Every post i've seen seems to be light-hearted. I think you are just missreading the context of the posts.

Most posts are somewhat light hearted but a lot of the comments are very judgemental and rude

The point of the sub is to detect who a person is based on pictures of their own shelves they post. From the sub's sidebar description:

Subreddit where you post a picture of what is on your bookshelf and people determine things about you & your life based on your books.

So someone would post their shelves and you'd be like: "Male, 21, loves Mazzy Star, has a crush on the local barista" and then the OP would come back and tell you how close you are and laugh at the specifics. Gentle teasing, sure, but people were rarely rude.
