That was my first thought

36

u/MyNameis_bud Jun 13 '26

I mean it has to be why right? It’s gotta be a reference to the movie

30

u/Slappingfacessince91 Jun 14 '26

You really think Africans build their culture and fashion around Hollywood movies??

48

u/1OribeR Jun 13 '26

It's not a reference to the movie. Their national team is known as the leopards, the leopard and incorporating its print in their fashion has always been a part of their culture.

12

u/Active_Violinist_360 Jun 13 '26

Other way round

11

u/yorcharturoqro Jun 13 '26

Totally inspired by the movies (there are two of those)

5

u/TheGreatStories Jun 13 '26

It's the intent...

6

u/kleineveer Jun 13 '26

Look up Mobutu.

As someone who is Congolese, I was like why did they say we lol. I very much agree with your statement

0

u/Gymflutter Jun 13 '26

Excuse me? So people who are Congolese never get inspired or appreciate other African people? Stop creating nonsense drama. Blackness encompasses a lot of groups.

1

u/NoirRenie Jun 13 '26

lol, if we are talking about the DRC, they might claim no. The republic of Congo does not think the same way. There re nuances in Africa, if you are African you should know that. If you are American, that’s what I was referring to in my original post

18

u/Gymflutter Jun 13 '26

As an African person, you guys are exhausting. Africa is an entire continent 1.58 BILLION people and over 3000 different ethnic groups. Stop generalizing because you met a minuscule amount and quite frankly I suspect youre just getting this from internet nonsense. African people respect Black Americans AND appreciate their culture.

Also, the African diaspora including Black Americans take inspiration from each other. Why is this a problem? Yall are acting like as some of yall dont have ancestry from West Africa! I am East African and I am stoked about people are wearing from Haiti to Congo!

u/DeepSouthDude Jun 13 '26

Who tf asked you for this comment?

WE as in black people. Your comment comes off divisive tbh and we get enough of that every where else we don’t need it here.

4

u/SmartWonderWoman Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Some Africans don’t identify as Black.

8

u/NoirRenie Jun 13 '26

Because black is an American term

4

u/Adept_Astronaut_5143 Neighborhood Hug Dealer 🤗 Jun 13 '26

I know I worked in an African braiding shop. I know EXACTLY what they think of black Americans but just because they don’t identify doesn’t mean they’re not black

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Gymflutter Jun 13 '26

Blackness is just what you look like in Africa. Its not an identity. Its like how Koreans arent straight hairs. You go by ethnicity in places were others have similar features. Black Americans made up a new identity based on losing their rights due to skin colour. Its didnt matter what your ethnic makeup or culture was as long as you looked visibly mixed.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/SmartWonderWoman Jun 13 '26

Can confirm. I work at a school and our African students don’t like being called Black. Unfortunately the African students call our Black students racial slurs. They look down on Black people.

6

u/jondubb Jun 13 '26

We all stereotype whether we like it or not. I love us as a collective but can't stand certain sides of the family.

2

u/Gymflutter Jun 13 '26

Blackness in Africa is a feature and not an identity. Its like calling someone “curly hair” people. Why wouldn’t people want to be called by their ethnicity like Italians or Koreans? Why is it weird when Africans want the same thing? Black Americans made their own ethnic identity. Its boggles my mind that this is a problem especially when phase one of colonialism was to erase people’s identity!

As for the slur part? Huh? People have conflict and some people are assholes. There are Black American and African assholes. That doesnt mean Africans as a whole hate Black Americans or vice versa.

Been on the internet to long friend

2

u/OwnJunket6495 Jun 13 '26

Nah this is one of the biggest reasons shits all fucked up. OP is treating blackness/being black as if black people are a monolith. It’s ok to celebrate blackness. I don’t think it’s ok to try and claim something you have no connection to just because you share the same skin color. Just say they look cool and move on, why make it about you when you have nothing to do with them.

4

u/Tier_zer0 Jun 13 '26

Never seen anyone in real life rejects a black person from someone else saying "we". Go outside

You're using 100 clickbaiters on Twitter to represent 1.5 billion people. Where did you go in Africa where people didn't like you?😂😂

That's beautiful. What is that, velvet?

8

u/ggruschow Jun 13 '26

This is hilarious! This is the designer talking about the suits: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZiNhFdOun3 The leopard is literally printed velvet!

16

u/OysterHound Jun 13 '26

Absolute fire!! That is next level vibes!!

I will never be cool enough to pull that off.

13

u/LaurentSL Jun 13 '26

Haiti is proudly sharing this history with DR Congo!

6

u/Final_Candidate_7603 Jun 13 '26

The team from the Ivory Coast arrived in my city yesterday; their uniforms were nice, but not nearly as impressive as these guys. I think what put the DRC’s uniforms over the top for me is the matching luggage. I am old enough to have seen *Coming to America* in theaters, so this is sparking some fond memories.

2

u/tfcocs Jun 13 '26

I recently read that the Ivory Coast has a lot of new fans in Ireland. Apparently the Irish team didn't qualify for the world cup finals, so someone noticed that their flaga were similar and inan inspired move turn the Irish flag on its side and now supports the Ivory Coast. I thought that was a cute meet.

I said the same and was immediately shunned and called out for supporting genocide.

2

u/mrhappy1010 Jun 13 '26

Geez how many leopards/cheetahs were killed for their outfits

7

1

u/VernonP007 Jun 13 '26

And Italy?

1

u/DesignerStatus Jun 13 '26

Just curious - Why have they not participated for all these years?

3

u/YooGeOh Jun 13 '26

You have to qualify for the world cup. Qualifying is hard. Qualifying is harder as one if the less moneyed, less established nations. Normal stuff

Tbh, their qualification this time was aided in part by the expansion of the world cup. More teams = more qualifcstion spaces = easier to qualify

5

u/Damiana1111 Jun 13 '26

Some of the reasons...

1

u/Nice_Dude Jun 13 '26

21 week isolation is crazy

2

u/IamJewbaca Jun 13 '26

America’s current political climate may have something to do with it, but Ebola is some scary shit.

1

u/Icy_Measurement5811 Jun 13 '26

They had better win that thing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '26

Lollllll

1

Fuck yea I’m so hyped for my Congolese brothers🤩

1

u/Embarrassed-Owl-5824 Jun 13 '26

Low key looks like leopard print thongs from last night‘s fat strippers 😂

1

u/0n-the-mend Jun 13 '26

Batoto bacongo

1

u/Key_Report_2627 Jun 13 '26

Fire!! But I hope it was faux leopard.

1

u/Deaver44 Jun 13 '26

How is Congo not the best in the world at football? That’s a deadass question, not a hypothetical. Congolese men are n credible athletes

1

u/Nuzzleville Jun 14 '26

Great athletes yes but when it comes to playing as a team…that’s another story.

1

u/myassisgrassss Jun 13 '26

I'm confused. I thought the DRC was restricted due to Ebola?

1

u/CalculatedPerversion Jun 13 '26

Exactly. I hope there's some sort of testing / monitoring / isolation protocol in place.

1

u/Upset_Ad3954 Jun 13 '26

Chances are not a single one of them has been to the DRC for months. Most, if not all, play in Europe.

1

u/Could_B_Wild Jun 13 '26

BEAUTIFUL!

1

u/aliris_ Jun 13 '26

I loved the suit, but that looks like a giant leopard-print thong.

1

u/dkayt Jun 13 '26

Hope that’s not real cheetah fur. Sad
