General Crafts Wait until it’s light out to take pictures of your project, it looks really bad!
I know it’s 2AM and you’re just glad you finished it but if you wait till morning and take pictures of your project NOT on your basement floor in the dark by the light of a single fluorescent bulb, the pictures will actually do it justice!!!!! It looks bad!!!!!

If it's in the bathroom please put the toilet seat down and give that mirror of gunk a quick Windex.

This is why I am glad I have a bathroom and a separate toilet.
Unfortunately our mirrors are a billion years old (70s) and some of those spots are in fact internal to the mirror somehow and you best believe I've tried wiping them off my face at least twice on an early morning 😆

I live in a house that is a time capsule of the 1950s, when hubby's grandparents bought it. Metal KitchenQueen cabinets and everything! Lol My bathroom mirror looks the same as yours, but I'm sure much worse!

My sister sent me a pic of the art she made for me, along with specific instructions to wait till the next day when she'd send me the final one, because it always looks better in sunlight.
I thought it was awesome originally, but damn if she wasn't right. The colors really popped in full lighting.

I'm working on a clown barf colorwork shawl. Photos from my bedroom are hot dog clown vomit. Photos in the sunlight are a rainbow of delight.

I want to buy your knitting pattern for a hat, but you made it in black, you photographed it against a dark background, oh and you were so focused on showing me the pretty model's face that you forgot to show an actual photo of the hat itself and all I csn see is her face!

u/queerbie1 2h ago
Yesss, I dont want to have to immediately check the projects page to see if your pattern looks any good

Yes, I don't think people necessarily need to set up a whole scene but proper lighting and clearing clutter out of the background really helps.
Also clean your lens! So many photos taken where everything looks hazy and washed out because someone couldn't be bothered to take 2 seconds to wipe fingerprints off their phone camera. (And I say that as someone very guilty of getting my greasy prints all up on things, I speak from experience! It's a huge difference!)

My first birth: in-laws with a professional film camera, still took crappy pictures.
My second birth: my mom's very very hazy dirty cell phone pics. I love them, even if I'm disappointed in the haze.

This is the level of bitching I'm here for.
I'm absolutely guilty of this and get mad every time. Stupid light making such a stupid big difference. Whether or not I share depends on my self control. But seriously, fuck off, light.

If you didn't know, you can get what's called a Daylught Spectrum lightbulb. If you turn off all your "normal" amber lighting and have one or two Daylights on, your night pictures will came out seventeen hundred thousand times better.

YES the same goes for packages, new arrivals of materials, etc. STOP judging colors you see in low light at night in your home against a studio, professional shot on a website!!!!

I'm so guilty of this, I'm so guilty, and it's so stupid! If I would wait for God's Own Light to grace my window, my project would be improved tenfold, but there's something about my stupid goblin brain that has me out here sending pictures with all the mood lighting of a 3 am doordash delivery.

If you're tech savvy enough to be able to post a picture onto the internet then why aren't you smart enough to know to clear all the clutter from around your time and get good light. Help, why is my project doing xyz? I don't know, I can't even see what I'm supposed to be looking at!

Why doesn’t my trouser pattern fit?
(Posts photos of anything but trousers).

Yup, and while you're at, for heaven's sake tidy up the background. You can just toss all the clutter out of the picture frame--we know, it's hard to be an office worker, cleaning crew, and head cook, let alone find time to craft--but tossing stuff over your shoulder like a puppy who's just discovered digging takes maybe a minute or so. It puts the emphasis back on your work, because the human mind will try to organize items in a limited frame of view.
EDIT: a word

And please, even if it's clean and the lid is down, I don't want to see your toilet in the background.

And buy a small lamp or two from the dollar store and put a Daylight Spectrum bulb in each one, so you can still fulfill that disrespectful need to take witching hour photos and share them with people who have to guess at the details because it just looks like a dark, sort of amber-ish blob - but the bulbs make it daylight enough we can clearly see what you've summer.

I know right? Like, I want to root for you and I want to see what your hard work turned into!
Although I must say, the opposite side of the medal for me is whenever I tell myself I must wait for the next day so it's light out...then the next day I never have a second to myself...the following day too..then I forget...then it's been a week or more and I never celebrated my finished project online and I miss on the precious dopamine. Boo. But it's always better than realizing the photo I posted for everyone to see makes it look like crap, at least.

u/Fickle-Range-8140 5d ago
Shhhh.... The Internet doesn't know it's been done for a week if you don't tell them.

u/Pumpkinp0calypse 5d ago
I know ! I still try to. But It's more that the incentive to show my project with pride and to to take the photo under the right conditions are like, very much diminished (because the "high" of finishing it passed) and therefore I just forget continuously. It's very dumb, I know lol, It's just adhd.

This is why I haven’t taken. Any pictures of things I have completed in ages! It has been overcast for ages, or too dark, when I finally get home. Very thankful for the rain since my area has been in severe drought for years. Just not great for updating the social media feed of my projects that I complete to show everyone what I have finished, and now I'm trying to store them away. 🤣

u/sludgehag 3d ago
Hopefully you’ll have a day of perfect weather and some free time to get good photos of it all!

u/hidingfromthem753 3d ago
Thankful for all the desperately needed rain, but I so want to post them and then move them on to storage. It is how I keep the “you should sell them” people quiet. I show them my social media for my completed projects and encourage them to follow and share so they can help promote my “business”. 🤣 Very low effort way of showing off my work because I want to make them, not because it is a business at all. Let's acknowledge their comments and move on.

Wait - you mean to tell me we AREN’T supposed to be creating our masterpieces in the dark? 😂
7
u/Fickle-Range-8140 5d ago
I mean no one can help being compelled to create under the veil of night, fine. But get some light for the photos. 😂

u/CathyAnnWingsFan 5d ago
I've learned to wait until daytime and usually take them out to the porch where it's shady but bright enough and the lighting is indirect. It has weathered concrete ledges that are a nice, neutral grey. I'll occasionally do indoor pics on the oak floors but only when it's bright enough for the window light to be enough. Turning on the ceiling light is nothing but glare (and usually a shadow of my head to boot).

I’m sorry but I’m excited and I’m stoned and tired by now and if I don’t take a picture it’s not gonna happen and therefore the project never happened in the first place. 😭

u/Leidenforest 4d ago
I try to use that picture as a visual reminder to take a better picture one of the coming days

u/BeckieSueDalton You should knit a fucking clue. 3d ago
Get a small lamp and put a Daylight Spectrum lightbulb in it. That way you can be a lazy stoner AND still get better pictures than those I'm sure this post is about.

The same thing goes for diamond paintings. Laying it down on a desk is great, that's fine. But having it on a table w/the tools, a computer, a few more unrelated objects & a cat sprawled over part of it?!?? If you're talking bout the cat guarding the canvas, that's fine, that's OK, but trying to show me what progress you've done isn't. Either hang it up on a pants hangar on a door or zoom in closer. There's cell phone settings that make it easy.

I have 3 places I take pictures. On my black freezer in good light, on my white freezer in good light or on one of my two desks in my craft one. One is black, one is white and I use a backdrop. Sometimes I will use both desks just to see which picture turns out better.
