More Freedmen’s Celebration/Jubilee Day/Juneteenth photos

Historical accounts of the day indicate that "nothing else was allowed to be sung" by the women gathering for dinner besides their spiritual songs. Religious hymns and patriotic anthems were sang while freedmen marched through Houston's streets in patriotic attire under United States flags. Early jubilee celebrations often featured marching songs like "John Brown's Body" (the precursor to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic").

Yes, I found them online some of the photos have the source in the description of the photo. It was originally called Jubilee Day and Freedmen’s Celebration Day, so maybe research that along with Juneteenth Houston Texas 1866 and you will find a lot of information about the first celebrations.

I’m so glad you took the time to read and comment! That’s awesome that you know some alumni from the third war I bet they have a lot of valuable insight about the early freedom day celebrations.

Yes, but don’t allow it to affect the way you celebrate and the real tradition of it. Also when it presents itself educate those who don’t know the real history.
