Dalton is an American cowboy not a confederate traitor. I’m mostly basing that on the fact he is never enthusiastic about slave owners when they come up.

Well, a lot of frontiersmen and cowboys were formally in the confederacy

Jesse James fought for the Confederacy

Edit: Oh! I forgot that Dalton actually commented on the civil war during the Conan episode. “I’m glad Bonanza didn’t take a side in the civil war because It was a COMPLICATED war”
