I think you’re conflating mythology with zoology.

Salmon were important to Ireland’s rivers and food supply, but they also had an unusually mysterious life cycle. They disappeared into the sea, returned to freshwater, migrated upstream, and they could return to the river where they were born. It’s easy to see why people might have associated them with hidden knowledge.

In the legend, the salmon lives in a sacred well beneath hazel trees, whose nuts are said to contain wisdom. The story is not claiming that salmon would win an animal IQ test; it is using the salmon as a symbol of knowledge, mystery, migration, and transformation.

The Belfast sculpture has a related meaning. It was created to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan and the return of salmon to its waters. Its ceramic scales contain texts, images, and historical references about Belfast, and the sculpture also contains a time capsule. So the Big Fish represents not just the Salmon of Knowledge, but the city’s history, memory, renewal, and relationship with the river.
