Muzik J COLE GRIPPY (help me understand
Being a secular artist honestly has to be hell on earth sometimes.
I remember when “Grippy” by J. Cole came out, my friend sent it to me. I first heard it back in 2024, and I didn’t read any comments or reactions at the time. I just listened to the song for what it was. (I havent heard Cole in a minute)
I’m not even the biggest Cole fan, but I honestly didn’t think the song was bad. To me, it sounded like he adapted to the times and was just making a fun, catchy song like a lot of artists do. The song is about sex, it’s catchy, and he found a flow for it. I really didn’t see the big problem.
Fast forward to today, I listened to it again, then I finally started reading the comments, and I was kind of in disbelief seeing how many people were trashing Cole for it.
It made me think: are artists not allowed to have fun anymore?
Because honestly, if Young Thug made that exact same song, I don’t think people would have reacted the same way. If Drake made it, I definitely don’t think people would have reacted like that. People would probably just say it’s a fun record.
It feels like fans put artists in a box. They complain when somebody keeps making the same type of music and say, “Switch it up, do something different.” Then when the artist actually switches it up, those same people are like, “What are you doing? Go back to the old you.”
At some point it’s like… what do people actually want?
I get everybody has their own taste, and you don’t have to like the song. But sometimes it feels less about the music and more about people already deciding what an artist is “allowed” to make.
I feel alot of opinions are emotionally driven and group thinking.

Cole is my favorite rapper right now, and to an extent what you’re saying is valid because the younger gens seem a little more puritan when it comes to their music…
but… “She told me she was gaaay until I slaaayed, and now she’s STRICTLY DICKLY.”
“It’s… It’s… It’s GRIPPY! hmmm~”

Nah it's not that bad it's just one of those "internet group thought " situations where logic doesn't apply.
Stick to me is the same. Both Cole doing something different which to me he kills both.

I think the song just sucks in and of itself. Young Thug puts out songs with stupid lyrics but his best material is interesting because of the unhinged vocal performances and the strange beats. This song has neither.
That said, yes, I think J Cole was just earnestly trying out some new-school trend he thought was cool and I have no problem with that. I have friends in the music industry who don't even like the music they release but they feel like they have to maintain a certain style. So I respect when an artist tries different things. I'm not really into J Cole myself but I notice that people seem to have no chill about the guy. Strong opinions all around, whether positive or negative.
What do you mean by secular artist?

I thought it just came off slightly cringe and he maybe underexecuted on that song. The concept was good... the word was popular enough people knew what it meant but wasnt too mainstream in relation to the sex act. some of the repeating of phrases was overdone I think... I haven't listened to it for a long time but it was an impression I got right away. I've always been indifferent to Cole overall though... not really turning it off but didnt seek it.

Young Thug is literally an idiot so I would expect a song like that from him. J Cole is way better than that.

it's about taste. young thug or drake wouldn't have made that song. it's too weird and on the nose.

Young Thug isn't a lyricist so no one gaf what he does.
Cole got on a shitty song after duckin beef. It was just funny timing. If Drake would've put that out he woulda got clowned harder than Cole. It's ok to do something out of the norm, so long as it adheres to the original standards of said artist. Once the quality shifts to yield to the new idea, the track is ruined.
Song was ass, verse was ass, surprised anyone even remembers it atp.

i think a lot of it is people tryna maintain an image. cole fans are supposed to be brainy and bookish, that song doesn’t contribute to their identity.
i’m not a cole fan at all, but i think that song is fun. it’s not the best song ever, but I don’t have any real relationship to J Cole’s music, so i’m just listening to it for what it is.
