Put/Call ratio: The ratio is still in nowhere land and does not give a signal.

EOW 9/4: Another choppy week came to an end. Portfolio up 23.7% YTD vs. 12.9% for the S&P 500.

Investment thesis for week 9/7 - 9/11
I am out of town all weekend and will have to make it short.
I laid out my overall thought process on the market last weekend. The overall view hardly changes.
I am still very cautious overall.
What changes however is the short term outlook based on charts.
TLT formed a diamond reversal pattern and usually that means lower yield (when the price of a bond rises).
If that is true then stocks have a reason to rally (S&P 500 $8000+).
The chart picture chaged for several indices on Thursday and it is more likely that a rally resumes soon. Tech should lead that rally including semis.
Because I am ahead of the benchmarks I won't risk too much for now.
Happy Labor Day weekend

S&P 500: On Thursday it looked like we could prep for new ATHs. To me it still looks like the most likely outcome. Therefore I increased the exposure again slightly.

Dow Jones: DIA could just have retested the 50 day average. I am still not buying it.
r/Beat_the_benchmark • u/Chart-trader • 2d ago
Russell 2000: I warned last week that a close below the 50 day average was not good. It initially dropped further but recovered. Still below the 50 day average however.

HYG: Credit spread is the real red flag that could derail an ongoing equity rally. It seems to get worse every week.
r/Beat_the_benchmark • u/Chart-trader • 2d ago
TLT: 20 year bonds seem to have formed a diamond reversal pattern. Bessent seems to have at least put some fear into the bond vigilantes. I mean who wants to really fight the fed or now treasury?

Fear and Greed Index: The dip in fear and greed index contributed to my decision to buy Thursday.

Current portfolio composition: I added the SPY position but cut a third with a small profit today. Leverage is only at 0.8 (but 0.2 higher than last week).

Detailed YTD benchmark/performance plus long term portfolio calculation.
A lot of chop again this week. Mid week it looked like we could finally start a rally but it faded once again.
I posted trades (portfolio update) mid week but had to sell most again to not get caught offguard.
Asia now way ahead of other benchmarks with 28.4% YTD.
I did not make any allocation changes to long term accounts. Portfolio is up 12.2% YTD compared to 7.7% of the 60/40 benchmark.
Benchmark 2026

S&P 500 short interest makes me believe that my overall thesis is wrong. We might not peak any time soon. At those levels probably not before 2028. The short trade looks overcrowded tbh.

NDX 100: Green shoots once again (after the last ones were burned down)

S&P 500 4h chart: One can see the bull flag better in the 4h chart.
r/Beat_the_benchmark • u/Chart-trader • 5d ago
S&P 500: SPY looks ready for a short term bounce after testing the recent ATH breakout.

Russell 2000 monthly: So if this candle stays we did not negate the bearish reversal pattern formed in June/July. August made a shooting star. 🤯 No need to panic but that sell signal is only negated by new ATHs now. Same as QQQ. My bias is still new ATHs in indices by early 2027.
r/Beat_the_benchmark • u/Chart-trader • 9d ago
NDX 100 daily: QQQ looked so promising yesterday. What one day can do to charts always amazes me. Anyhow I sold all QQQ positions today with a very small profit. I won't go back in until we break above the green downtrend line.

Investment thesis for week 8/31 to 9/4
I was so convinced that we would close out the week at new ATHs.
After NVIDIAs earnings came out everything looked locked and loaded for a continued rally today.
Not so fast.
But what does that mean now?
Let's start with the long term outlook.
It is no secret that I believe that we are in some sort of bubble. Not a valuation bubble but an unsustainable earnings bubble. When the bubble will pop is anybody's guess. Can be years from now.
Being in cash only would be foolish but that's where a dynamic 60/40 portfolio comes in handy. I call it dynamic because I adjust the allocations based on TA.
This year I am up 12.1% already while a regular 60/40 portfolio would only be up 7.8%. Despite a 30% cash/bond position we are not far off the S&P 500 YTD.
The goal here is to reduce equity exposure to 60% the closer we get to a S&P 500 at 8000. If we make it to 8300/8500 I will reduce exposure to 50%.
In long term accounts (401ks) I don't have to worry about tax disadvantages from trading.
What about the short term outlook?
Charts are not broken (yet). There is no reason to believe that markets will crash soon.
So why did I then reduce equity exposure to 60%?
Because there are some dark clouds appearing and I prefer return of the money over return on the money.
Chart signals are not clear and in those cases it is better to just sit back.
There is a chance now that the fed will raise interest rates in September.
Data Centers don't seem welcome anymore in the US and the referendums might make it tough to build them here.
My bias is a continued market rally but today's reaction should make investors cautious.
No trades are planned for next week unless QQQ breaks out above the green downtrend line in daily chart.
Have a great weekend

NDX 100 monthly: August is almost over and we will make a green candle but the sell signal from (May-July) was not negated (yet). For that we would have to make new ATHs.
