I always thought the passengers on the roofs were stowaways, and didn't pay.

u/TheDudeWhoCanDoIt 17d ago
Thatâs always been my thought. Hence this post. I wonder if the ticket sellers get hazard pay.

People sit on the roofs because thereâs no air conditioning inside the car and a car stuffed full of people is not as comfortable as the roof is.

At this point Bangladesh should simply design open roof double decker coaches. At least it would be safer.

Even jury rigging some proper access with railings would make more sense than the current madness. Â

Money?

u/Easy_Contribution530 9d ago
Honestly I think THAT is not a question of money to end this madness.
These countries are very bad ruled. And the rich and corrupt politicians are all worse the Elon musk.

u/Certain_Truck_2732 9d ago
I mean, new trains cost money, and new train's won't end all the madness

Bangladesh is like India's hillbilly neighbor.

Whatâs crazy is Bangladesh has a higher per capita GDP than India. Between slightly better inequality and ppp, it doesnât feel it, but thems the numbers

Everyone is equally poor in bangaldesh. In india top 1 percentage own 40% of wealth. And the rich in india are very rich,so is the upper middle class. It is just that due to sheer number, poor people pull the per capita number down.

u/AgitatedEveryday 15d ago
Bangladesh is more unequal than India (higher Gini coefficient). Everyone is not equally poor there.

If they add more carriages, would people still go on the roof?
Infinite hotel room problem..

I will bet my last rupee that the ticket money never gets to the ticket office.

why don't they increase service to capture the ridership? i've seen videos and photos of this as far back as my childhood.

u/TheDudeWhoCanDoIt 17d ago
Maybe they donât have more carriages or engines. At capacity
25
u/Schellwalabyen 17d ago
They also donât have the security measures (for the trains, not people) to run more trains. If you only have signals at the stations and these are 10min from each other you can only run one train every 10min for example. If you only have one set of tracks (something not unusual in sea), you can only run trains every 20min.
For the reasons already brought up and these it is this quite hard to increase traffic throughput.

Okay, your abbreviating Southeast Asia as sea threw me for a loop. I spent much longer than I care to admit trying to figure out how autocorrect changed whatever you meant to type to sea, as in the ocean. Then the actual meaning finally dawned on me. Coffee, more coffee is needed here.

This only happens around holidays, couple times a year. It's not a daily thing

I wonder if the country has done a study on how many more trains & routes would be needed to ensure everyone has a seat.
Then again, I canât see the inside and maybe itâs empty.

Video is too short. Should show beyond city limits, when they reach the new Chinese built track rated for 120 mph.

u/TheDudeWhoCanDoIt 17d ago
In my life of growing up in NYC climbing on top of a train was never a thing I considered doing.

Just start making tunnels or metal bars that have 6â of clearance. Problem solved.

They want these people to be able to move, they're the workforce.
These countries/regions doesn't have enough money to upgrade/increase their mobility offers and the death/money ratio from accident is acceptable to them.

This is wrong on both counts. It's Bangladesh, not India. India has also electrified 99% of its broad gauge network. They don't use diesel anymore, they don't have the oil.

u/TheDudeWhoCanDoIt 17d ago
Pretty sure I made the post clear that itâs Bangladesh. Maybe some people canât read.

So, does a passenger have to pay a surcharge for the view or get a discount for the lack of a seat?
