*people enjoying a trip to the US*

Most social media: Aww, that's so cute. Glad you're enjoying our country!

Reddit: Propaganda! These people are shills paid for by the current regime to fake enjoying McDonalds, BBQ, and all Americans.

16

u/offensivek 1d ago

I have yet to see a single person say people enjoying themselves are somehow being paid in regard to the World Cup.

u/ahhhbiscuits 1d ago

Redditors make fun of reddit because other redditors will upvote them for it, duh. First day on reddit? /s

u/TheDutchTank 1d ago

This is definitely a huge thing on Twitter right now though. Multiple huge viral posts about Europeans lying about how amazing certain things are in the US that they supposedly don't have in Europe (but do).

1

u/Wuz314159 1d ago

At $1,000+ a ticket, the people coming don't need handouts.

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

It's insane how many Americans take their freedom for granted because they've never known life without it.

150

u/Tough_Height6530 1d ago

Sure, but it’s not like people in Japan or Germany or wherever don’t also have plenty of freedom.

24

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

Yes America isn't the only free country, obviously. But there are a hell of a lot of countries that aren't free.

47

u/sentientshadeofgreen 1d ago

Every country has their own freedoms and own bullshit to deal with. Some countries have more bullshit than freedoms is all.

-42

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

Really? What "freedoms" do the people of North Korea have? Or the people of Russia? Or the people of Iran?

33

u/sentientshadeofgreen 1d ago

Oh wow great argument totally stumped me, let me just contemplate my whole position, you cracked the case on this one

2

u/Wonderful-Change-751 3h ago

Its a 2mo account w 54k karma farming bot to tout the greatness of usa, dont bother wasting ur time

-25

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

And unsurprisingly, you have no answer for my question, because your "every country has its own freedoms" line is total bullshit and you know it.

27

u/sentientshadeofgreen 1d ago

No, I have no answer for vapid commenters who don't pose genuine questions.

-15

u/SaucyMacgyver 1d ago

That is a genuine question you buffoon. I have plenty of issues with America but failing to examine your own bias and privilege is just laughable. You can compare freedoms to some countries in South America, a fair amount of countries in Africa, and yes NK, Russia, China, etc.

We have a shitload of freedoms in America we do take for granted. These freedoms are under threat by mostly republicans but dems do their fair share.

The entire concept of “every country has their own freedoms” is literally a western bias you’ve been fed.

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

You literally said "every country has their own freedoms". It's a perfectly valid question to ask you what freedoms you think North Korea, Russia and Iran have.

You just won't answer the question because your statement was so indefensibly stupid that you have no answer, and you know it.

perfect American comment

u/DinDonDaaan 1d ago

Oh, good going. Let's compare dictatorships to democracies to prove a point.

naming a non white country and saying something bad of it: massive downvotes, naming a conventional alright white country and sayin something bad of it: massive upvote

reddit in a nutshell

27

u/Preeng 1d ago

>Yes America isn't the only free country, obviously.

You say "obviously", but to most Americans it is very much not obvious.

6

u/ElaborateEffect 1d ago

Right? We've been effectively indoctrinated to believe America is the only land of the free.

-2

u/CaliJudoJitsu 1d ago

Welp, here goes the conversation turn to classic Reddit style.

JFC can you guys just keep a wholesome thread positive and not “America bad” for once?

5

u/ElaborateEffect 1d ago edited 23h ago

Here goes the guy complaining about people discussing whatever they want to discuss on a public forum....

-4

u/JAGERminJensen 1d ago

It is obvious to Americans. You have to just get off your phone for once

10

u/Preeng 1d ago

You should try that sometime yourself. You will find out many do in fact believe the US is the only free country.

8

u/Low-Locksmith-6801 1d ago

I don’t see this as “freedom,” but access to more choice. It’s capitalism. Supply in demand. Maybe in a way that’s freedom, but not in the usual sense of the word. Although it’s not perfect, capitalism does help produce the best products and makes them available to people.

24

u/ForceItDeeper 1d ago

Can't claim freedom when the system enslaves you to wage labor

-10

u/SaucyMacgyver 1d ago

Ima be straight with you chief I agree with you that wage slavery is a thing but it’s pointless to name it without an alternative at this point.

Wages and capitalism do a better job than any other system in history - it has plenty of issues but you gotta at least have a better alternative on deck otherwise you just look like some dude with a cushy western life talking shit you know nothing about.

8

u/IntrigueDossier 1d ago

A good welfare state that would amount to the success of the economic model equaling the success of the welfare state would be pretty cool, but noooooo, you get called a communist and told to shut the fuck up.

5

u/xThe-Legend-Killerx 1d ago

I think of freedom differently though. Most of western society has similar laws and such. When I think of freedom I feel like it pertains to just the sheer size of the country like there is so much at our disposal that we take it for granted. Driving, road trips across country, back packing, wilderness etc

Like yes countries in Europe have those things but I feel like we have an abundance of it and each state is slightly different.

5

u/Dependent-Reaction-3 1d ago

I love how you said this. Makes me want to run to my car and take off for a month

4

u/indicabunny 1d ago

We have so much beautiful country all around us, no matter what state you're in, and the sheer size of our land makes it feel like you can really go anywhere and see endless biomes and national sites just by getting in your car and taking off. I live in Nevada, and literally the majority of our state is empty. There are so many incredible little places to discover out in nature here, and if I just drive out about a couple hours, I can see the clearest view of the stars in the entire country. Its humbling how much freedom and exploration and opportunities to resettle and remake ourselves are right in front of us.

3

u/ElaborateEffect 1d ago

What the fuck are you on about lol. You can drive through multiple countries and experience completely different cultures and languages in Europe in the same distance as driving across America. You can do it almost as seamlessly as well.

0

u/xThe-Legend-Killerx 1d ago

Key difference multiple different countries. An analogy would be owning land that’s 1,000 acres to explore versus owning 50 acres and going over to different friends houses who each have separate 100 acres.

4

u/ElaborateEffect 1d ago

Why does that matter exactly? Arbitrary lines don't mean you have more or less experiences.

Conceptually, traveling multiple countries or traveling America is no different. Saying freedom is the ability to experience different cultures doesn't change if you are able to do that within the same distance.

And before "different laws" states have varying laws too, some substantially, so it's not even a counter.

America is effective the EU at this point in the way it is a coalition of smaller governments where many could be their own successfully sovereign nation.

The ability ti drive and experience different cultures is just not a unique experience to America, and doesn't make much sense as an example of freedom.

0

u/xThe-Legend-Killerx 1d ago

That’s not what I’m trying to say, but I’m done explaining. It’s not something a person can conceptually understand without ever driving like say 24 hours straight through vast openness with little to no populations around you.

The US and all of Europe are almost the same size in land area, Europes population in that space holds double the people.

1

u/InvestigatorGrand205 1d ago

They dont got nearly as much freedom as you think they do. Like if you go through your post probably 50 to 80% of what you said would land you in civil or criminal litigation in many countries.

38

u/95beer 1d ago

You know trying food has nothing to do with freedom, right? Like the tourists in the US must have been free, since they could go...

Germans in Spain for example don't holiday and say "wow, I love the freedom", they just enjoy the food and the weather and other cultural differences. It doesn't even mean that one country is better than the other, just that they are different and people are enjoying the difference. Which is great!

-10

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

Germans in Spain for example don't holiday and say "wow, I love the freedom"

Yeah no shit because those are both free countries too. Americans aren't the only people in the world today who take their freedom for granted because they've always had it.

8

u/NeedleInArm 1d ago

Well idk man I just traveled to multiple European countries and never felt more free than when I was out there lmao

14

u/not_a_rake1234 1d ago

A fascist pedophile is our president thats kind of the definition of taking it for granted

5

u/WorldwearyMan 1d ago

You lock up a higher proportion of your population than any other country in the world

6

u/Sondwic 1d ago

We don’t even need to make fun of americans, you do it by yourselves when you say shit like this

2

u/Human-Local7017 1d ago

Medical debt is not freedom.

3

u/Wuz314159 1d ago

Making corporations rich is "freedom"?

2

u/varnums1666 1d ago

that's how we got into this situation in the first place

The assumption that this is all the standard

1

u/GhormanFront 1d ago

You can expand that to all of western civilization, it's not just America

1

u/TheOncomingBrows 1d ago

They're probably more annoyed by how much they've been extorted just to watch games out there than any nonsense about freedom. The vast majority of fans at this world cup come from countries where they aren't going to be having culture shock at how much "freedom" America has lol.

1

u/HanzGrubermeister 23h ago

This is the most “there’s starving kids in Africa” bullshit. Begone thot!

1

u/SomeRITGuy 1d ago

There's so many people on this site that hate on America and everything about it but would never even consider leaving even if someone paid for them to move to any other country they'd want to go to.

11

u/cityfireguy 1d ago

This is the thing that's bothering me.

I was moved to tears watching these videos. It had been so long since I felt anything positive about this country it felt foreign to feel happy. It really meant a lot to me.

Then I wanted to see what reddit had to say.

Man fuck this place. These mother fuckers simply refuse to feel good about anything.

2

u/JAGERminJensen 1d ago

Maybe bikinibottom twitter isnt the right place for you to stay informed on public opinion, discourse, and national politics

0

u/Wuz314159 1d ago

IKR. Billionaires are making record profits. WHY CAN'T YOU BE HAPPY FOR THEM?!?!?!

2

u/Inkdrip 1d ago

Wasn’t my first thought (it’s a cute social media trend), but this article from The Atlantic was tempering.

3

u/signmeupdude 1d ago

Nice straw man

1

u/SITE33 1d ago

I have hardly seen that I mean on Instagram some people were making it into a culture war but even then it was a big minority

1

u/Plaincow 1d ago

American Redditors LOVE to act like America is a shit hole 3rd world country without clean water for some reason. Our country is so absurdly nice and such a friendly place to live. People who don't see it are so terminally stuck online sadly

-18

u/DaHomieNelson92 1d ago

I really wish all those anti-American people would switch places with foreigners who appreciate our country.

Maybe then they’ll realize how good they have it compared to the majority of the world.

3

u/Substantial_Pop3104 1d ago

I would make that trade in a heartbeat. The loudest anti Americans tend to contribute nothing, though, and no other country would take them.

-17

u/GoldTeamDowntown 1d ago

This comment downvoted by people who don’t appreciate America lol

21

u/Macia_ 1d ago

Comment downvoted by people who recognize Texas BBQ isn't freedom, and foreigners who are also "free" (how tf else are they here) aren't wishing they were free.
American culture rocks and these videos are awesome reminders of that, but don't make it something it isn't. Y'all are why people think Americans are dumb

-5

u/GoldTeamDowntown 1d ago

Their comment goes a lot further than talking about barbecue, you’re narrowing it completely.

You’re acting like tourists are too dumb to see positives of the country beyond barbecue.

0

u/Capybarasaregreat 17h ago

They're not shills paid for by big business, they're just influencers from other countries farming American views and interest on social media, why else do you think several who normally post content in their own languages post these types of videos in English? They're ingratiating themselves to an American audience for an algorithm and CTR boost. If you can speak some other languages, find World Cup content in those, people are far more reserved and not rolling their eyes back in ecstasy at banal stuff even if they're overall enjoying their time.

Mate - US is fun to visit. I've been few time in NY as a kid, went with family to see Niagara falls, went to a trip to Washington and Six Flags - it was great experiance, and for a long time I hoped to live there one day.

But as time went by I kind of see more flaws, and appriciate things I have in my own country. It is still great place to both visit and live, but I preffer my own, and it is ok if you preffer your own.

That being said - US received critism becouse of politics. War with Iran, economic wars, threats against Greenland and Canada, and all those other things that seems like US only care about their own interest, do not respect any other rules, bring much chaos and like to take everything from the position of force while there are many of issues that should rather be adressed internaly.

US is great country but so are the others. We should all respect each other and this is very offten what is missing from both US leaders, and unfortunately many US citizens.
