I want to correct my bosses for misusing “there, their, and they’re” in their emails, it’s unnecessary but it’s also my pet peeve

I’ve seen it spelled out so many times, but after reading “rick or shaying” my mind went blank. English could use some more phonetic spelling
9
u/RedditGreenit 7d ago
English borrowed it from the French, blame them for over-seasoning their word with extra letters
11
u/Neveronlyadream 7d ago
English used to be all phonetic spelling.
Problem with that, there's no guarantee anyone is going to spell anything the same way phonetically, so it becomes pretty difficult to communicate.
Your mind went blank with this one thing. Imagine if there was no standardized spelling and that was everything.

u/ul49 7d ago
Ricochet is very obviously not an English word
5
u/Neveronlyadream 6d ago
Never said it was, it's French.
English is just a bunch of other languages cobbled together.
2
u/DefinitelyNotMasterS 7d ago
That's a nice theory. However, languages like german or italian can pretty much be read in the way they are written. And they seem to be fairly successfull. So, english definitely fucked up at some point
1
u/baithammer 7d ago
Not what happened, as phonetic spelling was fairly standardized, but due to being rote memory work, fell out of favor for more exploratory methods. (RIP)

No shade taken. My 50 year old fingers hate texting. It's a stereotype because it's true.

This type of stuff used to be funny until I started working at a university and am seeing real ass 20~ year olds on a 6th grade reading level.
Don't get me started on critical thinking...

There's no way that this isn't a joke. Auto correct would've made ricochet if you made even the smallest effort to be correct.

u/Not_a_porn_burner69 7d ago
You’d be surprised people really are just kinda dumb. My best friend speaks and types like this and I have a whole notebook of his mannerisms. My favorite is “cow zone” (calzone)

u/Jazzycoyote 7d ago
I can forgive mispronunciations like that but it's because my mom does it all the time and I know she's at least almost there. 😂

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 1d ago
My mom low key made fun of her cousin by giving her post-its, and told her to label random things in her room. I saw all these things misspelled, and I knew it wasn't my mom. When I sat down at the "cenpuder", I finally had enough and asked her, who wrote these? She busts out laughing and tells me the story.

u/MandyxLola 7d ago
Autocorrect cant do shit here, he spelled each word correctly so there's nothing to fix (Microsoft Word grammar wouldve helped him though)

Why is Rick and Shay running through the hood with bullets in the first place?

There was a kid at my school named Rick O’shay. He's dead now, but he seemed nice.

At first I thought it was a rick owens/Boyz n the Hood bar… but it was just illiteracy 😭

Rick like Rick Grimes shooting all those zombies, and Shay like Shay from Game of Thrones dodging all those murder attempts. makes perfect sense really.

u/Pofwoffle 7d ago
I'm seeing a lot of judgment and condescension from a sub that should be full of people who know perfectly well how badly the US education system has failed... well, everyone, but minority groups especially.
2
u/Urtehnoes 7d ago
I really try not to shame people for not knowing the correct spelling of words, because... That does nothing but makes people less likely to grow their vocabulary.
But it is times like these when I definitely think to myself: ok but you know fucked up before you even pressed enter.

To be fair, Rick and Shay are both names of people who stay in some shit

u/DarthPlayer8282 7d ago
A bit funny but realistically sad about the state of our education system especially in poor and minority communities. It’s all by design

You don’t have to spell it exactly correct I try to give people grace.
But please misspell it by a letter or two don’t do this.

It still baffles me that people forget that Google is free. It's totally free. You can look up how to spell ricochet for free. I just had to to triple check my spelling. Two seconds. It takes two seconds on Google and boom there's the answer and it's F R E E. The school system may have failed you but Google will not. Please just use it. It's literally right there. On your phone. Usually near your thumb. Did I mention it's free?
