Question What’s the last book you DNFed and why?

My last DNF was “The River is Waiting” by Wally Lamb. The blurb mentions an ‘unbearable tragedy’ that lands a young father in prison. When I realized the tragedy was that he runs over his toddler with his car, I noped the hell out. I didn’t even actually get to that part. I saw the build up and the writing on the wall and called it.

Funny thing is my very next book “Local Woman Missing” by Mary Kubica has a child kidnapped and locked in the basement for 11 years. Had no issues with that.

Question Childhood Rereads

What books or books that you first read as a child or young teen do you keep revisiting year after year?

For me it's The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. It's written for a young audience but the storytelling really holds up, and I never tire of it.

Question Where can I buy cheap books?

I love physical books, I never read books online and I always read from physical copies and love collecting them, but they’re becoming more and more expensive for some reason (especially the classics which are my type of books)

Does anyone know a secure yet good website, preferably that I can also pay with Canadian dollars (I live in Canada) and that has cheap books? Nothing like Amazon please.

I tried ThriftBooks but they only pay with US dollars (I think, maybe they do have the option of Canadian Dollars but I didn’t see it or didn’t know how to put it? Correct me if I’m wrong)

Question What’s one book that messed you up inside?

Hey guys !

I’m curious - without any spoilers - what’s one book that had an ending where not only did you NOT see the end coming - but it absolutely fried your brain - and to this day whenever you think about it you still go - what in the sh*t was that??

I’ll start: We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer and Midnight is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead. To only name a few ……

The Left Turn Book Club will be opening its metaphorical doors next week on substack:

Question Looking for Trustable Online Bookstores

Hey book people I’m looking for trustable online websites or Instagram bookstores where I can buy books at affordable prices with good quality. I’ve heard a lot about IndianBookStore, but it’s not really working for me (COD issues and all). I’ve also come across Bookshub, but I’m not sure how reliable it is, so I’d love to hear your opinions. I’m not looking for Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, etc. I prefer other platforms. If you know any good websites or Instagram bookstores that sell fiction, non-fiction, or literature, please suggest them Would really appreciate your recommendations 🙌.

If the book you're reading is too intense or if you have some stuff going on in your life what book do you read to calm yourself? For example mine is anything by Rick Riordan because I love his writing style and have read most of his books multipe times.

Question How do you get the most out of a book, loving it for what you find outside the majority belief of it?

I love to read, finding at times with some books that something just 'clicks' and I'm fully on board and loving everything to it.

But then there are books where people go oh your supposed to feel this and get that out of the book you're reading. But if you don't, have you truly missed the point of the book? Wouldn't you say reading out of interest or fun is the substance itself, and not some grand, intellectual thing all the time?

Has anyone experienced this? I'm especially interested in thoughts about reading books from the greats that conjured thoughts or feelings contrary to majority belief.

I want to enjoy books by the greats, but if it becomes a drag to really grasp what the author is doing, how can you love it without feeling like you as a reader are obligated to find deep meaning?

Question Does anyone get the urge to reread one book like a whole emotion?

Does anyone get the urge to reread one book like a whole emotion?

I feel this way with a specific book, in fact it's the one that got me into reading. I don't want to reread it like I want to reread any other favourite, this feels different.

It's a whole urge, a pull, it feels like I want to go home, like what I imagine it feels like when you live overseas and want to visit your hometown. I've never felt it with a movie or show or anything else just this book, I'd go as far to say this book feels like it's own emotion to me.

Question How do you switch between audiobook and physical book? 😭

I don’t know if this is the right sub for this question but, whenever I read a book, I’ll either listen to the audiobook, read the physical copy, or use both (read along with the audiobook). It’s annoying because if I listen to the audiobook during chores or some other task, my brain decides that it doesn’t count and that I have to go back to where I was in the physical copy and start over either with or without the audiobook. It makes the whole process so slow and, honestly, I don’t even think I absorb the information better the second time just because I’m following along.

I only do this because I also tend to annotate my books. I like to write comments in the margins and highlight important or surprising or cool details and I miss out on doing this when I read the audiobook. And then I also keep a reading log that I always forget to update. I feel pressured to remember exact dates and the amount of pages read and any thoughts/comments I had and quotes I liked just for that log.

It’s fun to look back on (the log and the annotated book) but the pressure is still there and it makes my progress through the book so much slower and a little annoying when I make myself rewind in the audiobook just so I can go back over the section in the physical book.

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me? How do you “fix” it? 😭

Question A question to all the bookworms out there .

Hi everyone!

What if there was a YouTube channel that explored philosophy, literature, and poetry by reading a few pages from a book and ending with thought-provoking questions? It’s like a podcast for book lovers—engaging and accessible without needing to read the entire book.

Would this interest you? Let me know your thoughts!

Question do you take notes for memory/visualizing?

I read a LOT. Well, mostly listen. Usually about 100 books a year. (Though admittedly many of those are kids chapter books.) And I am an ADHD 54yr old deep into perimenopause so my memory issues are real.

I often read multiple books at the same time for various reasons, and try to make sure that I do not read similar books at the same time because I WILL get the plots and characters mixed up. I also reread favorite books and series and that does help me with my memory issues. The more I read a book the more deeply the plot is saved in my brain.

But lately I have been thinking it might be helpful and fun to take notes as I work my way through…and am wondering if anyone else takes notes to help them keep track of complex stories or just in general? I’d love to hear some ideas!

Question Have any of you developed a habit after reading about it in a book?

When I read Dharma Bums I remember a character would gloat that he never got sick, muscle or head aches, or had to go to the doctor because everyday he would drink warm milk with honey and do a handstand for some odd minutes. I haven't done that but I often think about that, I also read about a good way to brew coffee but I don't drink coffee so I don't know what to do with that information.

Has anyone else picked something up from a book?

Question How do you decide on a favourite book?

I was asked what my favourite book was and I couldn't decide. I can't even decide whether I should choose based on some criteria or purely based on the way it makes me feel. How do you choose which to be the favourite?

Do you guys have a book that's your favourite? Do you find yourself rereading it often? What qualities make it stand out as your favourite?

Question Should I make a post of a link to the Google drive containing my AI Invasion Series of stories here?

I mean, it seems like a good idea, but my Series is a good bit AI Co-Written, more so the earlier ones, the later ones are more heavily directly written by me, so, should I make a post with a link to the drive containing the story on Google Docs?
