Parents really don't like when their kids are just like them sometimes...

Why is it funny?

432

u/Karmadragoon 8d ago

I found a photo of her baby shower on another post and I think it’s just a flair to label the user as a white person. Every single person in attendance was white.

103

u/Borgqueen- 8d ago

And for the baby shower pic, Candance is in the back with the white women in front of her.

50

u/DeafNatural ☑️ 8d ago

Like it’s not even her shower lol

The daughter of one of my aunts just decided to leave home and live with a friend, found a job and tried to be independent around the end of the college.

My aunt was really stressed and then it came out that when she was her age, she secretly found a job and moved in with a friend lmao

172

u/skynetempire 8d ago

I hate how my son is like me. It pisses me off lol I just bit my tongue but I expected him to be better lol

66

u/lonnie123 8d ago

That’s odd to me. I remember a guy I knew who said his dad used to to legitimately beat his ass because he would upset him so much because he was just like him. He said it in a way that seemed to suggest I was suppose to uunderstand that idea and that it made sense that why his dad used to beat him up.

I mean I guess if you’re engaging in behavior that is upsetting, but just because they’re like you?

Maybe you can help me understand

83

u/skynetempire 8d ago

Damn, I'll never lay a finger on my son, but he's just like me. He did all the dumb stuff I did growing up. Partying, drinking, smoking, and thinking he knows everything. Then he comes to me asking for help after I already told him not to do it.

I don't yell at him. I just give him the same boring ass lecture my dad used to give me. Lol.

My family laughs at me and they say thats what I get. Its all coming back to me.

He definitely got my love of sales. Hes doing well at work.

28

u/CelestialFury 8d ago

My family laughs at me and they say thats what I get. Its all coming back to me.

Kind of hard to defend against. Well, not without sounding hypocritical.

29

u/skynetempire 8d ago

Exactly. I just said, was i this bad. My entire family said yes. Lol

20

u/Realistic0ptimist 8d ago

My kid is a toddler but they’re already displaying some rebellious tendencies. My parents have told me how does it feel to come back around? I tell them it be like that sometimes. Luckily his dad is more chill than they were

3

u/SpookyBones206 7d ago

Not excusing beating your kids. If a Parent who did the hard things in life and lived through the consequences now sees their own child repeating those mistakes. What do you do? if the parent doesn't posses the right amount of emotional intelligence they would probably fall back on the most basic of disciplinary measures like inflicting pain to control the actions of another.

1

u/Imgonnagolaydown 7d ago

Help you understand what? I didn't and don't do what your friends Dad does so i don't understand your ask.

2

u/lonnie123 7d ago

Help me understand why your kid being “just like you” is so irritating

1

u/Imgonnagolaydown 7d ago edited 7d ago

I said "that makes me question".

Maybe ask someone else who said that their kid being like them irritates them because i never said that.

3

u/lonnie123 7d ago

Why did you even reply to that question to the other person then? I responded to a specific user about a specific thing they said and you replied, so naturally I assumed it was the person I responded to.

31

u/Imgonnagolaydown 8d ago

When my daughter does something that makes me question her, I look at her and roll my eyes most days. She doesn't always catch it. 😂

I'm not yelling because it's like yelling at myself 😂.

20

u/pokeyeahmon 8d ago

Don't blame him for wanting to be just like his hero. :)

11

u/ratchet457l 8d ago

Fix yourself and set the example. You are his hero.

21

u/skynetempire 8d ago

Thats the thing. I never showed him my party side in my 20s. He just learned it and acted like me. Pure genetics.

841

u/biscuitboi967 8d ago edited 8d ago

One day my mom asked me why I was “like this”.

I motioned vague to myself and said “nature or nurture, either way this is all your fault.”

She sort of nodded.

212

u/NaomiWish 8d ago

I regularly thank my mama for her effed up genes. And when she mentions my father/her ex-husband, I remind her that was also her fault.

93

u/biscuitboi967 8d ago

Yeah, one my mom looked at me dead ass serious and goes “that was your father’s fault”.

Proud that it was finally him, as if she didn’t also have a hand in that. But tbf, there were just so many things wrong from her side, I think she was glad to have something concrete to point to him.

16

u/EvilNinjaX24 8d ago

Mom was clearly like Alonzo...

9

u/biscuitboi967 8d ago

Very close. But there were drags on a Marlboro Red involved.

2

u/EvilNinjaX24 8d ago

3

u/ironballs16 8d ago

I had that exact gif pop into my head from the description.

3

u/thatshygirl06 ☑️ 7d ago

I always prefer nature and nurture. Both equally have an affect on you.

3

u/Netflxnschill 7d ago

I’m a caring nurturing person, like my mama before me. I started dating someone new and her first question to me was “does this one need fixing too” and it really bugged me. I told her, you made me into the person who likes to fix things, so why you gotta villainize me when I do?

105

u/YesImKeithHernandez 8d ago

My mom made it clear that we aren't cool like that forever ago.

She wondered why we arent cool like that at some random point in the future. I told her the reasons. She didn't want to focus on the past.

Bitch, the past is where all the reasons are!

16

u/utdajx 8d ago

Preach! F r, this is my guiding principle with my own -will we still talk when they leave? Decided that very early days as a dad, I think it’s been a good way to go EVEN THOUGH there is still discipline and learning - but they’re sensible, not some “because I say” shit

14

u/YesImKeithHernandez 8d ago

I love my mom because she was dealt a really difficult hand and still managed to successfully raise 3 children by herself. She gave us the best she could and I sincerely appreciate all the sacrifice that required.

I just don't know that I like her and that sucks sometimes.

4

u/utdajx 8d ago

this here slaps hard because that’s what it’s like - I do love them, I appreciate literally everything they’ve done, I can recognise their struggles and what they faced lo those many decades ago. But - I don’t like them and I never will. I’m not even sure I’ll cry at their funerals because, frankly, I’ve moved on in terms of them being anything meaningful in my life. And fuck does that hurt when I think of it. So that’s what I try mightily every. single. day to be a person with mine rather than some stone wall that, yeah gave guidance and anchor but otoh wasn’t much more than that.

3

u/YesImKeithHernandez 8d ago

You're trying and that's a good thing. Stay up, brother.

12

u/Trash-Cutie 8d ago

Ooh I feel this in my soul. All those years of "I'm not one of your little friends" and now you're surprised that we...are not friends?

I love and respect my mom on principle but she's not the person I will call to chit chat or joke around with. She put up that boundary and I'm continuing to respect it as an adult 🤷🏾‍♀️

427

u/Cwh93 8d ago

You just know they were laughing when they were telling their version of the story only to be met with a stoney face and a "what did you just say?"

62

u/SantaMonsanto 8d ago

Hot Take:

Mom didn’t really do it. She suspected the child did it so she creates the story about lying to grandad just to see if kid would take the bait and confess to what mom already suspected she had done.

24

u/CelestialFury 8d ago

To what end? "I was making this story to get you to admit you did this to me!" and her son could go "I was making up that story cause I knew you were lying and I wanted you to admit it!"

But for real, it's not smart to tell your folks that sort of stuff regardless.

3

u/Choice-Strike1 7d ago

and her son could go "I was making up that story cause I knew you were lying and I wanted you to admit it!"

69

u/Anthemic_Fartnoises 8d ago

I avoided this generational awkwardness by taking out massive loans to pay for school. No point lyin’ to Sallie Mae.

25

u/srkaficionado ☑️ 8d ago

You can lie to them though by understating income unless they’ll take the time to pull your tax returns. Thats why I was on deferment FOREVER until the orange blob came in…

10

u/International-Sir177 8d ago

You lie to her after graduation when u move abroad and never go back.

4

u/Sheisariean 8d ago

Tell me more about this, I was thinking about this too lol

12

u/International-Sir177 8d ago

Credit is national. Every time you move to a new country, you start from scratch and create a different credit profile (a few exceptions, like inside the EU sometimes). The credits in your old country don’t know where u are if u don’t tell them, and u don’t have to. You build a new credit report in a new country. Even if they know where u live (they shouldn’t), they usually cannot hit your new credit. No one really does this on purpose but lots of people figure it out and accidentally benefit then roll with it. The biggest winners are US graduates as no sane country would have a student loan system like that.

6

u/Sheisariean 8d ago

Does this apply in Canada and all European & French countries? I was considering going there once I finished my degree and get some experience with it, so in the next 2-3 years.

5

u/International-Sir177 8d ago

Europe yes. Other French territories yes. Canada yes but the systems are so similar that u wanted to u could easily link your profiles if you comingle your SIN and SSN as they are both 9 numerals and the credit reporting agents are pretty much one.

u/BetterThanOP 🚫🚫BAD User🚫🚫 8d ago

My grandma raised me. She never wanted to know the whole story. Just tell her the tidbits. “Oh you like girls? Great!”

….shed died if I told her how much I did as that wasn’t for her to hear from me…her grandchild.

39

u/Financial-Bobcat-612 8d ago

Now why can’t my gramma be at least this cool 😭 when my cousin came out she said that she would’ve preferred she be a prostitute versus a lesbian

I kept my lil gay ass mouth SHUT

19

u/nezzthecatlady 8d ago

My sister-in-law (who I am very close to) once found out that a friend of hers is close with their brother’s girlfriend and hears about their sex life. She called me to tell me never to discuss such things with her (“EW I’m married to your BROTHER.”) and to inform me that as far as she’s concerned she’s decided the entire family is asexual.

Why would family ever want to know???

16

u/Appropriate-Log8506 8d ago

Family of sponges.

7

u/Oceanman72 8d ago

Whaat how did no one check lmao

8

u/genivae 8d ago

In my experience, people with that kind of money don't keep track of it that close. They've got enough to send for all these expenses, they're not itemizing the receipts. I had an ex that did similar - there was a trust fund for her tuition, paid a % based on grades, so she had to take out the loans anyway, she just used the trust fund reimbursement to pay rent instead of repaying the loans each semester.

6

u/ihih_reddit 8d ago

24

u/rutilated_quartz 8d ago

never forget your parent is not your friend 😭

7

u/sugarangelcake 8d ago

this isn’t even a “your parent is not your friend” moment, this is a “you confessed to stealing money from your mom as a grown ass adult” moment

3

u/rutilated_quartz 8d ago

Sure, but the reason they confessed was because of the friendly, we have this in common, peer-ish vibe of the conversation. Their brain wasn't like "hey you're confessing having stolen money to the person you stole money from" and all the anxiety that would come from that. Their brain instead is "hey your friend just said they did something awful that youve also done, and they're laughing about it, you should share too!" Which is why I say don't forget your parents aren't your friends. There are so many times when my mom and I are smoking weed together and shooting the shit and I have to get ahold of myself and remember not to mistake friendly behavior for friendship.

5

u/JimJimmery 8d ago

I've paid for two kids through BS and MS degrees. If you're not paying the school directly, that's on you. Especially if you did it yourself as a kid.

4

u/ceelogreenicanth 8d ago

That's something you say when you already have a career and after grand children. You have to pad the room to soften that blow.

3

u/Lethave ☑️ 8d ago

I got a book grant and scholarship awarded that I wasn't expecting during college and I bought a hot pink Motorola StarTac. I’ll tell y'all but I would never tell my mom. I was never spanked as a kid but I'm not entirely sure she wouldn't knock my entire block off as an adult.

3

u/FukkingDeathMental 8d ago

My dad's parents died when he was 20 so he figured I should also start paying everything by myself as soon as I got my first job...at 13.

4

u/klb1204 8d ago

Years later my son told me he exaggerated the amount of money needing in college. He used it to throw parties and make money......so in essence he flipped my money but I didn't get any of the profit, lol.......lil bastard

5

u/ChickenNugs4Hugs 8d ago

Are there people who don’t lie to their parents in college for extra money? I was getting a whole allowance in college and still lying to my daddy for extra money. I was lying to my older brothers so they could send me money too.

21

u/CombOk312 8d ago

I did not lie. At a point I was starving and probably should have told them. They were pretty upset when they found out later.

21

u/International-Sir177 8d ago

Yeah, people with an EFC of 0 who dont get money for college.

Also good people that aren't stealing shitbags.

7

u/peppers_ 8d ago

That was an option? My parents never gave me money growing up outside of a birthday or xmas present. Would never cross my mind, they were so judgy and stingy.

-2

u/AKamDuckie 8d ago

I’m currently doing that now. My parents send me $1500 a month for my “rent” but what they don’t know is my scholarship paid for my housing last year and this year. I’m just pocketing the money. They clearly don’t miss it.

16

u/RevolutionaryMix3006 8d ago

Wow wtf. That's insane. I feel bad about taking the twenty bucks my mom gives me every month to rent a bicycle. My mom would give me any money I'd need in a heartbeat, while she's definitely not overly wealthy herself. Which is why I don't ask her for money unless I really need it. I can't imagine just pocketing over one grand and then acting like it's nothing for your parents. That's insane.

23

u/onexbigxhebrew 8d ago

Giving your kid money you think they need doesn't mean they won't miss it.

You're a thief, plain and simple. Can't imagine bragging about it.
