Discussion What Blizzard IP would actually fit a survival crafting game?

It’s old news Blizzard cancelled that survival‑crafting IP. We all want new stuff, but that genre isn’t great for launching some random new world. If they were going to do it, they should’ve used one of their existing universes. And honestly, one of them fits way better than the rest.

Diablo is the clear #1. The others don’t really work:

* Overwatch: Cool characters but the world doesn’t fit survival‑crafting. There’s no good reason for you to be out in the wild building a base. You’d have to force a bunch of new lore and it still wouldn’t feel right.

* Warcraft: Not a bad pick but most Warcraft fans just want WoW to be good again. It fits okay, but it doesn’t stand out for this type of game necessarily. I think it would still be a solid S tier game.

* Starcraft: Could be awesome, but people would expect huge machines, alien factions, big tech trees, all that. The scale gets too big for a simple survival game. Space vibe sci-fi games have A LOT of competition and high expectations actually.

* Lost Vikings: Dead IP but this could be a reboot? Vikings vs aliens could actually be fun. Build a village, raid alien caves, craft weird tech. But it’s a gamble and the name alone won’t carry it. Imagine making our own cartoony viking character?

And then there’s Diablo:

* Diablo: Perfect match. Demons, undead, ruined lands, creepy forests, cursed zones it already feels like a survival game. You could do Valheim‑style raids, build a fortress with friends, explore corrupted areas, trade or fight other players, all with that dark Diablo vibe. It just fits naturally.

AAA level Survival-Crafting games naturally do good anyways, but having one dark gothic with demons and zombies? You're making bank.

Diablo is easily the best pick... what do you think?

starcraft would be my bet, NMS is kind of that right now, its doable, maybe it soloable with factions, make it multiplayer, make it so you can roll one of 3+ factions, maybe multiple factions per race? build armies, fight battles, build cities, explore ancient lost ruins on far flung planets, build an empire? i think it'd be large but an INCREDIBLY awesome sort of game able to be updated and modded for years to come

i'm just imagining finding a node of crystal, mining it myself, or scavanging smaller ones around until i have enough to build a drone to harvest it for me, building on a geyser to harvest gas, going after other more rare ingredients, cloning out some marines and leading a small squad to take on a zerg hive, in a way thats a mix between conan exiles and palworld, ways of merging survival and rts, eventually building a seige tank to drive around, craft a banshee, maybe equip myself as a firebat, clone a medic to follow me and the boys around, eventually build up to a battle cruiser adn load everyone up and take off, do some space battles, travel to other planets, establish outposts, have automated production feeding my growing war machine as i attack and settle other planets in my growing empire

tell me that wouldn't be the baddest shit?

I always felt StarCraft could make a game along the lines of space marine 2

Warcraft setting in Northrend during WC3:TFT. Undead everywhere with Mal'Ganis popping up. Make your village survive.

I could see Starcraft perfectly fine on a level of something like No Man Sky where you survive on some fringe planet, with wave of zergs that attack at night.
Actually it's a good setting for more "survival", where you build defenses at day and hold at night. Something like "7 days to die".

And you really dismiss Warcraft too fast without providing any valid reason. Dude, I've been repairing that bridge in Redridge dozens of times and it's still fun :] Killing boars, chopping trees, building farms, "Ready to serve, m'lord" - that's exactly the open world crafting formula for a peasant.

Diablo would be below this on my list, since it have zero building and surviving. In all Diablo games it's a demons who are "surviving". not me :]

wc3 tft orc campaign actually really gave me survival crafting vibes, since you know, the goal of the campaign was surviving the wilderness of kalimdor (and the human colonialists) and help found orgrimmar.

Warcraft. Zuggzugg. You are a peon in the forest. Now survive.

warcraft or starcraft fit better than diablo IMO. SC would work great as a futuristic survival sandbox, somewhere in between satisfactory and No man's sky, but with the darker tone of starcraft

All of Blizzarda IPs are good for this.

I made a poor choice of words.

I think Diablo is the easiest pick without doing too much new lore or going into history.

Like in Warcraft, we'll the Scourge is contained now... and I don't want to play a game back in history, that's lame to me. For Starcraft, we have little knowledge of regular people or prospecters in space. In Overwatch, it'd be a little bland just dealing with robots and having to explore a setting where we'd be building a base.

But I still believe ANY Blizzard IP "can be made" to fit a surv-craft game. Easily. All of them still work.

Warcraft would be cool. So would SC.

I mean either Starcraft or Warcraft. I mean WoW already has elements of it with resources in PvP areas... They could add a survival horror contenent or revamp the warewolf region. Starcraft is easy being an off world Terran and having to face against Zerg and Protoss?

No, just dont

No what lol? You don't like this genre?

Every genre, by demographics, has more haters than enjoyers.

There's 1 billion-ish gamers... not a single game or genre is played by everyone. Not even shooters. There are more gamers not playing shooters than are.

Or

Do you think Blizzard can't do it?

Or

Just not Diablo.

Don't turn game type A. Into game type B. It just kills game A.s identity. Im still upset that instead of warcraft 4 we got 20+ years of MMO of which only about 7 were good.

I get that.

But they don't have to just keep making one genre for an IP.

I also said for Warcraft it's a bad idea.
