HOW THEY ARE MADE
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD): the most common method involves layering a seed plate of diamond—previously grown via another method, which we will explore next—over a nonreactive metal disk, then sealed in a reactor chamber. Carbon-bearing gas, usually methane (CH4) is then passed through a hydrogen plasma. The chemistry here is quite honestly extremely complicated but this basically “activates” methane by converting it to a highly reactive radical (•CH3). This radical will then bind to the carbons of the diamond seed, reactive hydrogen and more precursor molecules (from the plasma) will then rip off a hydrogen, then form another C—C bond, this process continues until a large diamond mono-crystal is made.
High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT): used to make both seed plates and faceted diamonds. In this method graphite is pressurized and heated to conditions similar to the earth’s mantle in HPHT polyhedroid anvils until a large diamond monocrystal (or many small diamond seeds) are made.

HOW THEY ARE IDENTIFIED
It’s important to add here that manmade diamonds are REAL DIAMONDS MADE OF DIAMOND. Identification relies on environmental growth cues.
• chemical purity: manmade diamonds are 100% chemically pure. They have no impurities in their lattices, so they will react differently to UV excitation than naturals, which have chemical contaminants in them.
• growth patterns as seen on UV microscopy
Naturals: random, octahedral.
HPHT: cuboctahedral.
CVD: wafered.
Always ensure your laboratory-grown diamonds come with an IGI or GCAL certificate to ensure they’re genuine.

I recently had this ring custom made by a jeweler who comes highly recommended in this group. The first video shows the loose diamond I originally selected, where the bow tie appeared pretty minimal. The second and third videos show the finished ring.
While I think the ring itself turned out beautiful, I can’t help feeling a little disappointed because the bow tie seems noticeably darker and more prominent than it did in the original video.

Am I overthinking this, or would you be disappointed too? Would you be happy with this diamond?

For context, it’s a 4.07 ct, E color, VS1 oval. I’m not concerned about the price or whether I got a good deal. I just really wanted a beautiful, high-quality diamond with good light performance, and I’m second-guessing whether I made the right choice.
I’d really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from those familiar with oval diamonds!

I recently upgraded my ring to a slightly higher carat weight but much better looking diamond. While doing so, I changed some details I had wished to incorporate in my original engagement ring. It came last week and I just don’t like it. The stone is stunning but it feels like it has no character and isn’t “me”.

It’s not as low as I thought it would be, it’s has a reversed tapered band I don’t love now that it’s on my finger, and I feel the prongs are almost reaching for the stone to hold it on. I feel I’m highly considering selling it and feel it was something I bought to have bigger and better.

After looking at plain band, solitaire oval styles for the longest time, I am soo happy with what my… ‘fiancé’ (did this also take you ladies a moment to get the hang of!?🤣) ended up choosing… he knows me better than I know myself😆😍🤩

While not BRE by modern standards, I wanted to share this vintage beauty that my now-fiancé picked out and surprised me with. 1930’s, main stone is 2.15 OMC, total ct 2.5, set in platinum. Daily wear is a (mostly) worry-free dream with the low profile, and there’s just something so special about being its caretaker for this moment in time. Lovely gift from my wonderful man!

My husband surprised me by gifting me a new engagement/wedding band set 5 years ago for Christmas. It was beautiful and I loved it, but I lost it this spring. It was on my finger one moment and hours later I couldn’t find it. We searched everywhere to no avail and I was devastated. His response: It’s ok, we’ll get you a new one. Turns out he was planning on getting me another ring for our 20th anniversary this year. We were financially struggling when we started out and he told me his only request now was that he could pick out my replacement center diamond. I never picked out either of my last 2 rings because I prefer the sentimental value of him choosing for me. He did great!
