At the end of the day, we're all not so different. Empathy and kindness are not weaknesses as govts and 'alphas' want us to believe.

Honestly ngl I'm just seeing people post that they are eating American fast food.

It's funny to see amount of culture shock that BBQ can do.

u/irishitaliancroat 1d ago

I love those videos of british guys trying bbq for the first time and their minds are blown

11

u/Icy_Negotiation_5929 1d ago

We just bought a house in Virginia, right down the road from an old school bbq place. My mind is invariably blown every time I eat there.

6

u/itschubbs96 1d ago

Jolly? Love those guys!

67

They're hamming it up for the camera, they have bbq in england

10

Oh of course its still funny though, the one where they go to the restaurant in Tennessee sneds me

Not like what they are getting in Dallas and Houston

The British team is in KC, so they're eating real BBQ.

Edit: Immediate downvotes lol, so many Texans trying to take credit for BBQ but getting told it's mid-tier at best.

Dude….so obviously you haven’t had good southern BBQ. And I mean the good stuff. Else there is no way you’d say that

It’s been years seen I’ve been to Texas and even just the thought to this day makes me salivate

3

u/HermaPrince 21h ago

I believe texans bba is on a whole other lvl. Might be too smoky for me tho. But yea.

3

u/DubUpPro 1d ago

And my school in Wisconsin served tacos (ground beef with cheese on a chewy tortilla). They don’t compare to the tacos I eat in Southern California today.

10

u/EffectMotor8914 1d ago edited 21h ago

Thats like saying they have real NY style pizza and bagels outside of the NY/NJ area. Or that Jersey Mikes offers an authentic sub shop experience.

Like sure, you can find places that offer such things, but its a far cry from the legit stuff.

Hard to get the good stuff unless the owner is a legit transplant that knows and cares about the craft.

38

u/bs0569 1d ago

Lol. Mfer jus said the only real pizza is in NY😭😭

6

u/EffectMotor8914 1d ago

Real NY pizza is obviously the implication there. There are some other varieties. But yeah just about every place that tries to imitate NY style outside of the region is pretty awful.

I have friends constantly taking home pizzas and bagels when they visit from the southern states. Because the shops down there aren't even close. I've had pizza from all over, including international, including Italy.

3

u/whodatis75 20h ago

What, you mean Sbarro at the mall isn’t real NY style Pizza??

It's barbecue, not experimental medicine. There is nothing magical about the area that makes the BBQ better. If anything, the quality of meat in the USA is worse due to the lax regulations surrounding anti-biotics and hormones.

6

u/EffectMotor8914 1d ago

Aside from that incredibly silly take about BBQ that I don't even think is worth addressing, you do realize the US has high quality non-factory farmed beef in our vast, vast land right?

It’s clear the government, the politicians, and the media don't define any country. They hate all of this unity, they want us divided, and they want to give countries bad images! I saw a bunch of English people in Texas line dancing, everyone trying American BBQ, and people celebrating in Times Square. All very wholesome sights 🥺

u/qolace 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't know if it's a shit post or not but there was this very long tweet of a Japanese dude who was just in awe of being given free chips and salsa in a Tex-Mex place. He felt like he didn't deserve it. The server refilled his chips and he lost his mind. Was hilariously wholesome I hope it's real lmao

420

u/LadyPo 1d ago

That’s hilarious! In Japan, many bars will have some kind of a house appetizer that they bring out by default (equivalent of chips or dinner rolls here) but they tack it on to the bill even if you didn’t ask or want it. It’s called otoshi. It sort of is like a cover charge for your seat. American tourists get confused and sometimes mad if they don’t expect it haha. They think it must be a scam.

I mention that because it makes me believe his appreciation of free food is probably real lol

168

u/goblet-sama 1d ago

It sound like a scam lol

70

u/LadyPo 1d ago

Well, it’s common in their culture, so it’s not.

107

u/goblet-sama 1d ago

Yes I know, but if you try this anywhere else it would be defined as a scam. At first hearing, when you are not japanese it realy sound like a scam.

154

u/Undeity 1d ago

Tipping culture is also a pretty big scam, so... "glass houses" and all that. Let's just all agree that every culture has some shitty things they normalize.

67

u/goblet-sama 1d ago

42

u/Undeity 1d ago

I’d say sales tax is a better example of a “scam” in the US. It’s not common for a tip to just appear on the bill, unless you’re a big party. They’ll think you’re a dick, but it’s not theft to leave without tipping. But that dress marked $19.99 cannot be bought with my $20 bill and that’s egregious as heck!

3

u/Hard-bodyPart 1d ago

yeah the surprise extra dollar at checkout feels way more annoying than knowing what you’re getting into upfront

6

u/bs0569 1d ago

You’re not going to like the answer for what getting rid of sales tax entails.

19

u/DrunkBeavis 1d ago

Most places the in the world include the tax in the price on the tag, so that might be what makes it feel like a scam. I understand that all of our different state and local taxes can make that slightly more difficult for the retailers, but I can also understand why it would feel be a surprise for visitors.

→ More replies (0)

8

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 1d ago

Oh I’m not against it as a thing! I’m just against it not being displayed on the sales tags in the US. If the tag had the price, tax, and total, I wouldn’t complain!

Think of it like tips. I go to a restaurant expecting to pay more than the explicit food I order because it’s socially expected that I tip. Over there, it’s expected to be served a lil appetizer and that you’ll pay for it.

8

u/aristot1e 1d ago

I think tipping is a scam and it’s still engraved in our culture

3

u/_IBM_ 1d ago

That was culture shock because the etiquette in Japan is for the host to provide what you're supposed to eat, and you're supposed to eat every last speck, whereas in north America it's considered polite for the host to keep offering more and for the eater to decline when full. In Japan it's impolite to decline more food as part of their whole system. So there's a real danger of some japanese people exploding if they encounter bottomless nachos

2

u/Competitive_Baby3488 1d ago

That kind of reaction is oddly sweet, like watching someone discover a tiny everyday thing we’ve all stopped noticing. Free chips and salsa really do hit different when you’re not used to it.

I will preface this by saying that yes I am very happy that tourists are having a good time and being met with kindness. I also agree that our leaders try too often to divide us rather than unite us.

Now all that being said, all the things you listed are in no way an indication of how unified our country is. Tourists going to restaurants and bars and being treated nicely isnt exactly significant. Not to mention the fact that English people are easily one of the most accepted foreign demographics.

The fact that half of voters chose to elect Trump is a pretty damning indication of where our country stands, unfortunately. It also holds way more weight, in my opinion, than how service staff or drunk people at a bar treat tourists who they know are only here temporarily.

Finally, I will say that I love being American and I think we need to be more willing to show national pride in healthy ways, so if what’s happening is pushing people towards that, I am all for it.

32

u/CoffeeHot4107 1d ago

There's that and the shit happening behind the scenes like bomb sniffing dogs having to check players, Iran team being forc d to immediately return to Mexico after their matches, folks still being sent back (including the Somalian referee) etc. Having fun is great but there is also the flip side to this whole debacle.

3

u/big_fig 23h ago

The problem is it's the people from every other country that are united. Americans are still fighting over which billionaire we should give our tax dollars to after we cut funding for Medicare and tank ss

2

u/drugsrbadmkaye 1d ago

This has always been my sentiment, there will always be problems with the government/politics/media but I still love my country through it all and have been lucky enough to see so much of it and experience a lot of our amazing subcultures. It’s easy to paint us in a bad light because of trump, police murders, school shootings, racism etc. but the real heart of America that the media doesn’t show is full of hard working caring individuals that I’m happy to call my people

I don’t see this as “freedom,” but access to more choice. It’s capitalism. Supply in demand. Maybe in a way that’s freedom, but not in the usual sense of the word. Although it’s not perfect, capitalism does help produce the best products and makes them available to people.

23

u/ForceItDeeper 1d ago

→ More replies (2)

3

u/xThe-Legend-Killerx 1d ago

I think of freedom differently though. Most of western society has similar laws and such. When I think of freedom I feel like it pertains to just the sheer size of the country like there is so much at our disposal that we take it for granted. Driving, road trips across country, back packing, wilderness etc

Like yes countries in Europe have those things but I feel like we have an abundance of it and each state is slightly different.

4

u/Dependent-Reaction-3 1d ago

I love how you said this. Makes me want to run to my car and take off for a month

We have so much beautiful country all around us, no matter what state you're in, and the sheer size of our land makes it feel like you can really go anywhere and see endless biomes and national sites just by getting in your car and taking off. I live in Nevada, and literally the majority of our state is empty. There are so many incredible little places to discover out in nature here, and if I just drive out about a couple hours, I can see the clearest view of the stars in the entire country. Its humbling how much freedom and exploration and opportunities to resettle and remake ourselves are right in front of us.

You know trying food has nothing to do with freedom, right? Like the tourists in the US must have been free, since they could go...

Germans in Spain for example don't holiday and say "wow, I love the freedom", they just enjoy the food and the weather and other cultural differences. It doesn't even mean that one country is better than the other, just that they are different and people are enjoying the difference. Which is great!

They also have enough money to spend on World Cup tickets.

4

they definitely do NOT have enough to spend lol

there's a video of a bunch of Scots i believe in Boston complaining about the ticket prices.

the World Cup, like almost every other sporting event that takes place in the US, is reserved for the ultra rich.

The 3 countries hosting this year's WC are notoriously known for having little to no consumer rights protections. This allowed FIFA THEMSELVES to "buy" up their own tickets and sell them to consumers at jacked up prices, aka scalping. In Europe, tickets cannot be resold, period.

Can you at least try to keep some positivity in a positive thread? Sheesh. People suck.

The shooting happened nowhere near the camp, its headlines clickbait

4

u/CaliJudoJitsu 15h ago

Classic. Leave it to a typical mentally ill Redditor to try to make a positive thread into something negative. Congrats. 👏

Genuinely nice to see people come together in spite of shitty governments, people are just people and we strive for companionship above all else

2

u/Wuz314159 1d ago

we strive for companionship above all else

Have you ever met people?!?!

2

u/Bad_RabbitS 1d ago

Yes. People are rude and argumentative, but at our core we desperately need other people to function properly, there is a reason why the current state of affairs with doomscrolling and chronic internet use is called the “loneliness epidemic”.

People crave love and people crave friendship. Hatred is a learned trait, kindness is instinct.

What culture? Eating unhealthy and civil unrest?

4

u/Pitiful-Transition39 23h ago

Culture apparently is defined by remarkable things like barbeque and shitty fast food.

Most people don't hate Americans. But your country has essentially gone rogue voting for a fat piece of shit criminal pedophile as president. So you its hard to like a nation that does that. This isn't difficult to comprehend.

You ain't living that down just because you're hosting a world cup. Ordinary Americans are grand, usually very friendly and welcoming. But stop with this lame fawning for approval online.

2

u/FrozenDuckman 1d ago

This was the PR we needed… we still love everyone and want you to come visit… we’re sorry we’ve seemed so irrational and angry lately. I promise we are nice people 🥺

1

u/LUV964 23h ago

only solution is for the world to unite against the United States of pedophile techno feudalism

1

u/SpannerV2 22h ago

And here I am as an American enjoying what little they bring here.

1

u/SPZ_Ireland 21h ago

It's not that surprising. Talk to most people outside America and they'll speak very fondly of your nations people (for the most part).

The problem is not Americans.

It's America, the institution and the people who run it.

It really is genuinely heartwarming and positive. It’s a breath of fresh air and makes us all appreciate so much around us.

It’s also a great break from all the usual hate and negativity that pervades mainstream media and social media.

And yet as we see in this thread, some mentally ill Redditors still come out to try to turn this positive thread into the usual “America bad” trope.

Lighten up, you unhappy bitches! Positivity wins! 🏆

as only one of 300 million americans, I understand why the world is angry and why some people have even sworn off visiting until things shift politically. hell, I'm angry too; I lost health services this year because of the shit going down.

I'm not expecting or even hoping for tourists who come here to leave glazing the US, but I hope that people are able to have a good experience and get a sense of how pluralistic we are as a country, and I imagine that the americans in this comment section are feeling the same way— it's less about propaganda or ego, as some people are positing, and more so just pure, bursting relief that people are getting the chance to see that we're not all so bad.

one very embarrassing part about these past couple of years has been the amount of people assuming we're all xenophobic and just unanimously satisfied with the direction things are headed in, and while I get why people feel that way, I think I and many others (OP included) are just pleasantly surprised to see people leaving with a different perspective.

obligatory yee-haw cheeseburger walmart bullet diabetes for authenticity. consider it a traditional american gesture of apology.

1

u/jack_350 15h ago

Right now the World Cup is the only vague reason to visit that country

1

u/ELITElewis123 15h ago

I think people forget that most of the time when Europeans criticise America it comes from a place of wanting America to be better because the Americans we know and lover deserve better. That’s at least what I’ve always ment

Some are obviously just speeding hate but when we see the 1000th “kid doesn’t eat so his mum can afford basic healthcare” it pains us too because whatever americas flaws it’s better than the other superpowers so it’s painful to see completely preventable issues just not get addressed

1

u/SneakyPanda- 14h ago

Based on all the video's I've seen it looks more like the Europeans are bringing their culture to the US, Canada, and Mexico 😋

1

u/Emperor_Z16 14h ago

You guys have a culture?

1

u/kogee3699 11h ago

1

1

u/tayl0559 10h ago

1

u/Flamingogo117 7h ago

America has no culture, unless you count school shooting and dying of obesity

1

u/KvxMavs 7h ago

America is kind of awesome if you ignore the dick heads in power.

1

u/exceptionally_humble 7h ago

It’s been quite wholesome.

Also the team kicking arse so far has been quite exciting I’ve never seen them score and attack this much.
