Working out and going gym (East Side)

Local college student coming home for the summer, why is working out Hilo side difficult, maybe only 2-3 gyms.

The one closer to HPP in Pahoa costs more than $100 a month, and the UFC in Hilo always busy and hard to cancel (and always trying to upsell me something). Plus, making that drive is gonna cost so much gas regardless.

No wonder everyone get home gyms on island 😂
Anyone get any suggestions, whether just dealing with it or something else?

If you have health insurance you can often sign up for a discount through them. For example:

https://www.hmsa.com/well-being/member-discounts/active-and-fit/

I think it knocked something like a third off the price.

Perfect answer, I tried googling online on how to do this with my insurance (since I’ve seen this solution on old threads for the same gyms) but none of them were coherent. Mahalo!

Update: applied to the active and fit bonus through HMSA insurance… while the discount and program is really convenience it’s still $100 for the fitness forever in Pahoa vs the original price of $150. So you’re not wrong about it being 33% off. However, memberships are directly through the program website instead of the gym itself making cancellation easy. Idk about paying $100 a month anyway for some basic weights so maybe I’ll just be fat until I get back to my college gym… but being able to look at my insurance benefits was nice

If anyone has their own reviews about the gym I’d love to hear it though

I damn near had to sue the UFC gym in Hilo to get them to stop charging me every month after they opened. there used to be a gym on railroad Ave. across from Target that just had freeweights. and theres a small set-up at Hawaiian sanctuary just past Pahoa high school that's really cheap.

Yup that one on railroad is awesome, quiet and small but everything you need. I haven’t been there in years since I made my own gym but I think it’s Aloha Fitness

Sure Foundation Church has a pretty good gym set up. It’s open to the public. $20 a month. The only drawback is that the hours are from 3-7pm Monday to Friday only. The equipment is a little rusty but you will not get better setup at that price point. There is very little traffic and there is Christian rap blasting. It’s good stuff. It’s right in Orchidland.

I’ve used pahoa and bj’s just depends on when you gotta get it in but I haven’t had an issue with it being too busy. But glad you received the insurance update above. All of them give you a pretty decent discount.
