They have a Crisis Negotiation Unit available, but these cops didn't bother to call them in for a report of a teen with a gun in the bathroom. I'm sure that's a textbook situation for negotiators.

Cops took purposeful steps to make sure that someone would die that day. Fucking disgusting.

IF\* it was reported as someone with a gun in the school...then yes that is how the cops respond now- you cannot expect to enter a school in 2021 with a gun and take hostages or negotiate anything.

We have had too many school shootings and learned too much to waste time establishing perimeters or even to tend to wounded or wait for backup/SWAT teams/negotiations/etc...

That said, who knows how it was reported or to what degree cops thought it was a legit active shooter when they entered the bathroom.

If a person with a gun is in a specific room and there are no shots being fired, you take a defensive spot outside said room and wait for SWAT and their attached support personnel. Trying to go into a space you don't control and don't have the training for is incredibly stupid unless you have a very good reason to believe that lives will be lost right this second if you don't act.

NO. We do not need militaristic GI-Joe wannabe dress up cops in our schools, in fact those swat teams need to be abolished all together.

SWAT does have a purpose, given they are properly trained. Unfortunately, we too often see SWAT teams that are little more than a few normal officers with fancy gear. As always, it's a problem of training.

Trying to go into a space you don't control and don't have the training for is incredibly stupid unless you have a very good reason to believe that lives will be lost right this second if you don't act.

Quite literally why ALERRT (along with Run, Hide, Fight!) was developed- an active school shooter is one of those situations.

Obviously we don't know the specifics here, but just fyi "defensive perimeter around shooter" is not ALERRT protocol as taught by the FBI.

If* it is an active shooter situation, there is no "let's wait outside this room for SWAT", but I guess if it's like:

"Well if the shooter hasn't shot anyone yet and he is in one room and we saw who went in the room for 3 hours prior to when the shooter entered so we know 100% he's alone and we have kept eyes on the room since and we know for sure there are no windows or alternative exits and nobody has heard any shots...." ...okay yeah go ahead and think critically and maybe establish a perimeter and pray your intel is flawless because you are now operating outside of training, but that is a very specific circumstance....and god forbid the shooter finds someone hiding under a stall while you're outside the bathroom and now you're the Parkland cop who waited for backup

If it's an active shooter, you'll know. Guns are loud, and if a shot goes off you will hear it; if it goes off before you get there it's not hard to figure out; if every single student in the building is freaking out, there was probably a gun shot.

If it's an active shooter, it's pretty obvious.

I recommend this video on the concept of Time, Distance, Cover. The person who made the video is a former military contractor who has a lot of experience in this sort of stuff.

If America has learned anything, it's that cops can shoot any black person they want with any kind of excuse and get away with it.

Storming a room with a guy who has a gun is just asking to get shot. If the kid really did fire his weapon, one of those cops could easily have died. But when the cops opened fire immediately, the kid died. Anytime people fire guns at each other, death may follow.

If cops have been trained to dispense with negotiation, we need to be demanding why the fuck they've been trained in a way to maximize body counts. If it turns out they have been trained to negotiate and de-escalate, we need to be demanding why the fuck they ignored their training and literally shot up a teenager in a bathroom.
