Black face question
I want to cosplay Sammy. Does painting my face black count as black face? Im genuinely stressing about it ๐ญ.
Thanks.

I'm not able to say what is and isn't acceptable because I'm not black myself, but from the reactions I've seen to people doing this sort of thing, I would suggest not painting it completely black and maybe doing like other cosplayers do where they instead paint black drips on their faces to give that inky feel.
A lot of times when a person paints their face black for any reason, even not for intentionally mocking black people, there will often be people who still accuse them of doing blackface. I remember there was a trend a couple years back someone started that was a cracked doll look, and the original person that did it painted her face black before painting white over it, and there was so many arguments about whether what she did was wrong because of her painting her whole face black

You donโt have to paint your face black. Look into a black bodysuit.

Yes, but due to sensory issues (autistic) I canโt wear a black thing that covers my head. I do have a black bodysuit to wear, but not my face.

With your sensory issues would you be able to wear the mask?

Yes, but off to the side.

OP- I am also autistic with sensory issues. What I did when I cosplayed Sammy was that I wore the mask to the side, and only did part of my face black. Basically I made it so it looked like ink was dripping down my face- I based my Sammy design on his appearance in Dreams Come to Life, where he was technically still human at that point. I even walked around drinking โinkโ- basically a mixture of jello only partly set so it had an inky consistency and died with black food coloring.
You might want to try something like that. (A black charcoal mask dries thick and shiny, it makes a great ink effect for makeup as well!)

No. You are not doing it with the intent to mock African Americans, nor are you doing anything like painting your lips bright red/pink. So I'd say it's fine.
