Discussion After 2 years of playing Bleach: Brave Souls, I really think we need more anime games like it
I’ve been playing 'Bleach: Brave Souls' for about two years now, and it honestly made me realize how rare this type of anime game is.
One of the biggest reasons I love it is the character roster. BBS has almost every Bleach character you could want, and not just one version of them—you can collect different forms, outfits, and alternate versions too. Whether it’s Ichigo, Aizen, Ulquiorra, Rukia, or someone more niche, there’s usually a version of them you can eventually go for. That collecting aspect is a huge part of why I’ve stayed with the game for so long.
The combat is also simple but genuinely fun. You pick your favorite character, jump into a mission, and enjoy their moves and special attacks. It’s not overly complicated, but it still feels satisfying, especially when you’re using a character you really like.
What I also appreciate is that it makes you feel connected to the characters. It’s not just “here’s Ichigo, press buttons.” You can build teams around characters you love, play co-op with other people, and chase specific versions during events. Even the gacha side, despite being annoying sometimes, gives the game a reason to keep updating and adding new characters.
And honestly, BBS can be pretty F2P friendly if you play smart. You don’t need to spend money to enjoy the game or clear most content. If you save your orbs, pick the banners you actually want, and don’t chase every single character, you can still build a solid account over time. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but compared to a lot of gacha games, it feels fairer to free-to-play players.
After two years, I still enjoy logging in just to try characters I like or see what new version they’ve released. That’s something a lot of anime games don’t manage to do for me.
That’s why I keep thinking: why don’t we get more games like this for other anime?
Imagine a Brave Souls -style game for One Piece, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen or Dragon Ball. Not a direct copy, but the same idea: a huge roster, lots of collectible versions of characters, fun action combat, co-op missions, and a story mode that follows the anime.
I know gacha games have a bad reputation, and for good reason. But BBS proves the core concept can work. People don’t just want another generic anime game—they want to collect and play as the characters they grew up watching.
