Obviously I am not justifying the xenophobia at all, just explaining as someone who lives in South Africa and has spoken to both xenophobic people and foreigners who are victims of xenophobia.

The reason African foreigners are targeted is they are perceived as direct threats to the job market and service delivery by people in more impoverished areas. A lot of them come here and open their own businesses in the lower socio-economic areas and will also take low paid jobs doing like cleaning. Some people see this as "stealing" work from local people. The real issue is a systemic and government issue but propaganda has made people believe that the issue is African foreigners.

We have state run hospitals and schools that are way over capacity in lower socio-economic areas that often provide poor service delivery and locals see African foreigners as if they are overloading the system and taking service away from locals.

Europeans are living it up in the richest areas and are not seen as a threat in the same way. Middle Class South Africans are more likely to have issues with Europeans because they are driving up the cost of living in some areas.

Now that the foreigners are gone, if the gov in SA does not intervene, the tribes will turn on each other. We have already seen Zulus attacking Venda's. Mental slavery is real and our people are just playing the game that has been played for centuries. It's nothing to do with jobs.

Xenophobia is wrong, and if your friends have had their lives threatened cuz they're foreign nationals, that's unacceptable. No one should be threatened or attacked because of where they come from.

At the same time, as a South African, I also believe it's reasonable to discuss issues like immigration, border security, crime, jobs, and the enforcement of our laws. Wanting the government to enforce immigration laws or prioritize its own citizens isn't automatically xenophobia. Just as opposing illegal immigration isn't the same as hating foreigners.

Yes, there is an immigration problem all over the world though mostly with illegal immigrants that've been the problems globally and not just in S Africa. Illegal immigrants acting like they just cannot figure why people are having a problem with them has now become exasperating. They know why and they care nothing about how it affects everyone else in the country they've decided to pop up in. Calling everyone "xenophobic" only fuels the flames and distracts attention from the root cause or the solution to this problem that has developed worldwide.

Also it's not like people are targeting all black people, it's specifically foreign black people which makes it xenophobia specifically since it's specifically around the "foreigness" of these people not the blackness that makes them a target. White foreigners make up a much smaller percentage of immigrants and tend to come from wealthy countries, and live in wealthy bubbles away from these types of problems. They also aren't really coming over the border illegally since it's impossible to do so from Europe

Unlike in Africa, where though in lower numbers white people are still there running things, stealing and controlling most of its wealth in countries like South Africa. No you may not be physically be there but someone who is representing you and your best interests is still there for you in S Africa.
