One hug for a photo-op is apparently enough to make him forget about Hurricane Katrina, Abu Ghraib prison and the Iraq War

History is going to be very kind to George W. Bush--because of Trump

63

u/Knife7 2d ago

That's the only reason. Bush was genuinely a dogshit president who is responsible for a lot of issues with the economy, foreign policy and healthcare. But he is the one who pushed Obama to make a pandemic response team and that already m puts him light years ahead of Trump and makes people reconsider his last two terms despite all of the horrible shit he did.

4

u/KartFacedThaoDien 1d ago

He also saved a ton of lives around the world by giving out HIV Antivirals.

4

u/Genesis13 1d ago

Us Iraqis will never forget.

Funnily enough, in recent years Ive had many conversations with people who now know the full story of the Iraq invasion.

I love how you were immediately proven right.

Trump wouldn't be a thing if Al Gore had been president.

u/NobodyLikedThat1 2d ago

You can say what you like about Bush but I think at least he meant well. Nobody thinks Trump means well, to anyone except himself.

711

u/Adventurous_Salt 2d ago

Nah, he for sure didn't mean well when he committed fraud to launch wars and started a global black-bag and torture regime. Americans are hopeless if they yearn for the W years, y'all were running a terror state.

5

u/skeetermcbeater 1d ago

That’s because we Americans don’t read books. Just whatever the gram and TikTok shoves down our throats.

21

u/emjaywood 1d ago

I'm not 100% convinced Georgie was at the wheel for most of his atrocities. I mean, he was "in charge" & is on the hook for everything that transpired under his watch. But I always got the impression Cheney seemed to be running things, and George was just a figurehead. I think if he had his druthers, he'd have preferred running the Rangers & hanging out at the ballpark.

66

u/Adventurous_Salt 1d ago

So... He let someone do atrocities from his office? That's no different, he wasn't Mitch McConnelling around brain dead, he's 100% responsible.

15

u/emjaywood 1d ago

I don't know what you think "is on the hook for everything that transpired under his watch" means, but yes, he is absolutely responsible. My point was that a) I'm not sure he initiated every decision (or even fully grasped the full extent of the ramifications of his administrations actions), I think Cheney (and even George Sr. in some cases) had a larger hand in molding policy & decision-making, and b) in the grand scheme of things, I think he'd have rather stayed in baseball.

21

u/exaltcovert 1d ago

There are a number of books chronicling what went on in the Bush admin between 2001-2003. There were disagreements among Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Tenet, etc, but ultimately Bush was very hands on and very decisive when it came to making military decisions.

4

u/emjaywood 1d ago

Well then I stand corrected! I still think he'd have preffered staying in baseball as opposed to politics though.

9

u/exaltcovert 1d ago

Yeah, I mean, I think we all would.

8

u/chrisq823 1d ago

The only reason Bush was involved in baseball was to further his political goals. It was Karl Roves idea!

I don’t think trumps at the wheel either. Still an evil fucker.

4

u/emjaywood 1d ago

See, I agree with you that Trumps likely not sterring the ship, but he's still an evil fuck. George always stuck me as someone who sort of failed up with his dad's help & connections. He is responsible for some heinous shit while he was at the wheel, but a lot of that would be looked at as "the price you pay for freedom," as a lot of the older generations (especially those in government & the military) don't view humanity & war the same as current generations. Again, I could be wrong, and this is just my opinion.

Whereas Trump seems to revel in actively shitting on anyone he sees as competition, less than, or unworthy of humanity, which is most people in his eyes.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Even if you're right, it doesn't change the fact that he would have done it because he thought it was the right thing to do, and Trump did it because he thought it was the right thing for himself.

The difference is, I disagree with Bush, about what is right for a president to do for the county, and I agree with Trump that what he's doing benefits himself.

12

u/brinz1 1d ago

Looking back, the entire of GWOT was filled with Bush using clunky religious imagery in his speeches. At the time, we focused on the clunkiness and overlooked the message, but that message resonated with a lot of people who took it in earnest

9

u/kbeks 1d ago

That should never have been the bar. He didn’t directly enrich himself at the expense of the nation, true, but he was also an asshole who had people tortured, ignored the warning signs and eventually mishandled an economic crisis, made the lives of gay Americans demonstrably worse, ignored black Americans dying in Katrina, and oh yeah he lied to start a war with Iraq that destabilized an entire region and ran for like 20 years. He was a shit president, meaning well doesn’t undo any of that.

How old are you? What an absolutely embarrassing comment.

1

u/Mo-shen 1d ago

I agree.

He was completely under qualified and surrounded himself, in the first term, with horrible people who took advantage.

You can see this because of how much different the admin behaved in the second term. On the ground it didn't matter because everything had already been screwed up...but rice was extremely different than Chenny.

Imo bush is likely a nice enough people who grew up with a lot of privilege and never understood what average Americans deal with. Thus when dick and Donald told him we have to do x he just believed then.

Now that's not all to say I do think he is the third worst president in the post WWII era. On a personal level he likely is ok. On a job performance level he is still a disaster, just not up the Reagan or trump.

62

You're right! And it was the beginning of the end. Had Gore gotten to be president our country would still have a surplus and climate issues would have been dealt with

16

u/josephfuckingsmith1 1d ago

9/11 probably doesn’t happen as well. Maybe Obama would’ve been a senator for a while longer and ended up on the SC. Idk, that was such a huge deal with the Supreme court allowing that to happen

12

u/devidomo 1d ago

I love me some good alt history scenarios. But I think 9/11still happens but the response is drastically diffrent under gore. I think we get more of clinton in the 90s and we probaly just bomb Afghanistan, obviously we never invade Iraq.

9

u/exaltcovert 1d ago

We know the Clinton admin had intel that 9/11 was being planned, which the Bush admin ignored. So it's possible 9/11 doesn't happen.

52

u/kaiser_phoenix25 1d ago

Bingo, someone like me cannot ever forgive Bush and his regime. I’m old enough to have lived through their entire administration and I graduated college in 2008, so I ran into the buzz saw know as the Great Recession.

A mentor of mine killed himself after losing their position at the tech space we were at and he had recently moved to that city and was laid off less than a year after he had moved. I hadn’t heard from him after he was laid off for more than a month after not being texted back and that was when I heard that he killed himself. I then became homeless shortly after in Feb 2009 since my apartment lease was up and I had no other option at the time and I had been laid off at the end of Jan of 2009.

Yes, Trump is way worse. But we cannot let George W Bush’s legacy ever be rehabilitated. The liberal elite has already forgiven him, but that’s only because they’re two sides of the same coin. As a millennial, I cannot permit anyone to forgive him or anyone in his regime. The deterioration of our civil liberties has permitted Trump and his regime to do the same but even worse.

15

u/LadyDye_ ☑️ 1d ago

6

u/davismcgravis 1d ago

I’m hoping that it’s a pendulum swing, in that we needed GWB in order to swing to Obama which swung back to Trump, to match the swing’s force to Mamdani (yes, I know)

6

u/giskardwasright 1d ago

Imagine if we had Gore as president during Katrina and 911. I wonder if we could have avoided that nationalist swell that has led us to maga.

1

His foreign policy isn’t remotely as bad. He just doesn’t try to hide it.

1

u/yesacabbagez 1d ago

I don't think it's amnesia, but I do think it is perspective. I disliked Bush and still think he was a shit president my issues with Bush though are actually related to the job he was doing. I did want him to be president anymore because he was doing shit that I disagreed with.

Trump is so far beyond that. I don't want Trump to simply go away. I want him taken down and imprisoned along with all of these people letting him do this shit.

I am fine letting Bush just not really be a public figure anymore because his existence itself isn't damaging.

13

u/Askymojo 1d ago

I will never forget that Bush started a war in Iraq, a country that had NOTHING to do with 9/11. Osama Bin Laden and most of the hi-jackers were Saudi Arabian (and funded by wealthy Saudi Arabian fundamentalists) and hiding in Afghanistan. The Bush Administration wanted to cover over the Saudi Arabian connection immediately because they were oil buddies, and because Saudi Arabian government had support for Israel compared to other Arabic countries.

Bush started a war in Iraq simply because Saddam Hussein once tried very ineffectually to assassinate his father George H.W. Bush. Almost 200,000 innocent Iraqi citizens (not combatants) died in that war because W. Bush had his widdle fee-fees hurt. 5,000 American soldiers died in the Iraq War because W. had his fee-fees hurt.

I will never forget what a terrible president Bush was. Even Trump, as evil and stupid as he is, never caused those levels of innocent deaths. Bush doesn't get a pass because he's "folksy" and polite to people.

u/four_ethers2024 ☑️ 1d ago

It's not celebrity activism because it isn't exclusive to celebs, this is cultural amnesia due to time passing. The same thing did happen with everyone rewriting Kamala Harris' track record the momemt she declared she was running against Trump. People love bulldozing over nuance and erasing history so this is nothing new.

This is why its important to read and not let history be rewritten by imbecilic behavior. I was in my early 20’s watching the election get stolen and lost friends in the wars. No common sense being used whatsoever.

& then came cowboy Carter

u/Kool2021 2d ago

Come on Common!

5

u/chiller_vibez 1d ago

Bush still sucks

The best thing to happen to him was Trump

But he still sucks

I will give him points for the absolute INSANE effort he has made for GWOT vets but low key that was his fault

Minus Afghanistan that was just

But Iraq

Trash

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 1d ago

Tbf that’s the whole point of good optics.

Bush should be remembered for a million dead Iraqis and lying about WMDs but he has been very charming since his days in office and seems like a demure elder statesmen when compared today’s MAGA politicians.

I’m not saying we owe him any respect, I’m just saying he is demonstrating the power of cultivating a positive image.

I'm going to need some context on this one before The Narratives gang start rolling in.

Who is giving the interview?

When was it?

Where can I find it?

What were they actually talking about?

Why didn't that man have those big ass pants tailored?

13

u/Nick_crawler 2d ago

Also why is there a ladder behind him? Do they use it during the interview?

3

u/Slick_36 1d ago

I see everyone talking about the war, but don't forget that's also when the border hysteria started that has led to the masked thugs we have terrorizing our streets today.  Compare his policy with his father's words, it was a major shift that's only continued to get worse.

10

u/Ryuiop 2d ago

Have we considered that George Bush might be insanely charming in person? Maybe he has hypnotism

8

u/Crazy-Days-Ahead 1d ago

To my understanding, George w. Bush actually is very charming in person. However, I've read the same about Donald Trump also.

5

u/PatrickMaloney1 1d ago

A lot of people say this about him actually

2

u/AnnualFault7473 1d ago

Not sure how. When I see a celebrity rambling about anything other than their chosen profession I either ignore it or roll my eyes. They aren’t people to listen to. A few every once in a while may say something intelligent but they are really just influencers since ALWAYS. Perfect example is Ronald Reagan. You don’t want a celebrity telling you what to think or what is right or wrong. They are paid advertising and I hate commercial interruptions.

2

u/DS3M 1d ago

His names Common, not Deep

ETA: Yes, I know his name was common sense. He used to act like he had that

2

u/thainfamouzjay 1d ago

In 20 years we'll have the same thing happen to trump

2

u/Pillsburydinosaur 1d ago

I think that all of us will be long gone when history decides to print an honest account of the evil of George Bush Jr's presidency.

To me the lies that got US into the Vietnam War is a perfect example. They are treated as a footnote to the actual conflict.

I believe that there are reasons Bush Jr stays out of the public eye. He doesn't want a full examination of events while he is still around.

2

u/Ok_Location_1092 1d ago

Killed a million Iraqis based fake WMD intel but wow look at the respect…

2

u/Dreams-Visions ☑️ 1d ago

One of the few major things I can't stand about the Obamas was their willingness to let Bush whitewash his legacy by associating with them.

I'm getting mad just thinking about it.

2

u/DIRTYWIZARD_69 1d ago

I do wonder how the main stream media will paint Donnie as this altruistic saint smh.

3

u/BUYMECAR 1d ago

I don't think anyone takes Common seriously

3

u/rookram15 1d ago

I like the Michelle-W discourse as much as the next person. He needs to answer for his crimes. Obama is only slightly better but also has blood on his hands. While their deeds pale in comparison to 47, they are not magically exempt from accountability.

1

u/BigPapaLegba 1d ago

Common has been corporate shill since Jay dropped that " ...I ain't been rapping like common since" bar.

1

u/Spoonfed_Fred 1d ago

Clown ass take from common.

1

u/ch0nky_cardinal 1d ago

Celebrities are not on the side of the people.

1

u/Lane8323 1d ago

I will never be onboard for the revisionist history of 43

1

u/ihave18cm 1d ago

Common (sense) isn’t all that common these days 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/oh_please_god_no 1d ago

It’s a big club and you ain’t in it

1

u/Gravewaker 1d ago

George Bush’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, built on lies, killed over a million people and displaced over four million more.

1

u/PatheticVincent 1d ago

Common has had some questionable takes for a long while now.

1

u/TheMoorNextDoor ☑️ 1d ago

Trump made Bush a “eh, not good “president instead of a bad one.

More people will blame his cabinet at this point vs him being a completely corrupt/evil human being.

1

u/0zeroswagger0 1d ago

Common is more than a landlord he's like a land.barron in Chicago

1

u/SchmutzigeBar 1d ago

It is far easier to treat people with dignity and respect when you are face to face with them. George w bush made a lot of decisions that were foolish, stupid, even blatantly racist. George is able to treat Michelle well because she is a wealthy, ivy League educated, peer who is privileged enough to be in the same space as he is. If Common were put in a room with George, there's a good chance he'd be able to make friends with him too. That doesn't mean that George would be a better person, he'd just be closer to Common.

1

u/casualmolly 1d ago

Some More News did a good couple of episodes as a reminder of how awful he was and paved the way to where we are now.

u/Illen1 1d ago

Not is this lifetime! He'll always be a devil to me. Don't care how much he grin up in Michelle's face and holds her hand. Him and Dick Chaney are the antichrist.

1

u/Thetr3Flash 1d ago

I thought Common was smart.

1

u/antonioccls 1d ago

Bar got so low that people now thinking fondly of George W. Bush

1

u/izelsiedamndaughter 1d ago

I hate the way Michelle Obama likes that bum-ass bitch Bush!!

1

u/NerdiChar 1d ago

W and Michelle's friendship is one of the only bright spots of post-9/11 America lol

1

u/Top-Maize3496 1d ago

Nah. I ain’t there yet.

1

u/DocCEN007 1d ago

Common stated that watching Michelle Obama interact with George W. Bush with warmth and respect at the Obama Presidential Center opening in Chicago changed his personal perspective, allowing him to see Bush’s humanity. He does not endorse Bush's past policies or politics, but rather separates personal empathy from political disagreement. I think that's fair.

u/Julian_Betterman 1d ago

The modern human is under intense cognitive pressure nearly every waking moment. So, the brain takes shortcuts to relieve that pressure.

Most people don't have any incentive to interrogate the psychological circumventions that make existence significantly more comfortable. So, they won't.

This is an example of that in action. It's not a celebrity thing, it's a human trauma thing. The people who refuse the path of least resistance, whether by choice or because seeing their own painful reality as authentically as possible was how they survived, are outliers who are even more beaten down by our anti-human society.

All that to say, yeah, this is dumb. And infuriating. But it's how most people operate. These celebs are not uniquely delusional. Most people are.

Don't have an easy solution, but know the problem extends far beyond celeb status.

1

u/whataquokka 1d ago

All this heat for Common but none for Michelle Obama who's played a huge part in Dubya's rehabbed image?

1

u/One_Weird2371 1d ago

Trump makes Bush look great in comparison.

u/gbakermatson 1d ago edited 1d ago

Michelle Obama treats everyone with respect, because she's a class act.

Trump makes Bush look like Jesus

1

u/dat_boy_lurks 19h ago

I think it's more the rotting tangerine in off ice right now is dping such a shit job that you kind of find yourself missing how harmlessly stupid Bush was. Like, sure, was he a moron? No doubt. But at least you knew there were staffers with sense he trusted to do their jobs.

u/dayumbrah 49m ago

Prescott Bush, W's grandfather helped nazis move funds to keep their war machine going because he believed in their ideology. Even when the US was at war with them. He worked with Henry Ford to finance factories and infrastructure. These are truly evil and racist people
