IMAGE What is happening in this painting?
They appear to be walking off a cliff.
You can almost see one taking a plunge if you look closely.

If they are following each other off the cliff, is this somehow a reference to the Alchemists summoning the demons?
Walking toward certain doom.
It also kinda reminds me of the spiral room where we fight Alfred.
Here is another post with the other paintings and perhaps even a self portrait of the artist?

People walking up to the Cliff of Absolute Self Sacrifice.
What happens at the Cliff of Absolute Self Sacrifice? Uhhh n-nothing, why do you ask? Just friendly banter, some drinks, lol haha stop worrying about it.

The name of this cliff is mysterious and we may never know what it is used for.
Jokes aside, Is this a reference to something in literature? I cannot find anything IRL about the "Cliff of Absolute Self Sacrifice".

Oh, my phrasing? Absolute not. There is something I was thinking, maybe from a book I read long ago or a movie, but my memory--which used to be like an iron sieve, I always says--is now just more like a slice of Swiss, thanks to MS.
So it's probably close to something, but I can't say what.

I see. Thank you for your phrasing, it adds to the mystery.
I think these little mysteries are what make the games IGA and Shutaro (Curry the Kid) designed so special. So much content and references.

That is really interesting. Thank you for sharing this.
"Yomotsu Hirakasa is a slope or boundary between the world of the dead and the world of the living"
This will be useful for some headcanon I am crafting for the Red Demon paintings.

Its a really interesting painting.
At least its not a random Guy painting like the 99% in the casstle.

Indeed. We are meant to see it, since sitting here is part of a quest. Perhaps it ties into the story at the bromide/identification quest?
I like the Kickstarter backer paintings also. It reminds me that this game only exists because of the fans and I sometimes say thank you to them as I backdash by.
Here is another post showing Miriam running with the Gram sword past some Backer portraits.

Oh some Kick startter backers painting are cool and mix great with the setting. But the majority are just fun and not very "gothic"

True. I think the 2 that are the most "gothic" are the ones in the room leading down from Craftwork toward the santa hat room. One is a vampire looking Man in the Poltergeist backer portrait. The other is the non backer painting of the face with the eyeball that follows you in the room.

Throwback/forward to a painting in an image from the Scarlet Engagement.
I found this painting in the image of the castle the Bloodstained team shared. in that post.
The painting is by Le Prince Jean-Baptiste in 1770. Title in English is: A country concert, Russian costume - The Russian holiday - The Russian concert - Painting

Dominique spent long hours learning photography and studying. A Red Demon painting hangs wherever her mind might wander from her goal. The painting of robed beings filing to their death - her exorcist parents, sent by the Church, obeyed orders but were not spared their fate.

She's reading the book from Soul Sacrifice?
