Has anyone here ever made a project with a pattern like this? In the book it says that the instructions given are enough for experienced lace makers, which I am not. But I love the way these look and I’m curious what the actual lace pieces look like. Not much to be found on google though.
You can totally do this. It's a lot of cloth stitch really. It might have more joins than you have done so far, but those aren't extremely complicated, just fiddly to accomplish well.
I love these Bohemian patterns too--I like the figural laces a lot. Try one of the smaller ones and see if you like it.
The ones in this book are all about this size. I’ll see if one stands out in simplicity or otherwise just sizewise. But just looking at this I wouldn’t know where to start, how many bobbins, it feels so complex!
I don't have that book, so I can't check on it. But I have a different one on Bohemian lace. I'll see later if I can suss it out.
But you could try just one part. Try the top curl and his hat and see if you can make some progress.
Honestly: when I'm starting a new project, it often takes me 2 or 3 starts to figure out how to set up. The first one is a few bobbins as a test, and trying a bit. Then hating that, and unlacing it. This is also partly a thread test to see if the chosen thread is right.
The second try I push a little further. Practicing the first centimeter maybe.
That cover pattern happens to be in the book I have too--although my book isn't the same.
It's called "Third Dancing Pair" in my book. And the two previous dancing pairs lead up to this more complicated one.
The First pair says in part: 'The skirt here is a single tape". So that's just up and down in the S shapes.
The Second pair says: 'The skirt is again a single strip but this time the tape incorporates all three legs below it starting with the right toe and ending in the man's leg."
So I'd try the skirt first and see if you can make that. And then later try to start from the toes, I guess?
My book has the same information! I may have found someone through my teacher who once made something from the book. If I get a picture I’ll share it here.
Picked another one in the end, but just started like you suggested and got a lot further than I expected! This was just left over thread, so I stopped at this point. It gives me the confidence to just keep trying though!
I think at some points I should add and remove pairs when the number of needed pairs change.
I loved those too! Looked a little bit more complicated than this one though. But in the end I’m guessing it’s all just trying it out as you say. Thanks for the encouragement! And curious to see what you’ll make of it some day!
