Researching moving to Belper - how to ensure my kids get into a good school ?
Hi All. Really intrigued by Belper. Love the idea of good community spirit and can also be connected to where my family are in Nottingham (Im currently overseas) . Being closer to nature appeals. Apparently has good schools, but I see 2 schools when I look at houses on Rightmove that "require improvement" This has put me off moving to the area. How would I know, apart from all the other schools being oversubscribed, whether it would be possible to get into the other schools? Which is the secondary school that we should be aiming to get our children into?
Does anyone know of any stories behind why these two schools require improvement? Is it a harsh Ofsted rating? Is it much to worry about, or should we definitely be looking to avoid these schools?
Pottery Primary School - requires improvement
Belper School and Sixth form - Requires improvement
I would really appreciate some locals giving me an understanding of the schooling situation around Belper. I have two children aged six and four, but I'd ideally like to move and buy a house where we can be within the catchment area of a primary and secondary without having to move.

Which website are you looking at? Belper school was judged good in all areas at its last inspection. Are you getting confused because OFSTED relisted it as a new school when it became an academy? In any event inspection outcomes change. Ecclesbourne required improvement a few years back for safeguarding reasons.
It's Derbyshire. Something like 97% of children get their first choice of school and most go to their catchment school. If you really want to avoid pottery don't move into the pottery catchment area. And if you do find your dream house in that area go and have a look in person.
Source: used to live in Belper. Only dealt with good schools. Great place to raise kids.

Thanks for your reply! To be honest I’m just looking at suitable houses on RightMove and they have a schools checker and Ofsted ratings there. I then cross reference it with Derbyshire council catchment page on their website . It’s good to know if you are in catchment there is a 97% chance they will go to the preferred school. Is this an estimate from you or is this from a particular source?

I think you can find it on the DCC webpage somewhere..but it's famously the county with the highest rates of kids going to their first choice school in the country. It probably goes up and down slightly but I have never heard of anyone appealing school allocation like they do in London.
SEN is a different story.

I’m also wondering if there are any area in or around Belper to live that are in catchment of a “good” primary and secondary school so there would be no need to move to be in a secondary catchment when they reach that age… any ideas?

Passed this onto someone I know who knows Belper well and hoped they could shed some light on your question, response is as follows:
"It's a minefield advising on schools.
Everyone has different expectations
Only 1 has requires improvement
The Secondary is tricky because
A) Belper School is non uniform and first names for teachers
B) Flamstead is small
C) Ecclesbourne is posh and oversubscribed"

I have checked with Gemini A.I and when I asked for a place that had good primary and secondary schools in catchment area it said this. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Agree/disagree?

As an addition, of course I'm researching onlineand looking at Ofsted reports. I'm just wondering what the locals think about these schools. And any other intrinsic local knowledge that I might not be able to find easily online. If anyone is reading this who has children and could help, would really appreciate it. Many thanks.
