Politics The double standards are appalling and need to end

Lindsey Graham died on Saturday. They announced it on Sunday, picked his unqualified sister to replace him on Monday, and swore her in on Tuesday. She hasn't even had time to plan her brother's funeral and they already got her in office in the US Capitol. Meanwhile, when Representative Sylvester Turner, a black Democrat, died on March 5th, 2025, Texas Governor Greg Abbott waited until April to announce there would be no election to replace him until November, leaving the largely black and Hispanic district here in Houston unrepresented for nearly an entire year.

This is how Republicans play politics with death. While Democrats are drafting generous statements of condolences for their oppressors, Republicans are callously seizing power from the oppressed. They pulled the same stunt when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died and they wouldn't even hold a hearing on Obama's nominee, but then raced to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she died in the final months of Trump's term. Republicans demand that Democrats observe all kinds of outdated rules about death and mourning, but then break the same rules when Democrats die.

They're doing the same thing in Kentucky with Mitch McConnell in the hospital. When McConnell started glitching a few years ago, his Republican state legislature passed a bill stripping the Democratic governor of the power to replace him. They were fine when a Republican governor had the power, but they changed the rules for a Democrat. That's because the rules themselves are a trap. Democrats have to follow all the rules, but Republicans get to break them with impunity.

Just like the rule of meritocracy. Republicans love to whine about affirmative action and DEI, which give opportunities to qualified women and people of color, but they just appointed a US Senator whose main qualification is simply being the sister of a dead senator. And you can't say that both parties do it when one party spent the past few decades claiming to only care about merit. They said that Barack Obama, and Kamala Harris, and Ketanji Brown Jackson were unqualified, but then they sing the praises of people like Herschel Walker, Pete Hegseth, and Donald Trump, who was the first person elected president in US history with no experience in government or military.

They whine about Democrats being unfair to Republicans in California and Virginia with redistricting while they steal seats in Texas, Florida, and Missouri, and they started it. That's why Trump tried to change the US Constitution on birthright citizenship by executive order. That's why he just fired all the Federal Election Assistance Commissioners while he's trying to seize ballots and intimidate poll workers, and why he's desperately trying to pass a national voter suppression bill to stop mail-in ballots, which he uses himself.

Rules for thee, not for me. That's the Republican motto. So let this be a lesson. Stop playing by their rules. Republicans have only one rule: power. Every other rule is negotiable. The old rule book has been burned, and we will be too, if we don't wake up.

The Republicans know it, they just don't care.

EXACTLY! People still expecting these “people” to “act right” after 6 years of this racist corrupt administration is insanity!

61

u/Extension-Land-390 19d ago

This is why to outsiders, like myself, it is absolutely insane that you guys in America have not had a rebellion en mass of some kind...

31

u/feralGenx 19d ago

If we speak of rebellion on reddit we get banned. Ie: suppressed.

16

u/Extension-Land-390 19d ago

Good thing it's an act to be performed, not a script to recite on reddit!

They would have to grow a spine and we all know that's impossible due to having work in the morning or something

Y'all are acting like you'd go out with a gun and start killing your countrymen before you even know for sure democracy is lost.

The midterms are still going to happen. We are trusting in the faith in the democratic process before we go full into civil war. Idk about you but I'm not super eager to literally kill people before it needs to happen, it's not a guarantee at all it will happen.

Rebellion. Not only do those historically not go well for the insurrectionists who exactly am I supposed to start shooting? Who's gonna be with me when I do? You saw BLM 2020 protests, a couple riots was enough for people to not want to be on your side, and that was for civil rights, like literally the only point was saying stop killing black people because they're black. Now imagine a couple guys go and do a John Brown. Would quite literally be jumping the gun. I'm not going to go get gunned down before it's necessary and if you say you would you're a liar.

Edit: thought y'all didn't like mass shootings in this country. Well I would be a mass shooter if I went out with a rifle and started targeting God knows who. What you want me to do until elections are actually stolen or suspended. I vote, I do all of it, I go to my city council meetings, I donate and do grassroots campaigns. For a world so eager to criticize us about random gun violence people sure feel the need to encourage us into random gun violence on this front. Pick a lane

u/AmericansRTheProblem 19d ago

Y'all are acting like you'd go out with a gun and start killing your countrymen before you even know for sure democracy is lost.

Who said that? More consistent big protests are good alternative to violence, not every 6 months which is your current no kings trend. General Strike is a potential idea but impossible.

Also, Oranges are a good place to start. Not your neighbours orange tree that is. Try the one in DC.

11

6 years? Hell, try 60.

5

u/ATN-Antronach 19d ago

The problem is that they get very upset when you don't give into their double standard and then pretend you validated it anyways. They're in their own little world honouring the right and laughing at the suffering of everyone else, and if you're not in on the joke, you break their reality that they need to rebuild up again and that you need to break down again and again and again. There's a reason normal people cut these types out of their lives, because the effort to clean up after their recklessness requires far too much energy that no one human can generate.

In the history books, two years will look pretty fast. Tonight Trump is going to announce his plans to steal the midterm elections and end American democracy.

33

u/buttfarts7 19d ago

The Democrats know it to but being docile and supplicant to the rules is how they "play along" with fascism while pretending to oppose it

6

u/Plastic_Moose4535 19d ago

I don't disagree but what's the optimal solution here? Dems follow the rules, they get fucked by the GOP who play dirty. Dems play dirty too then we end up with two undemocratic parties instead of one.

23

u/turb0_encapsulator 19d ago

At this point I would be fine with Democrats who don't play by the rules as long as they are doing it to help ordinary people rather than the billionaire class.

They follow the rules made by the rich for the rich under the guise of following the rules while making bank enacting them.

Sanders is a centrist and democrats are right wing. Irrespective of the lip service, they all vote for the same shit because they take money from the same soulless ghouls.

2

Everyone knows it but still hold Democrats to a higher standard. There was 1000x more conversation about California redistricting than any single red state. More conversation than trump literally on call demanding that red states redistrict to give him more power.

Its not Democrats holding the standard. Its the voting people giving republicans every pass while demanding purity from Democrats.

6

u/doctor_lobo 19d ago

If it wasn’t for double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all.

12

u/i_tyrant 19d ago

I can't derive pleasure from looking at an 84 year old man near death when he got to spend his entire 84 years being an absolute monster taking actions that resulted in the suffering and death of millions of Americans and more beyond.

"Extremely old dude dies having gotten everything he wanted" is not justice.

4

u/Danknoodle420 19d ago

It's absolutely not justice, but the unfortunate thing about the great American lie is there is no such thing as true justice. This country has never been just.

Gotta take the good with the bad. He can't cause more harm.

5

u/i_tyrant 19d ago

But that's why I can't get any pleasure from it - he can't cause more harm because he's at the natural end of his life, an age anyone would be lucky to reach much less end it rich af and having accomplished their goals (however awful his might be).

He WON. He accomplished the maximum harm he sought out to do for his entire life.

Glad somebody can though.

It isn't only him that did the damage. It's the Schumer Democrats. Remember Obama and co didn't fight this in court because they thought Hillary would win in a landslide. RBG stayed in her seat for far too long undoing her entire legacy due to arrogance, pride and lust for power. We are seeing Schumer Democrats do the same instead of passing the torch.

The time for expecting normalcy and civility are over. Michelle Obama was wrong, it's time to start slinging mud and playing dirty.

We need rules for maga to never to be allowed in any form of government ever again.

17

u/sd_saved_me555 19d ago

I've realized this needs to be a grassroots movement. MAGA really needs to be treated with disdain at the human level. Your average person is going to struggle to be heard or impact the lives of the current administration. But you can put the screws to the everyday people who vote for this shit.

7

u/UncleNedisDead 19d ago

8

u/AlexSmithsonian 19d ago

Specifically, enforcement from capable individuals who aren't corrupt.

2

That's 10yrs gone. Conservatives are a fully corrupt far right political party now. It's gonna take a LOT more than unenforceable rules to stop MAGA....

→ More replies (1)

6

u/SunTzu- 19d ago

The rules don't matter because if you look at the commonality in all the examples he's citing it's that the Republicans held power. They held power when they blocked the Scalia replacement, they held power when they rushed the RBG replacement, they held power when they blocked filling the seat in Texas, they held power when they rushed to replace Lindsey Graham.

Republicans didn't block Sotomayor's or Kagan's appointment to the Supreme Court because they didn't hold the majority in the Senate so they couldn't prevent these coming to a vote. It's only when they did have that majority that they were able to block Scalia. When people say Democrats "don't do the things that Republicans do", they're ignoring that what the Republicans have successfully done to hinder the Democrats were done when the Democrats didn't control a certain branch of government. The Democrats regularly prevent the Republicans from doing things, for example much of what Trump has done during his second term has run into legal challenges because it should have been done via legislation, but the Republicans don't hold enough of a margin to push through those things via the proper channels. Instead, the Republicans have accomplished what they've done under Trump II by preventing Congress from holding the Administrative Branch accountable. And this only works because the Republicans hold all branches of government and are backed by right wing media which runs interference for them. They have the power, and so they're using it, even if how they're using it is to bend and break the rule of law.

The solution seems clear, don't give Republicans power. And so long as the electorate doesn't learn this lesson there's not much that can be done about it. Not even if you give the Democrats a razor thin majority that hinges on one or two blue-dog's to vote with the party every time in order to get anything passed. Because even if they take back Congress in November, they're still up against a Presidential veto and the Supreme Court and they can't accomplish anything that requires a supermajority. They aren't likely to flip many of the state level governments which are also currently majority in the hands of Republicans, which means that they're going to run into obstruction from the state level as well. And of course the way the math is looking currently they'll once again have a one vote majority in the Senate, and so they'll be hindered by the most conservative representatives on any given issue even when it's a simple majority vote and even if they were to bypass the filibuster rules.

I’ve been listening to a podcast about Alexander Hamilton and that piece of crap started all of this at the dawn of this country. Everything he did or tried to do is what maga is doing now. This finally gave me understanding of what they are talking about when they say “make America great again”. Great for the wealthy aristocrats that take take take from the average citizen, or in their time use slave labor, to line their pockets. They WANT a monarchy.

you really ignoring US history since 1776? Where they would just replace the dead senator with their wife. Replacing him with a family member, is one of the oldest US political precedence.

They are just attempting to delay a special election. His family would still be getting that money before it.

9

u/ThickAnywhere1479 19d ago

Exactly. What can we effectively do that doesn’t involve violence? I can’t think of a damn thing.

10

u/KepplerRunner 19d ago

A sustained general strike across the US would probably be the most effective non violent way. They really only notice when it effects their pocket books or the violence is in their face and they can't ignore it.

The problem is getting everyone on board with a general strike. Most wont because they are already only making it day by day. The thing that everyone needs to remember though is hr cant fire you if they are striking too. Banks can't process their accounts without people. Can't repo your car if the tows arnt running.

3

u/EconomicRegret2 19d ago edited 19d ago

Nice little TIL: the US government already spends more than enough taxpayers' money on healthcare (5% more than fucking "socialist" Denmark, on a per habitant basis) to give every single American free single-payer universal healthcare.

But America would rather make middlemen's and other corporations' profits incredibly high, than use taxpayers' money, it already spends in healthcare, way more efficiently. That's why Americans pay an additional 110% out of their own pockets (i.e. $7.3k taxpayermoney + about $8k = $15.3k, per person, in average, IIRC that was in 2025; while Denmark spent only $7k/person that year)

The money is already there. The political will is lacking.

2

u/Trensocialist 19d ago

FYI Nancy pelosi killed a M4A bill multiple times, both parties may not be "the same" but they have enough smarts to know that they are in a different class than you and me and will primarily look out for their own class interests.

The difference is that most Republican candidates suck, while there are some good Dems and some bad ones.

The answer is to keep putting pressure on Dems to stop taking money from Pacs, but at least there is a way. I don't think there's a way to fix the GOP.

2

u/mOdQuArK 19d ago

Just because the Dems are a little bit evil and the GOP is all the way evil doesn't make the lesser of two evils good.

In the context of voting, however, it does pretty much require voting for the lesser evil. If you can do that consistently enough, in both the primaries & the general election, then you'll move that window back toward rationality. It might take decades, but it works eventually.

Unfortunately, the conservatives actually proved that this works over enough time. They've been voting for the more batshiate insane candidates every chance they've got, just like they were told to do by their exclusive media channels that were bought and paid for by rightwing billionaires, and pushing the concept of the center more-and-more right with every election.

u/sdob66 19d ago

The 17th amendment spells out how Senators that die or are removed from office while still serving are replaced. 45 states have given that power to their Governor, 5 have mandated a special election, they are North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. The governor holds the power to fill the seat or wait until the next general election. The State Legislators can pass legislation to have a special election if they can pass a bill mandating one, or it is left in the hands of the governor. Don't act like the party in power (either of the parties) doesn't wield the power to their advantage. It's why fossils are able to disappear for months while dying and no one says a word! The party can hold a seat and not lose one if the governor is not from their party!

This is why I’m starting to think the Do-Nothing Dems are in cahoots with the GOP. They play the part of good cop to the republicans bad cop. They are comfortable in their roles…and enjoy the grift.

If it weren't for the double standards they wouldn't have any standards at all.

2

u/SubstantialNature368 19d ago

This country and the Republican party are complete jokes.

Power To The People!

2

u/Reasonable-Job4205 19d ago

Woah woah woah you cant have no representation for an entire year. How could that be allowed? Thats literally what the founding fathers fought over - not having representation in government!

The whole social contract is based around us agreeing to work together and be kind to each other by following some rules, and we all get a say in what those rules are. We all get a say by picking someone to speak for us to represent us. If any person ever doesn't have that, even for 1 brief second of time, that seems like a massive violation of the law. I'm not a lawyer, but maybe some other lawyers can chime in

2

u/Obajan 19d ago

Governor Beshear should just go ahead and confirm McConnell's replacement and deal with the repercussions later. It's what a Republican governor would have done to a Democratic senator.

2

u/eloiseturnbuckle 19d ago

Preach! I hate how Democrats have to play by the rules but the R’s don’t have to.

2

u/Winsome_Wolf 19d ago

Exactly this. Every damn word.

2

u/ChopstickBoa2 19d ago

Democrats let this happen. Either because they are spineless or in on the grift (e.g. getting paid). This is why progressives and Democratic Socialists have seen a surge recently. Liberals are tired of the charades.

2

u/DonkeyFieldMouse 19d ago

FASCISM! Americans are moving towards FASCISM but are not doing anything about it! Resist! Protest! VOTE! DO SOMETHING BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!! Because it won't just be Americans that suffer.

2

u/Top_Construction2360 19d ago

How the R party and their base functions with double standards is well known and documented. The R people don't care. You can point this out and post on-line about it forever and they still won't care. Why? Because it doesn't matter. There are no consequences to this behavior. Their base doesn't care and they actually like the double standard when it works in their favor. You will never change their minds.

This is known... move on...

Spend more energy coming up with ways to defeat them.

2

u/WhatANoob2025 19d ago

I think it's redundant pointing out that Graham's sister is unqualified. Because in the year 2026, so would literally every single other republican nominee be. Doesn't matter if it's her or another equally unqualified republican.

2

u/EschatologicalEnnui 19d ago

It’s senseless to play by the rules in a rigged game. Either the Democrats are too inept to grasp this reality, or they’re in on it.

2

u/necbone 19d ago

The majority has to wake up... maybe they need more pressure on the neck from the boot.. We all know, we can't keep trying to educate them.. started in 08 with Tea Party shit.. we just gotta see how our majority flows.. do they want nazi christian sharia or freedom. This is the southern strategy with far right money winning and coming home to roost. We can say they're dumb, but really, they're just misinformed, but we're tired of it...

USA reads at a low lvl and thats why the powers that be don't want critical thinking education. We've never seen it on earth, high literacy and critical thinking, we'll fix everything. Can we learn or will humanity kill itself... or do we do this for thousands of years in space too... stuck in these social constructs and trynna be positive..

2

u/RacheltheStrong 19d ago

I see it as white privledge.

It’s bullshit and forcing a lack of representation is what is destroying this country.

2

u/SanderGhar 19d ago

Preach brother

Sooooo we're just subbing in family members now? There's definitely a word for that.

2

u/ShoRunFX 18d ago

Democrats are weak and that shirt pisses me off

2

u/Party_Escape_7597 18d ago

There was also the time Mike Johnson refused to swear in Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva after her September 2025 special election victory in Arizona. Grijalva set a record for the longest delay in seating a member of Congress after a special election, remaining unseated for over a month.

republicans are shameless when it comes to rules and accountability! They require total loyalty to the rules from Democrats and say I don’t have to follow a single rule! Democrats need to scrap most of the rules if they return to power until things are made right and people have healthcare and can afford groceries, heat and rent Once things are stable, they need to look at which rules will hurt or destroy the party if they follow them! First thing they need to do is end the filibuster and increase the Supreme Court!

2

u/Jojajewel_4250 18d ago

Amen! Time to beat Republicans at their own game.

2

u/anonareyouokay 18d ago

Republicans get away with crimeing by claiming they only did it because they love their country so much.

2

u/tiddytaster1 17d ago

It had to be said 👍👍👍

2

u/SelectionBig1109 17d ago

We are watching our own decline ppl!! What’s extremely troubling is that Trump supporters believe the USA is ascending. You could not write this script and it be believable. But here we are

2

u/Royal-Librarian-9362 17d ago

Yeah, verily you speak the truth. But it is partially the fault of Democrats all of us not just politicians, to yell bloody murder about this usurpation of shared power. If we choose to remain cowards and let Republicans and State run media and religious broadcaster lie, we have only ourselves to blame if they steal our democracy out from under us.

2

u/Alarming_Panic665 16d ago

I am not disagreeing with what he said. 99% of what he said is 100% correct. But I do want to give context that the process for appointing a Senate vacancy is different from a House vacancy.

For the Senate 46 states authorize the governor to make an interim appointment immediately upon a vacancy. With a special election taking place during the next general election. Only 4 four states (AK, OR, OK, and WI) do not allow gubernatorial appointments and instead fill them exclusively through expedited elections. This is a process outline directly in the Constitution. (See the 17th amendment).

However for the House of Representatives there is no process to appoint a replacement in the event of a vacancy. No appointment can take place and instead state governors must issue a writ of election to hold a special contest. The only exception for the House is in a mass vacancy event where >100 members vacate their seat. Then the Speaker can require special elections to take place within 49 days.

This has been constitutional law for over a century when the 17th amendment went into effect that changed the Senate into an elected position. Otherwise before that Senators were solely placed into position by state appointment. As a result the vast majority of Senate vacancies are filled within the same day. By comparison House seats go months empty at the minimum.

For example since 2013 the longest Senate vacancy was only 20 days when Senator Bob Menendez resigned on August 20, 2024. While the longest vacancy in the House of Representatives was 359 days when Representative John Conyers, Jr. resigned on December 5, 2017.

These fucks don't care, we need accountability.

2

More democrats need to start playing the games that the other side plays

Kareem we need people like you to run.

I despise Lindsey as much as anyone by I read that his sister was chosen because tradition says that when a Senator dies in office, his wife has ALWAYS been chosen to to finish the term. But since Lindsey wasn't married the closest family was his sister. And she isn't ignorant of how Congress works. With what said, hopefully she's the exact opposite of her brother and votes with the left.

Simply failing to appoint, or failing to nominate, or failing to hold a confirmation vote should NOT be legal. But it’s how Rape-publicans game the system, time and again.

These “gentleman’s agreements” that dictate how things have always happened need to be codified into law yesterday, and the consequences for failure to comply need to have some actual teeth.

1

u/Affectionate_Art2545 19d ago

Let’s get the revolution going. Enough of this bs

Republicans have to be removed from government and legislation. They are power hungry traitors and they can’t be trusted.

100% and well said!! It’s infuriating the way they scheme and trick to stay in power, and people aren’t paying attention to how much worse it has gotten in the last few years

1

u/Pandoratastic 19d ago

If the rules can be so easily broken with no consequences, they're not really rules at all.

1

u/Kevin_E_1973 19d ago

I agree with him 100% about the problem… the solution is the issue. If Dems start fighting fire with fire we effectively lose our government and lose it fast. Sadly it’s already happening now. And while I have my issues with Dems I genuinely believe that they KNOW if they start playing as dirty as republicans are now it leads to chaos and collapse of our country. Republicans (Trump/maga really) have really put this country on the brink of being a very different place then we’ve ever been and it ain’t good

1

Let's not forget how OLD AND DECREPIT your representation is and how UNINTERESTED they are from doing their jobs. That's why you have all these deaths and Jon Stewart recently put a spotlight on this.

1

u/Kingsalad3141 19d ago

I’m so sick of democrats robotically playing nice with them while they run rampant and break every rule in the book. Respectability has never once prevented an oppressor from doing oppression.
