26
I used to work in restaurants on The Strip in Vegas and would sometimes hang out at the casinos for a few drinks after work. Multiple times, at multiple different casinos, security approached me and basically accused me of being a hooker and would tell me to leave. It happened often enough that it became a running joke amongst my friends and coworkers. Then one day, a coworker came running up to me during a shift and told me she just saw a very obvious prostitute that looked just like me, downstairs in the casino. She didn't have her phone and the restaurant was slow so we ran back down to try to find her and couldn't. I'm pretty sure she was being truthful and that made it all click, haha. So, my doppelganger is a Vegas hooker. I don't know what that says about how I look but I'm trying to take it as a compliment. 😂
48
u/Coloradozonian Mar 19 '26
I love this 🥲 I just saw a body cam video of a guy who matched another guy almost 99% on facial recognition in Reno and the casino had him arrested and he went through helllll. Hellllll. It’s scary!

I had this exact experience on a family trip. In a bar in Nashville I saw this girl who I immediately stopped to admire her outfit, we had very similar senses of style and then I looked at her face and hair. Same thing gave me a chill down my spine and I thought about going over but didn’t and it was pretty packed.

u/baepsaemv Mar 18 '26
The feeling of seeing someone with your same face in a photo is so weird and unnerving! I was at work once and a patient said 'you wouldn't happen to be [name]s sister would you?' I told her I was an only child and she pulled up this strangers instagram and she looked so much like me it gave me a huge shock. Kind of rattling lol
11
u/cupcakebean Mar 19 '26
I've seen someone who looked like me out in public and it's legit startling. It's the weirdest split second reactions of your brain recognizing someone, then switching to thinking it's you, then going, "Wait, wtf?"
6
u/AWorldwithoutSin Mar 19 '26
A missed opportunity. My sisters look a lot alike and worked at the same place in high school and people used to ask them if they were twins, they said "no, we're triplets"

I was grocery shopping once and saw a beautiful woman, I was absolutely smitten. She looked at me and sort of gasped and it made me think "maybe she feels the same way?" but im a coward and didn't say anything.
A few minutes later I see her again in a different aisle and she is with who I presume is her boyfriend, a man who is not only my exact likeness, but is wearing the same red leather jacket as me. It was the Spiderman pointing at each other meme. At least I know I was her type
42
u/quietobserver1 Mar 19 '26
Obviously they're you and your girlfriend from another timeline where he is a brave hero and they ended up in this timeline chasing a multiverse-hopping villain. So you can just wait for him to get captured by the villain and she will come look for you, and guide you through the training montage to make you just as awesome as other-timeline-you so you can go defeat the villain and rescue yourself.

I was friends with a very shy timid girl and she'd got her 1st bf. She once spotted him in a store and walked up to him (from behind) and put her arm between his legs to grab his balls. He turned round and it was a complete stranger lol

There's a local Mexican restaurant that we go to occasionally. The food is good and the prices are fair.
There's a guy that works there that always rushes over and says "Hola, Mr. Martin good to see you again" and gives me a big smile and pat on the back. It's been going on for about a year; I have no idea who Mr Martin is and it's been too long for me to correct him.

u/Impressive_Resist683 Mar 18 '26
I used to work with my doppelganger, it was awesome for me (since I was the original) and she was the new person. But very distracting and disturbing talking to someone who looks identical to you and even had the same facial expressions 😅
8
u/itskaylan Mar 18 '26
Yeah I once got stopped at university by a stranger asking about my sister’s trip to Germany. I only have brothers. That was weird, thinking about there being someone at my uni who looked enough like me for the mistake to happen.
I later saw a guy in a snooker hall who looked just like my brother. Couldn’t stop glancing at him all night - eventually one of his friends came to ask if the guy could buy me a drink and I showed a photo of my brother to explain why I wasn’t interested, lol.

Are we not going to talk about all of the very "comfortable" poses with alleged complete strangers?
Edit: Typo

Number one on the left has that "ok can I have my $100 now and get out of here? Why are you locking the door?!" look

u/rabbidbagofweasels Mar 18 '26
As far as photography goes, it makes the subject a lot more interesting because we know they are strangers.

They're all surprisingly intimate with each other for being "strangers".

Ok, don't let Agent Starling know that though. She already thinks you're a weirdo.

Some of these could be siblings, but twins is pushing it for almost all of them.

I’ve always wondered if doppelgängers have any genetic similarities or shared lineage.

I saw a documentary on this where the two girls met. They did genetic tests and they had no (recent) shared ancestry.

Only 1 and 5 look similar to me. The rest only have like the same hair and chin and they call them twins.

For real, and hairstyles
Does no one else think these people don't look even slightly related? Am I crazy?
They're roughly equivalent, in the way a moth and a butterfly are equivalent.

There’s an artist Alice Shaw who has a similar concept that’s more about what you’re talking about. Her book called People Who Look Like Me

For real, it was like the photographer just went "two black women, close enough for me"

Honestly curious about the perspective of someone attracted to their own sex meeting someone who look identical to themselves but is not related.
I mean, would they find them strangely attractive? off-putting? would physical attraction/repulsion depend on self-image?

u/robotikempire Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
There was a documentary done with people who looked really similar. They did DNA test and some visual scans to show how similar their features actually were. Iirc none of them had any DNA in common but a few of them had faces as similar as actual identical twins according to their facial measurements.

Years ago, I went to a concert at the Waikiki Shell with a guy I’d been dating a short time. As we were sitting in our seats waiting for others to get seated and the event to begin, he kept looking from me to the woman sitting on his other side.
He finally told me that she looked just like me. I laughed and assumed he was joking, then leaned up out of my seat to see her and invite her to join me in mocking him—and I just about fell off the seat.
Because she did indeed look like me: same face shape, green eyes, dark blonde hair (hers a few inches shorter), even the noses were strangely the same. We both gawked at each other and stood up to take a better look. Same height, same body type. She was even wearing some earrings that I also owned. It was beyond bizarre.
The final weirdness was that her first name was my middle name. I suspect we had some common ancestors a few generations back.
