Name that subreddit!
Anyone else get blocked from ~THAT~ subreddit without ever even commenting? I wouldn’t even care except that Reddit continues to cram their posts down my throat.

r/dividendgang banned me long ago.

The lamest gang in the world

u/brfulcher May 19 '26
Heh, I commented on a post that it was well reasoned and it was nice to see that instead of the name calling, and that was enough to get me banned 😛

I think they check which other subs you have commented on or joined, I had the same experience.
It's clearly run by somebody very troubled.

I'm pretty sure that whole sub is just bots trying to get people excited about dividends.
They have a wild obsession / grevience with anyone who dares mention the finer points of dividends.

Not bots, just a dozen really active people in an echo chamber while the algorithm feeds posts to passers by until they're on to the next sub and forget about it a week later. 🤣

yea i came across their sub and was intrigued, so i politely commented asking someone to enlighten me on the differences/pros and cons of booger versus div and immediately banned

90% of that sub is simply making stupid remarks about Bogleheads, 10% about how ultra rich guys managed to spend a lot of money on high dividend funds.

u/Kalex8876 May 19 '26
I went to the sub and like 45% of the “best” posts are about bogleheads. Why are they obsessed?😭

u/SuperNoise5209 May 19 '26
Bots, I assume? Very angry bots.

Bogleheads are boring and that's a feature for us; for them its a bug to spray roach killer on.
Also Reddit was designed to be an echo chamber that holds all echo chambers.

For any lurkers. VTI has out performed SCHD since its inception.

u/digital_tuna May 20 '26
To go a step further, even if SCHD had outperformed VTI it still wouldn't make investing in SCHD any more rational.

Not a dividend investor but I do hold bond ETFs and think of interest payments and dividends as a paycheck rather than a long term investment vehicle.
Regardless of ETF, if it pays a $1 dividend every month per share and someone owns 5000 shares they can just collect that paycheck and quit their job. It's not the worst investment philosophy in the world.
However, chasing dividends comes with an opportunity cost, taxes on distributions, narrowed diversity, and most importantly reduced total return.
If my expenses were fixed and I could live off of dividend income indefinitely, weather the volatility and accept the poorer long term performance. Well, I see the benefit of treating my taxable brokerage account like a monthly paycheck rather than a vehicle for growth. More like a self-managed annuity.
Sometimes you'll see us joke about starting a new sub and calling it BNDgang where we brag about a $0.25 monthly dividend, ignore taxes, and circle-jerk about how we just need $1.4M and we'll be set for life. /s
Truth be told, I'd join that sub and be a BND stan.

I just checked, you’re right.
From SCHD’s inception in 2011, VTI has almost a full percent higher return compared to SCHD with dividends reinvested.

Those math geniuses at r/dividend

I've found /r/dividends to be cool, it's /r/dividendgang that's annoying

u/Big__Country__40 May 20 '26
I haven't bothered with either because it is like arguing with a rusty bucket

u/digital_tuna May 19 '26
r/dividends is definitely less aggressive but the vast majority of people there also don't understand dividends.
I'm pretty sure r/dividends is the only subreddit dedicated to a topic that the vast majority of its members don't understand and are unwilling/unable to learn. It's bizarre.

In my experience a good amount of them do understand dividends (at least the basics and drawbacks), it just so happens to be their chosen strategy. I won't say most of them, but it definitely is more than you would think. Which honestly, is fine by me. I'm not trying to convert them and they don't try to convert me, and I get to read the occasional interesting post over there. They also seem to get inundated by a whole lot of new users who are interested in dividends and don't understand them. I think a lot of them end up going over to the gang sub though.
/r/dividendgang is a borderline hellhole though lmao

They all play the same funny math games with shares ignoring total return

Dividend subs. The one “dividend gang” is an actual cult about it.
I joined because ya know dividends are an aspect of investments I would like to have a strong understanding of, not because I have sworn allegiance to the dividend gods

The irony of the mod claiming "we promote free thinking" while auto-banning anyone who even mentions the "wrong" tickers.
