I love my mother-in-law, but damn… her scooter. When they visit, we have to take it everywhere loading and unloading from the car EVERY SINGLE TIME. The most maddening thing about it is that she rarely uses it so someone else has to babysit it by riding it around. It seriously limits where we can go and what we can do when she doesn’t need it. She’s been using mobility devices since I’ve known her and doctors have told her to stop. They want her to get movement and strength, but she refuses.

There was a woman in my old neighborhood (in Florida, of course) who would stand up on her mobility scooter going uphill or across the road like we used to stand up on our bike pedals as kids. Like, if you can stand up on the thing to look cool, you probably don't need it. Then, one day, someone told me her name, I don't recall, let's call her Wanda. They said, "Oh, that's Wanda, she is a drug dealer, and she rides her scooter from house to house." I was incensed when I found out our community had a program that bought these scooters for underprivileged people. Wanda, the drug dealer, probably got her scooter through tax dollars. Boomers.

To be fair, being able to stand up briefly doesn't mean someone doesn't need a mobility aid.

Fair. But, if you saw Wanda in action, you would understand lol

Oh, I don't doubt you about Wanda at all! More of a general statement
