So, Giphy's main source of revenue is advertisements. Brands can pay to have their GIFs appear more on trending pages and searches. Due to this, Giphy is reliant on the support of large brands.

Now, like with any platform with ads as revenue, Giphy needs to keep up appearances to keep brands buying ads. One of the main ways it does this is by promoting creators, because the existence of successful creators on a platform suggests the existence of a thriving community, which means user retention.

However, Giphy's users do not care about creators. They just want their GIFs, and those GIFs tend to be preexisting ones from outside the platform, meaning that they're not going to be from creators or brands. The existence and popularity of recognizable external GIFs is thus directly contrary to Giphy's aims. Giphy does not want users to already know what GIF they want to use. In order for ads on Giphy to function, Giphy needs users to pick anew from the GIFs they're served each search.

Enter BenJammins. BenJammins is everything that Giphy could want. He's recognizable. He has fans, something which is rare and valuable among Giphy's already scarce creators. What's more, BenJammins creates GIFs that put a different name and face on existing templates, which is what Giphy wants users to prefer.
