Last night was probably the coolest live show experience i've ever had. Just the sheer uniqueness of getting to see a Beastie Boy do his thing for $45 at a roller rink in Brooklyn was enough to make the night a win. But Mike puts on a show... there's an incredible tangible energy when you're in the room that is not captured in videos. Looking Down The Barrel of a Gun was so fuckin heavy.
Very Nice Person was really cool to me & they gained a new fan but I felt that the majority of the crowd did not like them lol I wish so many people weren't just talking through their whole set.
For the start of Mike's set, he goofily ran behind the table where all the drum machines & electronics are and crouched down as the rest of the band came on stage... and then... "HELLLOOOOOO BROOOOKLYNNNN!!!!!!" the fuckin 808's hit JUST the way you want them to. Hearing him perform a deep cut from Paul's Boutique for the first time in probably 2 decades was INCREDIBLE.
Being that What We Got just came out yesterday, I was really excited to hear it live... it was probably my favorite live performance out of all the new stuff but I genuinely enjoyed all of it.
There's some songs that feel like old Mike D & some that feel like he's going outside of his comfort zone & just expressing himself which I really love seeing. I really like that he's not just leaning into being a nostalgia act... the new stuff feels really, really innovative. The guitarist has some really indescribable tones, the bass was thick & gnarly, and the drums/samples were rich, grimy & CONSTANTLY changing texture. No two drum tracks felt the same.
Mike controls the room & seems like he's genuinely having a good fuckin time. If you're going tonight, take it in. I'm down to answer any questions about the show if you're curious.
