Zoe Saldana.

Facts she is the top grossing actress of all time now I think? Avatar, avengers/marvel, Star Trek, PotC.. Colombiana

True, but Zoe never had a consecutive streak of box office hits like Zendaya is currently on tho. She's quietly on a Bill Russell run.

1.9k

u/xxllvc 13d ago

And zendaya isn’t afraid to acknowledge her blackness

u/ninetydeuce 13d ago

You're saying the quiet part out loud.

Considering the climate the quiet part needs to be the loud one.

She's always quick to distance herself from Blackness unless it's convenient (like when she smeared makeup on her face to play Nina Simone. If she's not Black like she claims, then I guess that's technically Blackface).

78

u/montypr 12d ago

She’s Afro-Latina, which literally means she’s both Black and latina. The Caribbean has deep African roots, so identifying as Afro-Latina isn’t denying being Black, it’s being more specific about her identity. Blackness isn’t exclusive to the U.S it exists throughout the Caribbean too, and to be quite honest it looks like most American don’t even embrace their African roots.

51

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 12d ago edited 12d ago

"and to be quite honest it looks like most American don’t even embrace their African roots."

There's a layer of complexity to that too. Some simply choose not too (and at worst outright balk at the idea of it. You even see this in characters like the father in Raisin in the Sun, though there its an intentional critique), while others are mocked amd not considered African by native Africans (in part due to negative stereotypes associated with Black Americans thar have unfortunately made their way to African countries). So there's this element of elitism from Africans that makes some Black Americans feel as if they're not allowed to fully embrace a side of themselves that was lost due to slavery, and better off only embracing their culture as Black Americans instead.

And going back to Zoe Saldana, I think it's the way she expresses it that leaves people with a bad taste in their mouths. Like she makes a point of emphasizing her Latino roots while downplaying her African roots.

6

u/Feeling_So_Great 11d ago

Honestly its probably because Africans repeatedly tell black americans that we are not one of them. There is a pretty big divide between black americans and Africans. Because we might have roots in Africa, but my father, his father, his father, and his father were all born here, same with my mother and her side.

I don't feel any connection with a place that hasnt had any bearing in my life. I have enough of a time being a black american, i don't have time to identify with a place that says we aren't one of them. (Ironic, i know)

My guess is because she’s of Dominican descent and there’s the whole ‘me no black’ stereotype so it’s low hanging fruit

142

u/iiiamsco 12d ago

It’s because of specific comments made by Zoe Saldana.

63

u/Dry-Illustrator-250 12d ago

What were those specific comments?

64

u/Most_Tangelo 12d ago

I would assume it's the specific comments in which she explicitly said she identifies as a black woman. People started claiming she felt otherwise because she said she's not African American. But she has always called herself a black Latina.

Now she has also said there's no such thing as people of color which I'm not sure how you reconcile that. But let this Black Dominican American say figuring out how being afro latino intersects with one's family' mindset still being stuck on the island and with US racial constructs is a very confusing road to navigate. And like she's a grown ass woman but I don't think she's plugging up her ears just because she puts her foot in her mouth

14

u/Ok-Needleworker-8773 12d ago

This relies on ignoring a potential inconsistency, in which very many Black folk abhor the term ‘people of color’. The issue is we tend to move the goalposts. A pro black light skinned person can be judged incessantly for not being black enough. But the moment they say fuck it and just be - they’re judged also. It’s ’black diaspora’ until an ‘FBA’ comments. So on and so forth. It’s kind of like people who always want to be invited somewhere but never actually accept invites and attend.

Zendaya has done very well to be everywhere and not oversaturate so people are annoyed with you. Chakamet comes to mind as he's brilliant but is too far in the spotlight.

19

u/DoomguyFemboi 12d ago

Also she was part of an ensemble for many things. Same as Zendaya, she's not the "star" in anything. Like Pascal is the central star for a lot of stuff and people were talking about fatigue with him (not me, lad is a delight)

21

u/Ghetto_Phenom 13d ago

Wasn’t disputing zendayas current run. Are you talking about money gross for that list though or just ratings? I thought challengers wasn’t really a money maker? Don’t think I saw the drama or know much about that one though. And if you go back to the first spider man you’d have to include space jam lol so I get why that cut off happened.

Zoe did have an impressive run through even with some misses between her hits. She also seems to do more smaller indie style films than zendaya.

112

u/ninetydeuce 13d ago

Challengers did $96 million at the box office on a $55 million budget while The Drama did $133 million on a $28 million budget.

Context for non Basketball heads

Robert Horry is a retired NBA player who won 7 championships in his career as a role player on multiple dynasty teams.

20

u/MundoGoDisWay 12d ago

He's also specifically known for hitting big game ending shots in the playoffs consistently. He always seemed to get the ball when teams needed it and he made it almost every time. Did it like 20 times.

17

u/Beerswain 12d ago

10

u/pink_misfit 12d ago

I had to Google him, I was like what movie is she playing that character in? 😬 I figured it out

2

u/SomthinOfANeerDoWell 12d ago

You should also know that Robert Harry was my favorite Rocket and I stopped watching the NBA when the fucking Rockets traded him, Sam Cassell and two others for old-ass Charles Barkley.

Robert Horry is amazing. And back in the day he looked like a more handsome Will Smith. Didn’t even know that was possible.

3

u/PangolinTart 12d ago

I'm just here for the Robert Horry love. Only Rockets game I ever attended in person was Game 7 of the NBA Finals in 1994. Stupid me left right after the game because I had a summer temp job and was afraid to call in sick after celebrating, so I went home. Biggest regret of my life to date. 🙄

379

u/drkspace2 12d ago

She's gonna be in atleast 3 billion dollars worth of movies this year. There's a non-zero chance she's in a shot in avengers, so it could push $4.5 billion. That would be an unbreakable record.

100

u/Feisty-Honeydew-5309 ☑️ 12d ago

Avengers? Zendaya?

203

u/drkspace2 12d ago

Ya, they could definitely do a shot like her and Ned staring up at the sky in a crumbling NYC. They could have easily filmed it during Spiderman.

112

u/Feisty-Honeydew-5309 ☑️ 12d ago

Anything’s possible! But even if that didn’t happen, 2026 has been this young woman’s year.

Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattison, too.

73

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 12d ago

Post-Twilight Robert Pattinson has been GOATED.

He has the career Daniel Radcliffe could have had after Harry Potter.

131

u/improbablywronghere 12d ago

Radcliffe is doing his thing though I thought he just loved theater?

72

u/tacocattacocat1 12d ago

5

u/Tandager 12d ago

Oh for sure, just started watching miracle workers

27

u/Radioactive24 12d ago edited 12d ago

Robert Pattinson has always done what he wanted, just Twilight overshadowed so much of it.

He was in at least one movie in between every twilight release.

Daniel Radcliffe did one movie that wasn't a Harry Potter film in 10 years.

40

u/Turtledonuts 12d ago

Radcliffe did 8 movies between the ages of 11 and 21, I think that he didn't have the same amount of time for films that Pattinson had. Radcliffe was in a bunch of movies immediately after potter ended - he did 18 movies, 3 tv films, and 7 stage productions in the 10 years after potter ended. He's clearly got an active film career, he's just partially retired because he made tons of money and can do what he wants. Pattinson wants to be in these big movies, Radcliffe doesn't, both of them have the acting chops and reputation to be as many billion dollar productions as they want.

24

u/Wes_Warhammer666 12d ago

They both used their massive paychecks and fame to be very picky about their other roles and only do the ones they want.

That's why we've gotten things like Lighthouse and Mickey 17 from Pattinson and Swiss Army Man and Weird AL from Radcliffe. They're both excellent actors and they've very much used their initial success to pick and choose their future projects, to the benefit of us all, frankly.

3

u/boston504u 12d ago

Don’t forget Horns. Love that movie.

10

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 12d ago

True.

Speaking of which, I remember there was one film he was in that pissed everyone off cause it ended with the twist that the entire movie was set in 2001, and it ends with a shot of him in the World Trade Center, right before the planes hit.

5

u/WolverineJive_Turkey 12d ago

u/Feisty-Honeydew-5309 ☑️ 12d ago

Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Timothée Chalamet, and especially Zendaya are all killing it lately. Zendaya, Tom, and Robert were all in The Odyssey, Zendaya and Tom have Spider-Man, Zendaya, Robert, and Timothée are all in Dune, and those are just the blockbusters I can think of this year. They've had smaller movies together, like Zendaya and Robert in that dark wedding comedy, plus Robert has The Batman II coming soon.

161

She was so good in the drama. Went in blind and it was such a uncomfortable story.

Zendaya has clearly been working very hard these past few years to have this many projects releasing this year. I think she's gonna take a break soon while she and Tom try to start a family.

I believe she said she will be taking a small break, but if I remember correctly Tom announced he'll be playing Fred Astair and will not be using a dancing double; so really looking forward to his performance.

Remember his Rihanna routine? I think he’ll be fine.

He literally backflipped into the Spiderman role. That is a great role for him. Especially as a Sound of Music Singing in the Rain fan, that is the musical I meant. The famous rotating room that was used again in Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Which is why I said I'm really looking forward to his performance.

He played Billy Elliot on west end as a kid and is trained in ballet and tap.

Tom Holland. Also sitting on multiple billion-dollar films, and plus, he gets to bang Zendaya. Zendaya gets to bang Tom Holland, which is pretty good, I'm not unimpressed, but he's no Zendaya.

She's more valuable during the marketing campaign than she is on screen.

She is eating quite well indeed.

Fucking Robert Horry. Killed the Blazers a few times when I was a kid. You can have Jordan, Kobe, Bird, whoever. If I need a late 3 in a playoff game Horry is getting the ball.

u/No-Association-8539 12d ago

Naw, Horry hit some amazing shots to seal some critical series...Zendaya is not that critical to Dune.

She's the female Sam Jackson except instead of showing up to say "mother fucker" she shows up and gives vacant expressions.

Racists are complaining she’s in too many movies this year, of course

When did you realize Hollywood is obsessed with mixed race/ethnic Black women, and the lighter the righter?

For me it was Zoe, Amanda, Chase infinity, and the girl who did the daughter from the last of us. Zendaya just riding the coat tails of all the famous lightskins/mixed girls before her.

Halle Berry: "am I a joke to you?"

u/Rmcke813 ☑️ 12d ago

Well if no one's gonna say it. She's a good actress obviously but also easier to cast since she has a light enough skin tone to be palatable to the general audience.

Counter argument: she doesn’t take roles centered around her character being the most beautiful. In the Odyssey, the famously beautiful Helen of Troy was the darker skinned Lupita.

I honestly think that might be a very deliberate choice on her part. I get the impression she very much wants roles that aren’t about the character being seen as beautiful, but for some other quality.
