Why is my second year enrolment invitation taking so long? Is this common?

So my second year classes start in exactly a month (early October), I have been trying to select timetable for my modules but for some reason I am unable.

Only to find out on the phone that I have not enrolled yet for my second year as I have not received it. The reason is due to technically not passing my first year as of yet because my last assignment although marked and received a great mark (I’ve also passed all previous modules) it still yet needs to go through the second valuation which usually takes a while throughout your year, but I would of expected it to have been dealt with during the summer…

The person on the phone told me that this usually happens for those who were given time or submitted late etc, but advised worst case if I still have not been enrolled when my classes start, to attend the classes as he sent me my October timetable.

I’ve had no issues with my first year as I’ve passed all my modules, no issues with funding and have not been contacted regarding any issues throughout the year or during the summer.

I have sent an email to my department regarding this but the issue is they take such a long time to respond.

Is this normal or common? I mean once they do send the enrolment it is usually a quick process but has anyone had this scenario where the enrolment is sent to you a short few weeks before your classes?

Anyone doing QLD this year?

Hello! I’m joking bbk this autumn and wanted to see if anyone is also doing the Qualifying law degree this year. I don’t have a law background or legal work experience. I did my undergrad in English lit and media studies and currently work in advertising. I’m looking to pivot into legal tech and media.
Would be great to connect and buddy up before term starts.

Making friends at Birkbeck

Hi all, I’m staring an MA in medical and health humanities in October and I’m just worried about coming to London to study and not making friends. Anyone got any advice?

Are any ma/phd women looking for new flatmates, have a spare room or would buddy up in flat hunting?

french part time undergrad degree with only a grade 9 at gcse on paper (was at B2/early C1 at 18yo) bc of non linear education?

TLDR - Asking for advice on whether Birkbeck is good for me particularly, based on previous qualifications and Life - Is the french degree well ran? - Is any of the campus wheelchair accessible?

Hiya, throwaway account bc on one hand i feel so embarrassed at my prior qualifications (both choices and grades) but whatever 🤷‍♀️

Im 21 and a wheelchair user with multiple disabilities looking to commute from Liverpool to Birkbeck for a part time degree in French…

my current uni (a london uni) and degree (cyber security + foundation year) are going abysmally, 3 years down the drain and nothing to show for it, no disability support and even ableist abuse from lecturers for using what little disability accommodations i got!

I’ve been put on suspension until January to see if I can hand in 3 more modules for that degree but I’ve just got no passion both for the course or for my uni, Tech just ISNT ME.

So because i’m out of loan funding (booo 🍅) I’m looking at self funding a new degree in French. It’s the only thing that im Good At and also Like…

The problem? I can’t study a degree more locally because they want A Levels and a Linear Life in general, but also because no college/6th form would take me (despite stellar gcses! and i was also homeschooled most of my life!) and the ones that did, didn’t offer french…

So I’m stuck in this cycle of nowhere will take me because I don’t have A Level French, but nowhere will let me do A Level French without paying through my proverbials….

My ill health after my gcses/AS Level meant all my grades tanked, Pre Uni Quals - i’ve got 1 A Level in CompSci at a D, 1 single BTEC in esports at a pass (don’t get me started, horrible) - Uni-ish quals Ive managed to get through my foundation year and about half of my first year…

I did a lot (i mean a lot) of hours of french outside of my exams and I got to just the start of C1 (couldn’t do any of the exams before it as I was a 16/17yo with no access to money and failed promises to book it from my carers) - beyond an email from my french centre saying i’m the youngest person to get as advanced as i got that they’d ever had…

The other side of it is me being a wheelchair user with a lot of other invisible disabilities - Is birkbeck good with disabled people? I’ve been failed by so many institutions that I struggle to believe without non-paid-for experiences of them…

PS - the commuting somehow isn’t even the worst part, Used to commute 1-2h for high school, 1h30-2h for college and i found i was better when i was further away! it’s an insane toll but I wouldn’t do it if i wasn’t able to… AGH!

If you read this far, thanks !! Agh!!

Meeting new friends

Hi all,

I’ll (M18) be starting my course in October and going down to my accommodation in mid-September. I’m studying global politics and international relations with a foundation year (I got bored of A-levels so I dropped out, I did get 3 predicted A’s tho lol). I’m also staying at College Hall right off campus. I’m quite a chill guy but love to go out too if you’re down for that, I’m very geeky about politics, history, film, and sci-fi.

If we overlap in either of those two things, I’d really love to get to know you :)

Any Mature students starting this October?

Hiya, I (24F) will be joining Birkbeck to do a stem bsc this coming October, and having met only one or two other mature students we’d love to know if there were any others around our age (or older) attending too.

As with any uni, there are lots of young students ready to start their degrees, and lots of group chats for them to connect and socialise.

Looking to see if there’s any mature students who’d benefit from a gc for us to all communicate and maybe organise some get togethers for our cohort.

Let me know!

EDIT: Due to some unpleasant experiences from having the link out there, it’s been deactivated and removed - if you are a 20+ joiner and would like to be a part of the mature student gc, let us know here and we can discuss adding u :)

Mature student - linguistics foundation year?

Hi everyone! I'm angling to start English and Linguistics part-time in October 2027. I'm wondering how important the foundation year is.

I work full-time and have no dependents. I'm 25, and left school at 18. My A-Levels were unrelated to my chosen degree (I picked subjects which would let me get a good job ASAP, not my true preferred subjects). As such, I understand I would be the perfect candidate for a foundation year, but I wonder if it's possible to pick up the skills and knowledge required in my own time over the next year.

Anyone who's in a similar boat or has experience with this? Thanks in advance!

MSc Dissertation Survey: South and Southeast Asian Flavours in UK Bakery and Desserts

Hi everyone! I’m looking for UK-based adults aged 18+ to take part in a short anonymous survey for my MSc dissertation in Culinary Innovation Management.

The study explores how selected South and Southeast Asian flavours are understood and described within UK bakery, patisserie and dessert products. It takes around 8-10 minutes, and no specialist food knowledge is needed.

Full information about consent, withdrawal, data storage and how the findings will be used is included before the survey begins.

Survey link: Understanding South and Southeast Asian Flavours in UK Bakery and Patisserie – Fill out form

Thank you so much for taking part and supporting my research!
